Schemes and rules for connecting BKN

The connection diagram and installation features of an indirect heating boiler depend on the class of the device and the heating system in the house. It is necessary to choose the right installation location, focusing on the location of the boiler, pump insertion and existing wiring. Let's try to figure out what needs to be taken into account when installing heating equipment.

Option #1 – piping with a three-way valve

This is one of the most popular schemes, since when it is used, there is a parallel connection of the heating system and the BKN, equipped with shut-off valves. The boiler must be installed near the boiler, a circulation pump must be installed in the supply, then a three-way valve.

This scheme is successfully used if several heating devices are used, for example, two different boilers.

A three-way valve is a kind of switch that is controlled by a thermal relay. When the temperature drops, the automation is activated, and the coolant flow from the heating circuit is redirected to the BKN

Essentially, this is a priority system that ensures rapid heating of water in the boiler when the radiators are completely turned off for a while. As soon as the temperature rises to the set value, the three-way valve is activated again and returns the coolant to its previous direction - to the heating system. This piping method is useful for those who use the boiler constantly.

Option #2 – scheme with two circulation pumps

If the boiler is rarely used (for example, seasonally or on weekends) or there is a need for water whose temperature is lower than in the heating system, use a scheme with two circulation pumps. The first is installed on the supply pipe, directly in front of the BKN, the second - on the heating circuit.

The circulation pump is powered through a thermal relay, so it starts to operate only when the temperature drops below the required one. Heating accelerates when forced circulation is turned on

There is no three-way valve in this scheme; the piping is equipped using simple connecting tees.

Option #3 – piping with a hydraulic arrow

This connection is used for volumetric boilers (200 liters or more) and branched heating systems with many additional circuits. An example is the heating system in a two-story house, where, in addition to a multi-circuit radiator network, heated floors are used.

A hydraulic distributor (hydraulic arrow) is necessary to simplify the layout of the heating system and avoid installing recirculation pumps on each heating branch

The water gun equipment allows you to avoid thermal shock, since the water pressure in each circuit will be the same. It is quite difficult to make the piping according to this scheme yourself, so it is better to turn to professional installers.

Option #4 - using coolant recirculation

Recirculation is useful when there is a circuit that requires a constant supply of hot water - for example, a heated towel rail. If it is connected to the heating system, the coolant will constantly circulate, and the dryer will function and at the same time serve as a heating device.

The use of recirculation has one big advantage - you don’t need to wait for the water to heat up to the desired temperature, it will always be hot

But this scheme also has disadvantages. The main one is an increase in fuel costs, because constant heating of the water cooled in the circuit is required. The second disadvantage is mixing water in the boiler. Typically, hot water is located in the upper part, and from there it flows to the water supply points, where it is mixed with cold water, as a result of which the outlet temperature is slightly lower.

There are models of boilers with built-in recirculation, that is, with ready-made connections for connecting a heated towel rail. But it’s cheaper to buy a regular tank using tees for connection.

Option #5 – system with a non-volatile boiler

A distinctive feature of this scheme is the installation of the boiler at a higher level than the boiler and heating appliances. Preference is given to wall-mounted models that can be hung at a height of 1 m above the floor.

Floor-standing models specifically within this scheme are inferior to wall-mounted ones in heating speed and quality. The water temperature is much lower (about the same as in the return pipeline), therefore, the supply of hot water is less

The non-volatile type of heating is based on the application of the laws of gravity, therefore, the coolant will circulate even when the electricity is turned off. In normal mode, you can connect circulation pumps.

Basic faults

Correct installation and connection diagram of the structure

Purely indirect type boilers do not have electric heating elements, which most often fail. For the same reason, the possibility of scale formation on the walls of the water container is sharply reduced. Therefore, the main problem can only be leaks in the tank itself and the supply pipelines. Modern tank materials make such a malfunction unlikely. But if it does happen, then it can only be eliminated using welding, which requires contacting a service center.

You can independently tighten the connecting fittings and possibly replace the heating elements, if they are included in the boiler configuration.

Drazice OKC 200 NTRR

Quantities

We consume water in liters, and measure its temperature in degrees. Water, in order to heat up, uses thermal energy in Joules based on its mass in kilograms. A water heater produces power in Watts, and efficiency is calculated as a percentage. Let's translate these units of measurement into one, understandable plane.

  • According to the laws of physics, in order to increase the temperature of 1 kg of water, which is equal to 1 liter, by 1°C, 4.187 kJ of thermal energy is required, which is 0.001 kW/h of the power of the heating device. Type, manufacturer and losses are not taken into account. No matter who makes the heater and no matter what conditions this mechanism is in, the water always needs exactly that much energy.
  • The water entering the boiler in winter (the boiler does not work in summer) has a temperature of about 10°. Insulated supply pipes will reduce the temperature difference at the inlet and outlet of the boiler and help save fuel.
  • The number 60° is set on the control panel of the device. This means that the liquid in the unit will be heated to this temperature. Therefore, 60-10=50o. It is not worth setting a large heating value. Such a load will entail increased wear and tear on the equipment.
  • The temperature needs to be raised by this amount. Let's multiply the found difference in degrees by the energy needed to produce each of them - 50 * 0.001 = 0.05 kW/h of power the boiler will need for such work.

So, to heat 1 liter of water to 60 o
you will need 0.05 kW/h of boiler power, and to increase it by 1 o - 0.001 kW/h of its effort.
The hot water that we take from the tap to wash our face or wash dishes has a temperature of about 40°. It will be hot above, cool below. In order for the calculation of the operation of a boiler, not only indirect heating, but also any other type of heater, to be correct, it is necessary to take into account that we are mixing two waters, each of which has its own temperature.

  • Hot water is thermal energy. We calculated that 1o = 0.001 kW/h .
  • The water we want should be 40°, which means 40 * 0.001 = 0.04 kW.
  • Cold water has 10°, which means there is already 0.01 kW/h. This is 25% of the required heat volume.
  • This means you need to add another 75% of the temperature, which will be 0.05*75%=0.0375 kW/h.

Thus, 1 liter of the desired mixture (hereinafter we will call it warm water) will contain 0.75 liters of fully heated water from our unit and 0.0375 kW/h of its power.

Protherm FS B300S

Connection on the water supply side

If the water collection points are located close to the heating tank, the connection is made according to the standard diagram presented below. Let us explain the functions of some elements:

  • It is recommended to use a pressure reducer for pressure surges above 6 Bar;
  • a check valve on the cold water supply prevents the tank from emptying into the water main;
  • the expansion tank compensates for the increase in the volume of heated liquid;
  • a safety valve set at 7 bar discharges water into the sewer if the pressure rises to a critical level;
  • The drain valve is used to drain water using the method of communicating vessels.

It is important to leave the drain line filled - then when the drain valve is opened, the water will flow out according to the law of communicating vessels

Attention! Use in the piping an expansion tank designed for water supply systems and designed for higher pressure - 6...8 Bar. The container is not suitable for heating - the membrane will quickly become unusable.

When consumers are away from the boiler, it is worth installing a recirculation line with an additional pump and check valve. If your heater model does not have a separate fitting for connecting this line, simply cut the return line into the cold water inlet line.

Before starting a system with a water heater of the “tank inside the tank” type, you must first fill the internal tank with sanitary water, only then pump in the coolant and perform pressure testing. The master will tell you the details in the video:

About the selection criteria

Before choosing the best option for this type of boiler, you need to understand what to look for.

We decided to briefly talk about the most significant criteria of all. Their knowledge and understanding will help you choose the most suitable option for you.

Storage tank volume

Its quantity is determined by daily needs and the boiler to which the water heater will be connected. If it is calculated incorrectly, there will be a problem with the appearance of hot water in several places at once. To prevent this from happening, you need to calculate the required volume in your boiler. As a rule, one person uses, on average, up to eighty liters of water per month. So much is spent not only on hygiene, but also on washing dishes.

Conclusion: you need to take a boiler with a reserve volume so that there is enough for everyone.

Volume is an important criterion when selecting a high-quality water heater

Storage tank material

Today tanks are made from three materials:

  • steel with enamel;
  • "stainless steel";
  • titanium coating.

Titanium is rarely used, but its strength is much higher, as is its price.

Conclusion: the tank must be made of a material that is resistant to corrosion. In addition, you need to pay attention to the presence of a magnesium anode.

Heat exchanger structure

There are two options for its structure.

  1. "Matryoshka" With this structure, one tank is located in another. The one inside is filled with water. The one on the outside is where the coolant circulates.
  2. Heat exchanger with coil. Typically one coil is used, although more than one can be used.

Important! If there are two coils, the boiler can be connected to a second heat source.

How does an indirect heating boiler work?

heating element

If you have a tubular electric heater, the boiler can be used all year round. If it is impossible to connect an alternative heating element, the water heater will heat from the mains.

Inlet pressure

This indicator is one of the determining criteria when installing it in an apartment, since central heating often fluctuates.

Conclusion: you need to take durable boiler models.

It is important to consider what water pressure will be at the inlet

Find out more about the correct connection of an indirect heating boiler with your own hands - in the article you will find detailed step-by-step instructions.

Making a boiler with your own hands using wood

The product has a samovar design and does not depend on power supply.

  • First of all, you should make a furnace that will heat the water inside the titanium.
  • The tank can be installed on a stove welded from a piece of large-diameter metal pipe or made of brick.
  • For a brick stove, the water container can be either square or round. The chimney pipe is welded to a metal panel that will cover the stove from above. A water tank without a bottom is welded to the metal surface of the furnace.
  • A potbelly stove-type stove is made from a pipe in which holes are cut for the firebox and ash doors. To lay the grate, brackets are strengthened inside the pipe. The bottom and top of the container are welded with sheets of metal. The chimney pipe is welded to a round hole that is cut in the top of the stove. The pipe will have to pass through the container and heat the water to the desired temperature.
  • The chimney is vented to the street.
  • For water to flow in and out, two pipes should be welded to the tank.
  • In a DIY boiler, water can be poured manually, come from a storage tank installed above the structure, or from the main line.

Such water heaters are capable of not only supplying hot water, but also heating the room.

By installing a DIY boiler and opening the tap, you can instantly get hot water. Compared to water heaters that run on electricity or gas, a boiler will help you save on energy.

Which indirect heating boiler is worth purchasing?

As mentioned earlier, choosing a boiler requires taking into account a large number of criteria. Among them, several important ones stand out.

  1. Number of people.
  2. Water consumption rate.
  3. Number of water points.
  4. Storage tank volume.
  5. Power.
  6. Inlet pressure.
  7. Water heating speed.

Taking into account all the above criteria, we decided to help you choose water heater models that are suitable in most cases.

  1. If you have a small living space and you live alone or with someone, then a boiler model like the Gorenje GV 100 will be more than enough.
  2. If you have a larger living space and your family consists of 2-3 members, then you should take the Baxi Premier plus 150.
  3. A two-story house in which four people live? Then you need to pay attention to the Drazice OKC 200 NTRR model.
  4. If your life is at the “luxury” level, then there is only one option for you - Protherm FS B300S.

What parameters should you pay attention to when choosing a water heater?

There are several important points to note here:

  • Economic expediency . An indirect heating unit should be purchased if there is a high volume of hot water consumption (for example, in a family of four or more people). When heating a room with an electric boiler, the use of such a boiler will increase financial costs.
  • Volume of the tank . It is also selected based on the volume of consumption. It is believed that on average one person needs no more than one hundred liters of hot water per day.
  • Power . The efficiency of the device depends on this parameter. The higher the power, the more productive the device, but also the less economical in terms of energy consumption.
  • Heater material . Anti-corrosion protection inside the boiler is provided by enamel or glass-ceramics, or stainless steel or titanium (in more expensive models).
  • Dimensions and weight . All indirect heating devices have impressive dimensions and corresponding weight. When choosing a water heater, you must take into account the size of the room where it will be installed.

How to heat in summer and off-season

The main question that arises with an indirect heating boiler is how water treatment will be carried out in the summer and in the off-season, when the heating boiler works “a little bit”.

If the boiler is solid fuel, and it is not possible to heat it in the summer, then the hot water supply will not work. The solution is to use an additional heater tank, or to choose a boiler with a built-in additional electric heater. Also, in the off-season, to heat the boiler, you will have to manually accelerate the solid fuel boiler to heat the water, which is not convenient. This must be taken into account when choosing the type of boiler, as well as when choosing its volume - a smaller one heats up faster.

There are no problems with automated boilers - they heat the boiler separately from the heating system, and can always prepare hot water on command, at the touch of a button.
