Rating of TOP 13 motherboards for Ryzen 5 and 7 (2700, 3600, 3800, 5600X): review and characteristics of the best models

Criteria for choosing a motherboard for CPU Ryzen

Important! Choosing a motherboard for Ryzen processors involves a number of factors that you should pay close attention to:

  • Manufacturer. In addition to personal preferences, it is worth considering the reliability and popularity of the brand. Among the best are ASRock, MSI, Gigabyte, Asus.
  • Socket. The best option is AM4. The socket supports the most modern and popular processors from AMD.
  • RAM. Modern motherboards support DDR4 memory type. This is the best option today. For an office computer, 32 GB of RAM will be sufficient, for a gaming computer - 128 GB of RAM.
  • Expansion slots and connectors. M.2, PCI-E, SATA slots, RAM slots, and USB ports should be sufficient for the tasks at hand. Also, a little reserve for the future never hurts.
  • Chipset. The brand of chipset determines what processor capabilities will be available. For Ryzen 9 and 7, the best option is the X570. In the case of the R5, this is the B450 chipset.

Introduction

In May, my old computer turned 11 years old from the date of purchase, which was bought for the end of the ninth grade. Imagine how long ago it was. But, nevertheless, he calmly copes with the tasks assigned to him. And now it is still quite suitable for office tasks with a reserve of several years. You can study my previous build in this article - Should I buy a new computer or upgrade an old one?

It’s worth mentioning that my budget was around 20,000-25,000 rubles. Perhaps this is very little for a full-fledged system unit in 2021, but I will not buy everything, but only: a processor, a motherboard and RAM. I keep the rest of the components from my previous computer.

The most exciting thing for me was the transition from Intel to AMD, since I spent a very long time on Intel. And I can’t say anything bad, everything worked and is still working to this day. But the cost of Intel components is much more expensive than AMD. This was the main argument in favor of switching to AMD processors.

The best models for Ryzen 5, 7, 9 on the B450 chipset

This type of connection required 4 years of evolution of standards (from SATA Express to M.2), and it’s so easy to just give it up. In addition, for some reason the DVI video output disappeared. In general, we do not recommend this board precisely because of the discrepancy between the capabilities and cost.

MSI X570-A PRO

This is an option at least for the 3rd generation Ryzen, but nevertheless meets all modern requirements.

Specifications MSI X 570- A PRO

Form factorATX
Processor (overclocking)Ryzen 5 (high) Ryzen 7 (mid) Ryzen 9 (low)
Memory frequency2133-4400 MHz
Audio codecALC1220
Audio connectors5
OpticsYes
LAN cardRealtek
Video connectorsHDMI
Number of USB Type-A7
Number of USB Type-C1
M.2 slots2 (SATA, PCI-E)
Wi-Fi/BluetoothNo

This is a full-size motherboard with the minimum required power supply and medium-sized radiators. However, this is quite enough for a good overclocking of the Ryzen 5 and the average Ryzen 7, but it is better to use the Ryzen 9 as stock, since the power system will not withstand it during overclocking (there will be overheating and VRM power throttling).

You can also see from the photo that the chipset heatsink is equipped with a fan, which looks like an anachronism and a throwback to the past. But this is a forced decision, inherent in all motherboards based on the new hot X570 chipset. But the fan does not always work, but turns on only temporarily under load that causes the chipset to heat up above normal.

There will be no problems with installing fast memory; at least modules with a fairly high frequency of about 3600 MHz will work absolutely stably, which was an almost unattainable value for motherboards with previous chipsets (where everything was already limited to a frequency of 3000-3200 MHz). It is possible and there is no point in overpaying for even faster memory, since stability of operation is not guaranteed, plus any memory can also be overclocked. I would take 3000-3200 sticks and overclock them to 3600 MHz, or generally, as an economy option, the most inexpensive 2400/2666 MHz sticks (for example, from Crucial) overclocked to 3000/3200 MHz.

The audio codec here is top-notch, it is ALC1220 from Realtek, everything is fine with shielding and wiring, there are 5 standard 3.5 mm audio connectors for connecting stereo speakers or multi-channel acoustics, leaving the possibility of connecting a headset (since there is noise and interference on the front connectors of the case). Plus there is an optical output, which will allow you to connect a high-quality digital system and get sound without distortion, as the speaker manufacturer intended. This possibility should not be ruled out, since this is no longer the future, but everyday practice.

The network card here is also from Realtek, which produces budget chips, but they are quite sufficient for normal Internet operation, which is enough for most users.

The only video connectors here are HDMI, which cannot be considered a drawback, since the powerful Ryzen processors for which this motherboard is designed still do not have built-in video and require a video card in any case. This may only be important for those who plan to use a Ryzen processor with integrated graphics for the first time. In this case, pay attention to this so that you can connect your monitor. And if you also connect a TV, you will have to fork out for a more expensive motherboard, which also has DisplayPort.

There are 7 full-size USB ports, which will satisfy users with a large number of peripherals (5 ports is not enough, the optimal recommended number is 6 or more). For example, I have all 7 ports occupied and there are still rarely used devices that are not connected. Plus, there is also a modern Type-C connector, which, however, is rarely used anywhere. We deliberately do not focus on the connector versions, since everywhere there are usually 2 USB 2.0 connectors, which are usually used to connect a keyboard and mouse or install the system from a flash drive in problematic cases. The remaining connectors have a faster version of USB 3.1 or 3.2 (in this case), which will not make a difference to anyone.

This motherboard has 2 M.2 slots for SSD drives with support for SATA and PCI-E interfaces, which is more than enough for all users (usually only one such SSD is installed). The location of the first slot on the video card is optimal, since it will not be covered by the video card, which significantly worsens cooling (fast SSDs get very hot). There is no standard radiator here (in most cases it is not needed), but nothing prevents you from installing an SSD with a radiator or purchasing a radiator separately (for very hot SSDs). The powerful power supply system of this motherboard, together with sufficiently sized radiators, will allow you to overclock even the most powerful processor well. And ASUS's famous stability and flexibility in overclocking makes it the best choice for an enthusiast.

It’s surprising that despite the fact that this series was never classified as a gaming series and PRIME motherboards were always limited in terms of sound, network, etc., this model has all the attributes inherent in more expensive and pretentious gaming products.

There is a top-end audio codec and a full set of audio connectors including optics and even an Intel network connection, plus DisplayPort. One of the M.2 ports is well located above the video card, and the second is even better - below, and even covered by a radiator.

Add here the built-in Aura backlight with synchronization, which makes it possible to create a beautiful system like with more expensive motherboards, and it’s unclear why you should pay more? ASUS PRIME X570-PRO motherboard
