TOP 14 best Nikon cameras: 2021 rating and how to choose a high-quality DSLR model

Why Nikon?

Over the past few years, I have owned various DSLR cameras, both Canon and Nikon (Canon 450D, Canon 500D, Canon 50D, Canon 7D, Nikon D60, Nikon D5000, Nikon D90, Nikon D7000, Nikon D700).

It is impossible to say unequivocally what is better and what is worse! Each brand is good in its own way and has both pros and cons. In this review article, I will not describe these points, since each of you must decide for himself what is closer to him.

If you asked me: “Why Nikon”? Then I would probably answer that

  1. Nikon was the first to provide top-end autofocus in a budget FF;
  2. Budget Nikon optics outperform Canon analogues;
  3. Shadows from NEF(RAW) are drawn much better when underexposed;
  4. Nikon NEF files allow for more image manipulation without loss of quality;
  5. Exposure metering is tied to the focal point (in the spot metering mode, budget Canon cameras are not tied to the selected AF point; metering is performed only at the central one)
  6. In general, Nikon's exposure metering module is more advanced; it is RGB, unlike the Canon 7D/5D3. Only 1D X has a similar or slightly better RGB exposure metering, even purely in terms of formal characteristics - 100,000 pixels.
  7. The auto-ISO algorithm is implemented more competently;
  8. Camera JPEG is generally better too;
  9. Work with external flashes has been implemented more correctly.

Historically, in Russia, it turned out that professionals shot with Canon, because, firstly, the optics of this manufacturer were 20 percent cheaper, and secondly, the company organized service centers in our country. When Nikon more or less equalized prices and opened its service centers, the situation evened out. Again, in 2007-2009, Nikon released a large number of new telephoto lenses, which surpassed Canon’s counterparts in quality, and updated the line of 24-70 and 70-200 zoom lenses against the already quite old players in the market from Canon. Not to mention 14-24, which has no analogues at all. But recently Canon has also updated its line and the situation has approximately leveled off.

This competition and struggle for the title of leader will always exist, so it is at least incorrect to say unequivocally that one manufacturer is better than another.

Factors influencing the choice of camera

As Evgeny Kartashov already wrote, before making a choice, you need to decide why you need this SLR camera?

I will not duplicate what Evgeniy wrote, I will simply outline the main points. If you are going to actively engage in photography and develop in this direction, I recommend that you buy a normal monitor, at least with an E-IPS matrix, and calibrate it. Color/shadows in photography are very important, and if you don’t see them on your TN matrix, then such photos will be of no use, you will argue with people that everything is fine with your complexion in the photo, but in reality it may turn out to be not this way.

It is also worth understanding that cheap and cheerful photography will not work. Good optics that produce a good image and hit the target at open apertures cost money, quite a lot of it. The cost of a good portrait lens can reach 50-70 thousand rubles. Of course, you can get by with just good lenses, but that’s also money and 5-10 thousand rubles won’t get by here either. As a rule, a normal portrait lens costs from 10 thousand, a good, more or less bright zoom costs from 30 thousand and above.

How to choose and which Nikon camera to buy

Nikon is a multinational corporation that originated in Japan and specializes in the field of optics and imaging. It is the second largest manufacturer and remains one of the most popular brands in the market for producing the best cameras.

In this review, we are going to look at different camera models: Compact, DSLR and Mirrorless to help you choose the best Nikon camera according to your needs. We will be discussing why you should buy a Nikon camera in the first place for your photography needs.

Camera Nikon D3100

This is Nikon's most budget entry-level DSLR, suitable for amateur photography, easy to use and understand. Equipped with a D-video function that allows you to shoot video in high quality (HD). The 14.2 megapixel matrix makes it possible to work with high-definition images and then print them in high resolution. Very light in weight.

For prof. not suitable for use.

Main technical characteristics:

  • Sensor size in MP 14.2 (4608 x 3072);
  • Physical sensor size: 23.1 x 15.4 mm (crop factor 1.5);
  • 11-point autofocus with 3D tracking;
  • Burst speed: 3 frames/sec;
  • Full HD video shooting (up to 1920×1080 at 24 frames/sec) with manual control over exposure parameters;
  • ISO sensitivity: 100-3200 (expandable to ISO 12800);
  • Shutter speed 30 - 1/4000 s;
  • Viewfinder coverage – 95% of the frame;
  • Memory cards: SD, SDHC, SDXC;
  • Dimensions: 124x96x75 mm;
  • Weight 505g.

I would like to note that the characteristics specified by the manufacturer regarding photosensitivity, in practice, do not quite agree with the numbers. Although it is possible to expand ISO to 12800-25600, it is better not to abuse high ISOs. Working ISO in this type of technology is everything that is not higher than ISO 800-1000. Anything higher will greatly spoil both the color and the picture as a whole. This will be especially noticeable in low light conditions. “Pixel mess”, loss of color, grain, etc. will appear. Therefore, when choosing amateur equipment, do not really trust what is written about ISO 6400, 12800, 25600, etc.

For reference: the same Nikon D700, or Canon 5D2\ 5D3, although it can be used at high ISOs 3200-6400, it is still better not to go above 2000 if we are talking about quality, let alone in the amateur segment for $500.

This can also be seen from the results of testing the camera, which you can see here.

The quality of the pictures is completely satisfactory.

An excellent camera with an excellent dynamic range and working ISO up to 12800. Excellent autofocus, almost instantaneous, focuses perfectly even in the dark. Color rendering is perfect!   • brightness and saturation of pictures (with the correct exposure, you will achieve the brightness that you need);
  • resolution (8256×5504);
  • rotating screen.

Minuses

  • weight (915 g).

Camera bomb! I have been using Nikon D750 cameras for four years. But the D850 beats the D750 in every way. My camera is two weeks old. Here are the benefits. Tracking autofocus is much better. The picture under the same conditions with the same lenses is less noisy and sharper. A very good folding touch screen with the ability to autofocus when shooting photos or videos based on the point you poke on the screen. Focus peaking (illumination of the sharpness zone) has appeared in both photo and video modes.

Camera Nikon D3200

One of Nikon's entry-level budget DSLRs with many megapixels. New. Replaced Nikon D3100. Compared to the D3100, the display was improved, a new processor was installed, changes were also made to the controls, and the Auto ISO algorithm was improved with the ability to set minimum shutter speed thresholds. In general, everything is, of course, good, but it’s not clear why amateurs need so many megapixels.

Main technical characteristics:

  • Sensor size in MP 24.2 (6016 x 4000);
  • Physical sensor size: 23.2 x 15.4 mm (crop factor 1.5);
  • 11-point autofocus with 3D tracking;
  • Burst speed: 4 frames/sec;
  • Full HD video shooting (up to 1920×1080 at 24 frames/sec) with manual control over exposure parameters;

What types of cameras are there?

Digital cameras can be divided into 5 types:

  • Ultra-compact. There are many people who want to capture as many moments as possible during the day, but few of them want to carry a standard-sized camera with them, which takes up a lot of space and at the same time has considerable weight. It is for such people that ultra-compact cameras are suitable, which, despite their compact size, have a fairly large LCD screen. The screen size can reach up to 2.5 inches. The ultra-compact device has a beautiful and bright appearance. If we talk about the disadvantages of an ultra-compact device, there are many of them, but at the same time the user will be able to get very good photos. Among the minuses, we highlight the following: lack of variety of manual settings, small matrix size, close placement of buttons, small battery capacity.
  • Compact. Compact cameras, also known as “Soap cameras,” are an excellent option for reproducing amateur photography. The larger size, in contrast to ultra-compact cameras, only benefits. Since the large dimensions make it easy to place the device buttons at an acceptable distance from each other, in order to prevent accidental pressing and simply inconvenient use. The compact device also has a number of other advantages: various manual settings, improved optics, the ability to use a tripod for image stabilization. There are also models with a rotating screen, a macro mode, and good battery capacity. Compact cameras show good results in good lighting conditions, but at night or in poor lighting conditions in the evening, the user will need to try to get average image quality.
  • Ultrasounds. Ultrasounds have a very impressive appearance. From a distance it may seem that you are holding a professional, expensive camera in your hands. A large lens gives this effect, and there are also large bodies. Basically, ultrazooms have similar parameters to compact cameras. Their main difference is a wide zoom range and more functional optics. This type of device is an excellent, inexpensive alternative to SLR cameras. Expensive cameras have a minimum focal length of 50x, budget options have a minimum focal length of 20x. Ultras are far from SLR cameras; they cannot boast a large sensor size and create photographs of the highest quality. But for representatives of their price segment, the devices cope perfectly with their task, showing very good image quality.
  • Semi-professional mirrorless. Semi-professional cameras are designed for beginner photographers as well as experienced amateurs. Mirrorless cameras have high matrix characteristics, the ability to change lenses, support for saving photos in RAW format and large flash cards, good battery capacity, and advanced manual settings. When used properly, images taken with a mirrorless camera are extremely difficult to distinguish from professional photos.
  • Mirrored. Cameras for professionals are capable of capturing images of the highest quality. The devices have high resolution, a large memory buffer, an optical viewfinder, a large fleet of optics, interchangeable lenses, fast focusing, high-speed shooting, excellent ergonomics and a huge list of possible manual settings.

Camera Nikon D5100

An amateur SLR camera, one step higher in class than the 3xxx series line. Also not suitable for professional work.

Main technical characteristics:

  • Sensor size in MP 16.2 (4928 x 3264);
  • Physical sensor size: 23.6 x 15.6 mm (crop factor 1.5)
  • 11-point autofocus with 3D tracking;
  • Burst speed: 4 frames/sec;
  • Full HD video recording (up to 1920×1080);
  • Rotating display;
  • ISO sensitivity: 100-6400 (expandable to ISO 25600);
  • Shutter speed 30 - 1/4000 s;
  • Viewfinder coverage – 95% of the frame
  • Memory cards: SD, SDHC, SDXC;
  • Battery capacity: ~660 frames;
  • Dimensions: 128x97x79 mm;
  • Weight 560g.

Unlike other models, this camera is equipped with a tilt-and-tilt monitor with a variable angle, which simplifies the shooting process. The camera has an extended dynamic range, which allows you to create interesting pictures. The downside is that the camera does not have a separate button for adjusting ISO.

You can watch the camera test here.

Camera Nikon D5200

This camera, which replaced the D5100, had a greatly improved AF system. Now it is based on the Multi-Cam 4800DX AF sensor, which is well known to fans of the system from the Nikon D7000. The sensor combines 39 autofocus points, 9 of which are cross-type. The exposure metering system has also been updated. To assess illumination, the Nikon D5200 uses a 2016-point sensor capable of distinguishing colors. This is done to more accurately determine the scene being photographed when automatically setting the exposure.

Camera Nikon D300S

Big brother Nikon D90 with a number of improvements. Positioned as a professional camera. I would like to note that if you shoot the same thing under normal conditions, you will not see any difference between the D90 and D300S. It comes down to ergonomics, convenience, AF speed and tenacity, and better protection from dust and humidity.

Main technical characteristics:

  • Sensor size in MP 12.3 (4288 x 2848);
  • Physical matrix size: 23.6 x 15.8 mm (crop factor 1.5);
  • 51-point autofocus with 3D tracking;
  • Video recording 1280×720;
  • Burst speed: 7-8 fps;
  • ISO sensitivity: 200-3200 (expandable to ISO 6400);
  • Shutter speed 30 - 1/8000 s;
  • Viewfinder coverage – 100% frame;
  • Memory cards: CompactFlash, SD, SDHC;
  • Battery capacity: ~ 850 photos;
  • Dimensions: 147x114x74 mm;
  • Weight 938 g.

Camera Nikon D7000

I placed this camera after the D300S, because I think that it is still more professional than amateur. Among the advantages, I would like to highlight fast AF (for AF-c mode), there are 5 delay speeds, many AF points, sane video, many settings and functions, in some ways superior to even the D700 in terms of convenience, 2 memory cards, less noise at high ISOs, than the D90. There is fine adjustment of AF and horizon. Good detail with good lenses. Slightly more comfortable grip than the D90. Excellent detail and contrast, ideal for landscapes and nature photography. The downsides are the color when shooting people with pale skin in bright light / in the sun, the midtones become discolored and a carrot tint appears, incorrect matrix metering, the sky often gets knocked out, “gray” camera jpeg. In Nikon programs, the ravs often slow down, and it’s more difficult to bring color to mind than with the same D90. Otherwise, the camera is excellent, it performs very well with the 16-85 when shooting landscapes, and is also very good for birds and macro.

Main technical characteristics:

  • Sensor size in MP 16.2 (4928 × 3264);
  • Physical matrix size: 23.6 x 15.6 mm (crop factor 1.5);
  • 39-point autofocus with 3D tracking (Multi-CAM 4800DX with TTL phase detection, fine tuning);
  • Video recording up to 1920 × 1080;
  • Burst speed: 6 fps;
  • ISO sensitivity: 100-6400 (expandable to ISO 25600);
  • Shutter speed 30 - 1/8000 s.;
  • Viewfinder coverage – 100% frame;
  • Memory cards: SD, SDHC, SDXC;
  • Battery capacity: ~ 1050 photos;
  • Dimensions: 147x114x74 mm;
  • Weight 780 g.

Camera Nikon D600

This is a budget version of a full-frame DSLR, aimed at updating mid-class models. It sits comfortably somewhere between the full-frame D800 and the D7000 format. At the same time, it combines many features from both models. Along with the new 24-megapixel full-frame FX-format sensor, you get 100% viewfinder coverage and the D800's signature 3.2-inch screen. In addition to quite a few features, the D600 has a similar build, including a dual SD card slot like the D7000.

I took the information from here.

Main technical characteristics:

  • Sensor size in MP 24.3 (6016 x 4016);
  • Physical matrix size: 36 x 24 mm;
  • 39-point AF system with Multi-CAM4800 autofocus sensor module;
  • Video recording 1920×1080 up to 30fps;
  • Burst speed: 5.5 fps;
  • ISO sensitivity: 100-6400 (expandable to ISO 50-25600);
  • Shutter speed 30 - 1/4000 s.;
  • Viewfinder coverage – 100% frame
  • Battery capacity 900 photos;
  • Memory cards: SD, SDHC, SDXC;
  • Dimensions: 141x113x82;
  • Weight 850 g.

Camera Nikon D700

An old professional camera from Nikon.

Very accurate, and most importantly tenacious autofocus and a fast screwdriver, minimum misses.

  • Operating ISOs are higher than any cropped camera.
  • The shadows are drawn very well.
  • Convenient controls, almost all the necessary buttons are at hand, there is a built-in flash.
  • Ergonomics, constructive, pleasant to pick up and work with.
  • NEF files are lightweight, it’s nice to work in editors, nothing slows you down.
  • Auto white balance works well, editing pictures is easy and quick (compared to the D7000 on the new matrix)
  • There are no particular problems with color and skin tone, even when shooting in direct sunlight.
  • It has dust and moisture protection, so it’s not scary to shoot in the rain and snow (of course, within reason, with glasses equipped with rubber bands on the bayonet and also having moisture protection).

Flaws:

  • A bit heavy (at first), and too heavy for going on vacation with a full set of glasses.
  • Unusable life view.
  • It would not hurt to have 14-16Mp (sometimes there is not enough detail). If it were 16Mp like the D4, it would be ideal.
  • I would like the main control wheel to have program modes U1, U2. (it’s inconvenient to switch between settings banks through the menu)
  • I would like to have a non-software ISO 100

Main technical characteristics:

  • Sensor size in MP 12.1 (4256 x 2832);
  • Physical matrix size: 36 x 24 mm;
  • 51-point autofocus with 3D tracking;
  • NO video recording;
  • Burst speed: 5-8 fps;
  • ISO sensitivity: 200-6400 (expandable to ISO 25600);
  • Shutter speed 30 - 1/8000 s.;
  • Viewfinder coverage – 95% of the frame;
  • Memory cards: CompactFlash;
  • Dimensions: 147x123x77;
  • Weight 995 g.

Camera Nikon D800\800E

The first characteristic that catches your eye is a full-frame sensor with an impressive resolution of 36 megapixels, which is twice as much as that of the flagship D4 model. Based on this parameter alone, the D800 can immediately be classified as a high-end camera. The ISO sensitivity range is 100-6400, expandable to 50-25600, and the D800 takes over from the D4 its 51-point auto-focus system, processor and advanced video mode.

I took the information from here.

Main technical characteristics:

  • Sensor size in MP 36.3 (7360 x 4912);
  • Physical matrix size: 36 x 24 mm;
  • two versions of the camera: with an AA filter (D800) and without an AA filter (D800E);
  • 2 EXPEED 3 processors;
  • 51 sensors, of which 15 are cross-type with 3D tracking;
  • Full HD video with multi-zone FX and DX mode Full HD (1080p) at 30p, 25p and 24p;
  • Burst speed: 4-5 fps (FX\DX modes);
  • ISO sensitivity: 100-6400 (expandable to ISO 50-25600);
  • Shutter speed 30 - 1/8000 s.;
  • Viewfinder coverage – 100% frame;
  • Memory cards: CompactFlash, SD, SDHC, SDXC;
  • Dimensions: 146x123x82;
  • Weight 1kg.

The best Nikon mirrorless cameras with interchangeable lenses

Mirrorless cameras are more compact, allow you to see the image immediately in digitized form and display additional information on the screen. If you need a camera of this type, then the choice is obvious - Nikon Z 6 Kit.

Nikon Z6 Kit

This is a stripped-down and cheaper version of the Z7, which is not very inferior to the advanced version, but costs about 130 thousand rubles. In terms of price and quality, this is the best Nikon camera in its niche. The model uses a full-frame matrix with a resolution of 25.28 megapixels, allowing you to take detailed photos in A2-A3 format.

Nikon Z 6 Kit technology has a wide range of ISO 50-3200, which guarantees versatility of use. There is also a Z mount for mounting advanced lenses and support for 4k video recording. Professionals also like the 5-axis matrix stabilization. The only more or less obvious disadvantage of this option is its short battery life; the battery runs out after about 300 shutter releases.

Advantages

  • High resolution images;
  • Autofocus with fast response;
  • Ergonomic body shape;
  • Sharp and accurate throughout the entire range of the kit lens;
  • Small dimensions – 134x101x68 mm, making photography convenient;

Flaws

  • Expensive XQD cards are used.

An innovation in the Nikon Z 6 Kit and Z 7 is the Z mount, which features a flange diameter increased to 55 mm and a flange length shortened to 16 mm. It is compatible with lenses from other manufacturers and allows installation of F-type devices via an FTZ adapter.

Nikon D3S camera

Old prof. reportage camera, older brother of the Nikon D700. The main differences from the D700 are ergonomics, speed, and higher operating ISOs.

Main technical characteristics:

  • Sensor size in MP 12.1 (4256 × 2832);
  • Physical matrix size: 36 x 24 mm;
  • 51-point autofocus Multi-CAM 3500FX (15 cross-shaped sensors);
  • Video recording 1280×720 24fps;
  • Burst speed: 9 fps;
  • ISO sensitivity: 200-12800 (expandable to ISO 25600);
  • Shutter speed 30 - 1/8000 s.;
  • Viewfinder coverage – 100% frame;
  • Memory cards: CompactFlash;
  • Dimensions: 160x157x88;
  • Weight 1240g.

Features of Nikon cameras

Important! When choosing between cameras from the Nicon brand and devices from other brands, it is worth comparing the advantages and features of the devices in question.

For example, gadgets for creating photos from Nicon differ:

  • a large number of shooting modes;
  • the presence of manual and automatic adjustment of modes;
  • maintaining photo quality in low light;
  • excellent autofocus performance;
  • presence of the ability to control the flash;
  • using a large sensor on the screen;
  • high speed of execution of various actions;
  • extremely clear and simple interface;
  • long operational and warranty period;
  • decent package.

Nikon D4 camera

A full-frame camera capable of shooting high-speed bursts in RAW lasting about a hundred frames, a built-in RJ-45 port with the ability to not only transfer data, but also control it, support for XQD memory cards. Will this be enough to beat its main competitor, the Canon EOS 1DX?

This camera boasts bursts at a speed of 11 frames per second and a duration of up to a hundred photos when shooting in RAW format. Another distinctive feature is the use of XQD memory cards, which are characterized by enormous writing and reading speeds. By the way, Nikon D4 became the first camera to support memory cards of this type, which is not surprising, because Nikon and SanDisk were at the origins of the creation of this format, and only at the final stage Sony acquired the rights to this development.

A detailed review can be read here.

Not long ago I shot with it when I took paired shots with the D700 VS 5D III and D4. The camera, of course, impressed me after the D700. This is a machine gun that feels very comfortable in the hand and focuses in artificial light faster than you might imagine. And when you start filming in series, you understand why they take money.

Main technical characteristics:

  • Sensor size in MP 16.2 (4928 x 3280);
  • Physical matrix size: 36 x 24 mm;
  • Carbon fiber and Kevlar composite shutter with a service life of 400,000 cycles;
  • 51-point autofocus Multi-CAM 3500FX;
  • Video recording Full HD (1080p) 50/60 fps at a resolution of 1280×720, 25/30 fps at a resolution of 1920×1080;
  • Burst speed: 11 fps;
  • ISO sensitivity: 100-12800 (expandable to ISO 50-204800);
  • Shutter speed 30 - 1/8000 s.;
  • Viewfinder coverage – 100% frame;
  • Memory cards: XQD and Type I CompactFlash memory cards (UDMA compatible);
  • Dimensions: 160x157x91;
  • Weight 1340g.
