Kitchen hood with carbon filter, top best models

When it comes to a range hood, people immediately imagine a flow-type or combined type device hanging above the tile. However, manufacturers also offer exhaust hoods with special carbon filters. Many simply do not know about their existence, others think that they purify the air worse. Is it really? Let's talk about the advantages of coal hoods, the principle of their operation, and how to choose the right device for your home.

Why do you need a filter in the hood?

Before determining why a filter is needed in a hood, let’s clarify the fact that kitchen hoods operate on mains power. They are divided into two main types:

  1. Air venting. They have an outlet sleeve that is built into the shaft or goes outside. The motor draws air from the room and removes it outside. The design is more complex to install and requires permanent installation directly above the slab with a pipe outlet.
  2. Recirculation. They do not have an air vent. They draw in air, clean it and release it back into the room. It is easier to install such devices, since they can be installed anywhere, regardless of the shaft and end walls. This hood looks more aesthetically pleasing. And besides, it has one more advantage: it provides a flow of clean air without the need to ventilate the room.

Being above the hob, the device draws in various fumes, particles of fat, and splashes. If a filter is not installed in the hood, then all these contaminants will quickly get into the motor and damage it. Air exhaust devices are often installed in shafts, and the air they extract passes up all floors (when the house is multi-story). If the filter does not retain odors and certain contaminants, the neighbors above will suffer from dirty air. After all, through the holes in the shaft it somehow seeps into other apartments.

In recirculating models, a filter is needed not only to protect the engine, but also to maximize the purification of the air that returns to the room.

Thus, filters in kitchen hoods perform two important functions at once:

  1. Protect the engine from grease, burning and other contaminants.
  2. Provide an environmentally friendly microclimate in homes.

Types of filtration exhaust devices

The variety of recirculating kitchen hoods is not inferior to classic flow-through devices.

Depending on the location and method of installation, the following types of exhaust devices are distinguished:

  • mounted horizontal;
  • vertical;
  • slider;
  • built-in;
  • island.

Hinged horizontal hoods without removing air masses are mounted in the classic version - openly placed above a gas or electric stove. Their big advantage is their small size, which allows you to place elements of kitchen furniture at the top.

Vertical recirculating hoods for the kitchen can be called an innovation in this segment of household appliances. They are mounted behind the stove or in the countertop. If necessary, place it in the working position - vertically, at a slight angle, behind or to the side of the burner area.

Telescopic (slider or retractable) kitchen hoods have reduced dimensions in the non-working position. When you turn on the device, its working surface doubles due to the retractable panel.

Built-in models allow you to preserve the design while being placed inside a wall-mounted kitchen cabinet. In this case, the cabinet itself can be used completely for its intended purpose, since there is no air duct.

Island models of recirculating hoods amaze the imagination with their variety of shapes and sizes. Mount them above the kitchen stove, attaching them to the ceiling. The absence of an air duct allows you to “mask” the hood without venting it under the decorative elements of the room.

Types of filters in hoods

Modern exhaust devices use three types of filters:

  1. Fatty.
  2. Coal.
  3. Universal.

Let us consider in detail each type of filtration systems.

Grease filter for hood

A grease filter is an essential component of any hood. It traps fumes, grease and any other food splashes, preventing them from depositing on the internal walls, fan and motor. Without this filter, within 2-3 months all the insides of the hood would become greasy, sticky and very dirty, and the engine would most likely burn out soon.

The grease filter can be disposable or reusable. It is installed in a flat bottom panel through which air is taken in.

Disposable hood filters

Disposable filters for hoods are found mainly in inexpensive models. They are a layer of synthetic material: padding polyester, non-woven fabric or acrylic. The service life of such filters depends on the frequency of use of the stove. On average it is 1-2 months.

Such filters cannot be cleaned. When they become dirty, they must be removed and replaced with new ones. In some models of hoods, spare disposable “mats” are included. In other cases, they must be purchased separately, which involves regular costs.

But there is an advantage to this: you don’t need to waste time and effort on cleaning.

Reusable hood filters

A reusable exhaust filter is a fine metal mesh made of galvanized steel, aluminum or stainless steel. Such structures are durable and do not require replacement.

When they become dirty, they need to be removed and washed. As a rule, they have special locks for easy removal and fastening.

Stainless steel meshes are considered the highest quality. They do not oxidize and are not deformable. Depending on the specific model of the hood and its size, the reusable grease-absorbing filter can be single (solid) or consisting of 2-3 separate cassettes.

What is better - exhaust air into ventilation or recirculation?

Hoods without an air duct have enough arguments in their favor:

  • Does not depend on the condition of the ventilation shaft.
  • They have very compact sizes. A 50 cm hood is perfect for installation in the kitchen.
  • There is no need to forcefully ventilate the room.
  • The price of the hood and components is quite affordable.
  • Replacement of filters is simple and can be done without the help of specialists.

Hoods have two types of filters – grease and carbon. In order for filters to work effectively, they must be monitored regularly.

Reasons for filter contamination

The kitchen hood sucks in dirty air, soot and fumes. The filter protects the internal surface of the device from small particles of fat that settle on the outside of the grille from entering the engine.

The longer the ventilation runs, the more the filter mesh becomes clogged with a sticky oily layer with an unpleasant odor.

A carbon catcher is installed additionally in recirculation models. Absorbent in the form of granules or powder absorbs harmful and bad-smelling substances. If they accumulate, it is impossible to clean the hood's carbon filter; the cartridges need to be changed periodically.

Types of recirculation exhaust systems for the kitchen

We are used to dividing existing units for combating unpleasant odors after cooking into coal and flow-through ones. Today we will look at how, in turn, the first options are divided into types. Additionally, hoods without air ducts vary in terms of technical specifications, design, as well as the number of cleaning levels and installed filters. In addition, these devices are built-in and wall-mounted.

  1. The good thing about the built-in model of a coal hood is that the entire block, in which the working mechanism is hidden, is placed directly in the kitchen unit, thus not aggravating the kitchen space with completely unnecessary details.
  2. Attachment devices do not require installation in cabinets, so they can only be attached to the wall and represent a unit of considerable size. However, there are also compact hoods, which are often purchased for small kitchens.

Don’t buy into the luxury of a charcoal hood model; study the entire range thoroughly, because little-known brands can be just as high-quality.

GOOD TO KNOW!

We advise you to buy models with low noise levels, as they can work directly while the hostess is cooking and in the kitchen, creating a favorable atmosphere.

Mechanical control of hoods is divided into push-button and slider. You will have to decide on your convenience yourself.

Make your own carbon filter

This is possible if you know where to install it and understand the features of its operating principle and the chemistry of the process itself. Standard filtration systems include a conventional fan and staged cleaning barriers.

Taking into account the class of pollution, types of obstacles are distinguished according to the following types:

  • — electrostatic filter. Copes with small dust elements (not less than 0.01 microns)
  • – mechanical coarse filter. It allows you to trap large dust particles. (not less than 0.3 microns)
  • — photocatalytic filter. The principle of its operation is to decompose chemical elements and destroy bacteria using UV radiation
  • — the activated carbon filter works by adsorption. It is needed to purify gaseous pollutants

  • - biofilter is used to purify gas contaminants
  • - antistatic - these are various sprays and aerosols intended for addition to the air washer
  • — filter for compressed air. Its application is for use in industrial plants and removes water and oil vapors

REFERENCE

Activated carbon is a pure form of carbon. Activated carbon includes a water-repellent porous surface. This property is the best way to remove odors from the air because charcoal does not absorb water. Activated carbon, which is used for filtration, varies in three pore sizes, depending on the feedstock. It could be coal, nut shells or wood. The coal made from nut shells contains the most pores.

Hoods by type of design

  1. Hanging.

Placed directly above the hob, it is equipped with filters that absorb small particles and fat that rises with the steam. Suspended models with outlets into the ventilation ducts using a corrugated hose work more efficiently.

Compactness (suitable for even the smallest kitchen) and affordable cost have made this design popular.

  1. Built-in.

It is completely hidden in the closet and does not stand out against the background of the kitchen set as a separate element. Functionality may vary depending on cost and additional features.

  1. Dome.

It involves connection to the ventilation system, and therefore is considered the most powerful and is suitable for large kitchens.

  1. Corner.

An interior option when a hob with corner placement is provided.

  1. Island or T-shaped.

Typically for larger kitchen complexes where a ceiling mounting structure may be required. These are the most powerful models that perfectly eliminate odors.

Why clean your hood?

An electrical household appliance requires regular maintenance not only for aesthetic reasons. A clogged filter has a weak ability to conduct air masses, which affects the efficiency and speed of the hood. Dense fatty deposits in the grid cells reduce the service life of the engine and lead to overheating.

A dirty, clogged filter poses a safety risk because it can cause the appliance to catch fire.

For people suffering from allergies or with a weakened immune system, combustion breakdown products are especially harmful: formaldehyde, carbon monoxide, nitrogen dioxide. If the hood is not cleaned of grease, toxins accumulate in large quantities in the air and cause illness.

Food dirt attracts insects such as cockroaches and fruit flies, which are difficult to get rid of.

Installation process

To install a circulation hood, it is connected to the general ventilation shaft. These actions are coordinated with the management company. She may not give permission, justifying this by the fact that dirty air will enter neighbors’ apartments and the efficiency of natural ventilation will be disrupted.

Hoods without outlets are installed in any place and room without approval. Installation does not require any specific knowledge; you can do it yourself.

The procedure is as follows:

  1. First, check the strength of the base on which you plan to mount the hood. Prepare a cabinet for a built-in appliance.
  2. Install a separate power point with grounding.
  3. Take the product out of the box and check the kit according to the instructions.
  4. Mark the distance between the appliance and the hob. It should be 75 cm to a gas stove, 65 cm to an electric stove.
  5. Check for free space at the air outlet.
  6. Mark places for fastenings. Install them using a drill or screwdriver.
  7. Then the hood is hung on the mounts, plugged in and checked for functionality.

Design and principle of operation of a carbon filter

The appearance of the filter may vary, as it is made of either plastic or synthetic fabric. In the first case, it is a round or rectangular plastic cassette filled with activated carbon in the form of powder or granules; in the second, it is a dense piece of material impregnated with the same activated carbon.

Sometimes these two types are combined to create more effective protection against hot vapors and impurities that pass through them.

Charcoal cassettes are often round in shape and sold in sets of two. The plastic from which the cassette body is made is safe and does not emit harmful substances when heated

Carbon filters should not be confused with anti-grease filters, which are a metal mesh or grate and are the first stage of protection. Particles of fat and substances settle on the anti-fat barrier - this is a kind of coarse filter, but it does not retain odors.

And the charcoal filter passes through air that has already been cleared of grease, and this is what eliminates unpleasant and pungent cooking aromas.

The carbon filter is hidden inside the housing. Most often it is attached directly to the motor. And everyone has seen the anti-grease grille - it’s a steel or aluminum mesh, which is in plain sight, at the bottom of the hood

When choosing replacement units for your hood, you should follow the manufacturer’s recommendations. The fact is that in order to increase the demand for products, most of the filter cassettes and cartridges are universal in nature, that is, they are suitable not for one specific model, but for several. The list can contain up to 20 items.

On the packaging, the manufacturer indicates for which models of kitchen hoods the filter element is suitable (+)

You should ask the seller about the availability of consumables before purchasing a hood, otherwise you will soon encounter an unpleasant situation. After six months or 3-4 months (the service life is indicated in the instructions), you will want to purchase replacement cartridges, but you will not be able to find them on the open market.

This is especially true for the latest models that have just appeared on the market. If the problem has already occurred, try looking for a replacement in online stores.

Operating principle of coal protection:

  • First, the air passes through a dense layer of viscose soaked in a charcoal solution. Some of the impurities and fat remain in the fabric structure.
  • The partially purified air is then directed into the cassette where the granules are located. Activated carbon has remarkable properties - it not only traps residual impurities, but also absorbs specific odors.

Several cleaning cycles completely free the air flow of dirt and kitchen aroma. When the properties of the filler, “clogged” with grease and dirt, decrease, a new filter must be installed. In this regard, devices with sensors that indicate the need for replacement are very convenient.

How to choose a carbon filter for your hood: general recommendations

According to the recommendations, when choosing a suitable option, you should first of all take into account that most carbon filters are designed specifically for built-in or suspended hoods. On each package, the manufacturer indicates for which system its products can be used. When choosing the appropriate option, you should focus on:

  • type of filter element. If cassettes were initially installed, you cannot make a choice in favor of inserts. Although the latter are much cheaper;
  • installation location. Not only the standard sizes of the product are taken into account, but also their spatial location;
  • the availability of a carbon filter from the same company that produced the hood. This will guarantee long-term and efficient operation of the filter system.

When purchasing a hood, purchase several carbon filters at once so that you don’t have to think about finding a replacement cassette for a long time.

Service life of filter elements

The manufacturer produces filter elements with an unlimited shelf life. If the filter has not been used, it will last for more than one year. During operation, the filter cassette gradually wears out and the period when it becomes completely unusable depends on the intensity and frequency of use of the kitchen.

If the owners are used to eating out, using the kitchen to make coffee in the morning or heat food from a restaurant in a microwave oven, then the carbon filter on their hood will last for more than one year. It’s a completely different matter when several different dishes are prepared daily for a large number of people. Under such conditions, it is not even recommended to use recirculating hoods, since you will have to spend money on replacement cassettes almost every season.

Below are the service life of filters for the “golden mean” (when using the stove at least once daily):

  • metal disposable grease trap – 60-90 days;
  • reusable coarse cleaning element - unlimited;
  • regular carbon element – 4-6 months;
  • universal type carbon filter – 8-12 months.

Some designs of filter cassettes (with loose or granular filler) provide the ability to open the housing and replace the contents as they become dirty. This eliminates the need for frequent purchases of cassettes: it is cheaper to purchase a filler that will last several times than a new filter.

To extend the life of the carbon filter, leave the hood on for 4-5 minutes after cooking. During this time, it will allow drier air to pass through, which will dry out the filter element filler. As a result, the granules or powder are not compressed so quickly, and the filter will work longer.

On a note. This tip will not only extend the life of the cartridge, but also improve the performance of the hood itself.

Another way to increase the service life of the carbon filter in the hood is regular and timely maintenance of the external grease trap. After all, when the grille becomes dirty, all large particles of fat, soot and dirt fall under the hood body and contaminate the sorbing element. If coal is less exposed to contamination, it remains loose longer and retains its cleaning ability.

Methods for cleaning metal mesh:

  1. Place the element under running boiling water and treat it with any soda-based cleaning agent.
  2. Clean in the dishwasher at the highest temperature setting.
  3. Blow with hot air from a steam cleaner.
  4. Wash the element thoroughly in soapy water using a brush.

These simple manipulations will help make the grease trap cleaner.

Important! To prevent the filter cassette from becoming clogged after cleaning, reinstall it after it has completely dried.

There are models of hoods that do not include a grease trap. Due to impracticality, it is better not to purchase such units.

How to care for your hood? Increasing efficiency

Any device needs care, especially something as important as a kitchen hood. Timely maintenance will extend the life of the model and also increase its efficiency.

Clean anti-grease filter – productive work

The anti-grease pad is quite effective - the good thing is that it can be cleaned manually:

  • The filter is removed from the hood, then placed in a large container with warm water.
  • Pour any detergent into the water that destroys fat cells.
  • Let it soak for 15-20 minutes, and then thoroughly clean it with a thick sponge or soft brush.
  • If metal filters are excessively dirty, use citric acid as a cleaner. Dissolve three or four sachets in water and allow the resulting solution to clean the part for 1-2 hours.
  • Rinse with clean water, dry thoroughly and dry with a hairdryer. Then return it to the hood.

Replacing the carbon filter

Carbon filters cannot be cleaned. However, there is a common folk practice to improve the performance of the filter - cleaning it with a powerful vacuum cleaner. The vacuum cleaner removes large contaminants, increasing the efficiency of the hood. But upon completion of the service life recommended by the manufacturer, it is worth replacing the filter.

How to replace the carbon filter yourself?

Replacing the carbon filter in a hood is a painstaking but doable task. Take your time and be careful not to damage the internal fasteners.

  • First, the hood is completely de-energized - be sure to remove the plug from the socket, even if there is a special “on/off” button on the body.
  • Remove and clean the anti-grease filters.
  • The filter cassette is secured quite tightly, but you need to handle it carefully. Carefully pull the cassette with the carbon filter out of the hood body and smoothly disconnect the filter itself from the cassette.
  • Usually the cassette is slightly dirty, but it is better to wipe it with an important cloth and let it dry.
  • Insert the new filter into the cassette and return it to the hood. The cassette must fit neatly into place to ensure quality performance.
  • Turn on the hood and check its operation. If assembled correctly, there will be no problems with air purification.

Pros and cons of carbon cartridges, differences from grease filters for hoods

There is a big difference between different types of filters. This is explained by the fact that anti-grease aluminum filters for hoods are considered designs that provide rough air purification, while after using carbon cartridges, the flow is freed from both large and small air pollutants.

Aluminum grease traps for hoods provide only rough air purification

Important! The main purpose of anti-grease filters is to protect the fans located inside the hood, and the use of carbon cartridges results in complete air purification.

The main advantages of carbon filters (relative to ordinary aluminum ones) are considered to be good performance and high-quality air purification from odors, as well as ease of replacing contaminated elements. To change the carbon filter, there is no need to contact a specialist or not use the device for a long time. It is not necessary to choose the most expensive types of filters. There is always the possibility of purchasing more affordable options that are not inferior in quality to the original cartridges.

An undoubted advantage of using coal systems, compared to ordinary grease removal systems, is the fact that the odors coming out through the ventilation shaft will not irritate the neighbors, since the air does not leave the kitchen.

Among the disadvantages of installing carbon systems, one can highlight the fact that most of them are disposable, unlike aluminum filters for hoods, which, when dirty, can be washed and cleaned using simple methods. In case of severe contamination of the carbon cartridge, the air is practically not purified.

The carbon adsorbent of the filter absorbs harmful impurities, and the internal filling of the cartridge absorbs even light ions

Flaws

Despite a lot of positive reviews left on the Internet about carbon filters, they also have disadvantages. For example, recirculating hoods based on carbon filters require mains power to operate. This, in turn, leads to higher electricity bills. We must not forget that, for all their effectiveness, these devices are not able to clean the air of pollutants completely 100%.

The lifespan of cartridges may vary, but all elements of this type need to be replaced and over time reduce the effectiveness of air purification.

It’s not enough to buy the right barrier; it’s also important to learn how to use the hood correctly. Carbon filters are always disposable. No matter how economical the operation of the hood itself is, they will have to be changed in any case, because over time they will no longer cope with their main task.

How to install a new replacement unit

The most important recommendation when installing new cassettes or replacing old ones is to carefully read the manufacturer’s instructions. It indicates the procedure and some important nuances that relate to specific models.

For example, a simple carbon cartridge installed on the wrong side will not work correctly, and instead of clean air you will get wasted energy.

The instructions are often presented in the form of a plan - a step-by-step description of actions, sometimes accompanied by pictures. Responsible manufacturers complete their products with discs with video instructions or simply provide a link to the manufacturer’s website, where you can find all the information you need.

We offer examples of instructions that will help you when installing filters for various models.

Option #1. Replacement filter for the Shindo Aliot PS model - there is only one replaceable element, it looks like a rectangular panel.

Option #2. Some hoods with a combined cleaning method have two filters that are attached to both sides of the motor. Let's look at how to install round coal cassettes for the Pyramid hood.

When the hood operates in flow mode, it is not necessary to install carbon filters. If they are nevertheless installed, and the equipment operates in different modes, then the shelf life of the filter is increased due to intermittent use.

Inexpensive carbon filters are easiest to purchase where kitchen hoods are sold - in home appliance supermarkets. For example, a set of carbon filters for a Krohn hood is easier to find in a store that sells equipment from this manufacturer.

If you don’t find consumables of the right brand, look for an option among the universal offers. Here are some universal type filters.

When does it make sense to install a recirculating hood?

Not every kitchen can install an air vent. Problems usually arise in apartments where the kitchen and living room areas are combined, in rooms where there is a large distance from the stove to the ventilation shaft or there is no ventilation shaft at all. Some housewives do not want to spoil the look of their kitchen furniture with eyeliner. Pollution accumulates, we breathe it, smells from food spread throughout the apartment and are absorbed into things. Install a hood with a filter and the problems will be solved.

Polluted air enters the filter, is cleaned, and then enters our lungs again. Everything would be simple if it were not for the variety of exhaust systems, each of which has its own advantages and disadvantages.

How to choose the right filter

If you choose a hood that operates in recirculation mode, the requirements for air purification increase. After all, the function is not only to collect soot and grease, it is necessary to purify the air from the smallest contaminants. This is quite delicate work. And a carbon filter will do a great job with it.

It is used in models of hoods without air exhaust, that is, without that large massive pipe that sometimes stretches along the ceiling of an entire kitchen. They are located behind the grease filters.

The basis of the carbon filter, as you might guess from its name, is activated carbon - a well-known absorbent. It perfectly absorbs and reliably retains harmful substances inside. The only drawback is that these filters have to be changed, and they cost from 250 rubles and more, depending on the quality and company.

  • Check the model and brand of your hood. The filter you choose sometimes won't fit your hood, so you'll have to check compatibility.
  • Check the service life of the filter. The quality life of a standard filter is 1-3 months.

Signs that it's time to change the filter

Indirect signs help to judge the degree of filter wear:

  • the appearance of a sticky fatty coating on the body;
  • reduction in operating efficiency (for example, if the hood is working, but unpleasant odors are still felt);
  • the appearance of extraneous noises, knocks;
  • reduction of traction.

The most advanced models of hoods are equipped with sensors for monitoring the condition of the filter element. But in most cases you have to rely only on the calendar and indirect signs.

Do not delay servicing the exhaust device. A clogged cartridge places a significant load on the electric motor, which leads to increased electricity consumption and creates a risk of hood failure.

Popular built-in hoods with an elite class carbon filter

The FALMEC Downdraft 600 120 WH, a coal hood built into the countertop for a kitchen without an air duct, is distinguished by its original design. The device body is made of stainless steel with tempered glass inserts. The device is controlled using an electronic touch panel and remote control. The device can operate in one of four modes, including intensive. The model is equipped with LED lighting. The hood operates with a noise level of 66 dB.

The air is purified from grease and fumes using a stainless steel grease filter and from kitchen odors thanks to a charcoal cassette. The productivity of the device reaches 960 m³/h, the power is 320 W. You can buy a hood for 160 thousand rubles.

The ideal solution for a large kitchen or a room combined with a living room or dining room is a built-in electric hood for ceiling mounting Smeg KSC90B. The device provides perimeter suction of contaminated air, which is cleaned of fats thanks to special stainless steel filters. A carbon filtration system is used to eliminate odors. The hood can operate at three speeds and in intensive mode with maximum suction power. The productivity of the device is 830 m³/h, the power is 224 W.

The FALMEC Downdraft 600 120 WH device is designed for installation in a countertop.

The hood operates quietly with a noise level of 50 dB, which is achieved thanks to specially designed mechanisms and exceptional insulation of the device during installation, muffling the noise. The device is backlit in the form of halogen lamps. The hood can be programmed to turn off automatically, which will happen 10-25 minutes after the cooking process is completed. The model is equipped with a remote control. You can buy a “smart” device for 145 thousand rubles.

Purpose of hoods

When choosing a hood, attention is paid to performance. So the equipment must pump an amount of air equal to ten times the volume of the room in one hour of operation. All other options will be considered useless. Because they will not be able to remove all accumulated moisture, and this will lead to damage to walls or equipment. In addition, if a person is cooking indoors, a hood will help quickly get rid of carbon dioxide and food odors.

How effective the hood is can be judged by the grille that is installed above the stove. In one month, a large amount of grease and other contaminants forms there. If the device did not work, then all the dirt would settle on the kitchen appliances and walls. However, cleaning it is not as easy as it might seem. We must not forget that constant cooking in conditions of high humidity will sooner or later lead to premature aging of sofas, ceilings and walls. Therefore, a person will have to renovate and buy new furniture.

All contaminated air must leave the room. To achieve this goal, it is enough to buy a hood. At the same time, models are sold today that can easily remove exhaust gas outside or renew air masses using filtration.

Advantages of models with outlet

This option is the most widely used and is used in almost all apartments. The products are not difficult to control and can be easily used near various gas or electric stoves. There is a special umbrella, which is equipped with a removable grille, where various droplets of fat and dust accumulate. This element is an important detail, as it prevents large particles from entering the common channel. Often only forced ventilation is used; for this purpose, the design provides space for one or more fans.

In order for the product to work flawlessly, good inflow must be ensured. If it is not there, the user may encounter a problem such as tipping over. Therefore, air from the ventilation duct will penetrate into the room, unpleasant odors will begin to appear, and the efficiency of the hood will become zero.

Models without outlet

Such devices are powerful air filters. The structure is installed in the same place as the previous version, but unlike them, the dimensions are larger. Therefore, the product may not be suitable for small kitchens. In addition to the removable grille and cooler, the equipment provides space for:

  • Coarse filter settings. The main purpose of the element is to retain moisture, fatty particles, and dust. The product is a small aluminum (and sometimes plastic) grille that is used repeatedly and does not require any replacement;
  • The carbon filter is used as the main element to remove microscopic particles; it also absorbs various vapors and unpleasant odors. Unlike the previous filter, the service life of the carbon filter is only one month, after which it must be replaced with a new one. The element cannot be purified; the only thing a person can do is dispose of it.

Circulation hood

In addition to models with and without outlet, some manufacturers produce circulation options. Most of these products fully comply with sanitary standards and can be installed not only at home, but also in public catering areas. But it is important to understand that circulation hoods will cost more, since they only have fans with a powerful electric motor.

Types of hoods for the kitchen

The entire variety of kitchen air purifiers can be divided into two large groups. Each has its own advantages and disadvantages. Think about having a source of additional air, decide what the kitchen with an air vent will look like, perhaps it can be covered with a cornice, who will install it, how much you are willing to spend on installation or regular replacement of components.

Flow hoods

This type is connected to the air duct. The difference from the recirculation one is that the latter purifies the air, and the former renews it - air flows leave the room. Solve the problem of fresh air access if you install a flow-through option.

Without venting

Another name is recirculation. The engine rotates the fan, the air masses pass through the filter and are cleaned. First, fat particles settle in the grease trap, which absorbs dust and harmful fumes. Then the carbon filter traps remaining dirt and purifies the air.

Design and features of coal exhaust

You can find conflicting opinions about coal hoods - from total respect to complete contempt. Opponents believe that no filter can cope with annoying kitchen aromas. And maintenance of a device with carbon filters will cost a pretty penny. A closer acquaintance with this technique will help to defeat these beliefs.

Is a carbon filter necessary?

A common feature in the kitchen is a powerful hood with an air duct. It is she who is able to quickly remove exhaust air from the room, preventing it from spreading into adjacent rooms, provided that the power is correctly selected.

But the air does not have to be evacuated from the kitchen - it can be purified using devices with a fine filter.

Fine cleaning using a carbon filter allows you to remove all impurities from the exhaust air, which eliminates foreign odors

It is against a hood with carbon filters that many skeptics rebel, believing that it is in no way capable of coping with the task. And all arguments to the contrary are nothing more than advertising.

In fact, such a hood has repeatedly proven that it has the right to be used not only in private houses and apartments, but also in professional kitchens of restaurants, cafes and other premises where it is necessary to effectively purify exhaust air from impurities.

Not only does the device perfectly remove odors, but it is also easy to install and requires minimal maintenance. Moreover, all this, if desired, can be easily done independently - you don’t have to drill or break anything.

Few people like it when the aromas of fried potatoes and bacon spread not only on the 1st floor, but also rise to the 2nd thanks to the special layout of the room and the absence of interior doors

Another advantage is the wide price range. Hoods that rid the room of various aromas are designed both for users with modest demands and for fastidious and fairly wealthy owners.

In addition, a regular hood with an air duct can have the function of purifying air from impurities without removing it from the room - many models in the mid-price range have an additional operating mode. This is recirculation - by pressing one button, it switches to air purification mode without removing it from the room.

Also, without such a device it would be difficult to install in rooms where it is problematic to install a conventional hood that evacuates exhaust air into the ventilation shaft. Especially when there is simply no such mine, and the smells need to be gotten rid of somehow.

The shape and location of installation of a hood without exhaust air exhaust depends on the manufacturer’s imagination and allows even the most daring design solutions to be implemented.

Types and design of hoods without outlet

The hood that purifies exhaust air differs from the usual one by the presence of an additional fine filter. And in some cases, the absence of an air duct. These devices are produced by the same companies that produce evacuation hood models. Moreover, one hood can have 2 modes at once - air extraction and air purification.

Fine filters are usually made of heat-resistant material that can withstand high temperatures and contain an absorbent component - carbon

Such a device consists of the following parts:

  • housing that houses the main operating components;
  • control panels - it can be push-button or touch-sensitive;
  • the motor responsible for the operation of the unit;
  • coarse and fine filters - there can be 2 or more of them;
  • plugs for connecting to the network;
  • lighting lamps;
  • It is possible to have an air duct if the model has an evacuation mode of operation.

Depending on the model, such a hood may have a different appearance, a different number of operating modes, and will differ in the number of speeds, power and quality of performance of its main functions.

A coarse filter, also known as a grease filter, must be installed before the coal filter in an appliance that purifies the air in the kitchen from impurities and odors.

Air purification devices have one thing in common - the presence of an additional carbon filter and the ability to work without evacuating exhaust air. And the case material, its design, color and other features may be similar to models of exhaust devices from the same manufacturers.

Operating principle of the equipment

Equipment with fine filters operates in recirculation mode. It does not require the installation of special channels to remove exhaust air containing impurities and tiny particles of fat and soot.

The essence of how such a hood works is that it draws polluted air inside its body. Along the way there is a grease filter, on which larger particles of fat, soot and other impurities found in the exhaust air remain.

The grease filter needs frequent cleaning if the hood is used regularly. It is important to wash it when it gets dirty

Then comes the turn of the fine filter, in which the air is further purified from smaller particles. Some models have another carbon filter, which more delicately cleans the air that has passed through the grease and first carbon filters.

After cleaning, the air is returned back to the room. And a new portion of the waste gets back inside the equipment.

It turns out that the main role in the carbon device is played by filters. They differ in appearance - there are cassette systems and coal pillows. Most often, each model of hood uses its own carbon filter, but there are also universal ones that are suitable for many appliances.

The appearance, shape, weight and size of carbon filters differ greatly from each other and depend on the hood model

The carbon filter is made from various materials. This can be a disposable or reusable accessory. The main working component in it is the absorbent material – activated carbon. It happens:

  • stone;
  • peat;
  • coconut;
  • impregnated.

And the shape of the filter depends on the model and design of the hood. It can be round, rectangular, concave, flat, or in the form of a cassette of a couple of centimeters.

The service life of carbon filters depends on the frequency of switching on the hood and the duration of its operation. The more often this happens, the more often the filter will have to be changed. After all, when coal is filled with fat, soot and other impurities, the exhaust air practically does not pass through such a dirty filter. Accordingly, further cleaning is impossible without replacing or restoring the carbon accessory.

If desired, you can buy a universal carbon filter. It is given the desired shape and size using the most ordinary scissors. The main thing is that its installation does not affect the quality of the hood.

To slightly extend the performance of the carbon filter installed in the hood, manufacturers recommend turning on the equipment simultaneously with the start of the cooking process.

And turn it off only 5 minutes after turning off the stove/oven.

Working for 3-5 minutes after the end of the cooking process, the hood allows excess moisture to evaporate, which will prevent rapid wear of the carbon absorbent

Major manufacturers of carbon filters for household use

All companies that produce recirculating hoods for kitchens produce carbon filters. For the convenience of users, filters are made not only for standard rectangular hoods, but also for wall-mounted and corner options. Depending on the quality of the assembly, the operation of many hoods is carried out practically without unnecessary noise, which cannot be said about devices with an air duct.

It is not recommended to purchase carbon filters for hoods from dubious manufacturers.

When purchasing a model, you need to take into account the number of carbon filters and be sure to choose options equipped with grease nets for the hood. It must be remembered that the more built-in filters there are, the greater the number you need to buy for replacement, which will affect further waste.

You should not purchase cassettes for hoods from dubious manufacturers who do not indicate the recommended period for using filters. Otherwise, there is a possibility that the hood will not work effectively. It is necessary that the filter performance not only matches the performance of the hood fan, but also slightly exceeds this figure in order to increase its service life. For example, if according to the characteristics of the hood, it is designed to purify 250 cubic meters of air, and install a filter designed for 500 m³ in it, it will need to be changed not after 3 months, but at least after six months.

Important! Before purchasing a filter, you should make sure that it is suitable for a specific hood model, otherwise the purchase will be useless. You should also pay attention to the build quality and the availability of certificates from the seller.

Installation method

There are four different ways to install a kitchen hood. Before purchasing a product, you should figure out which model is suitable for a specific kitchen.

  • Flat hood. This model is a thin panel of small size. Installing the exhaust system is extremely simple - it is mounted above the hob perpendicular to the ceiling. This option will be a great addition to a small kitchen. Due to its low power, this hood is unable to filter a large volume of air.
  • Hanging system. Based on the name itself, you can guess that this hood is not attached to walls or furniture. It can be hung from the ceiling or from furniture. This design of the exhaust system is suitable for a kitchen that is located in the center of the room, that is, not adjacent to the walls.

Tips for choosing

Rectangular flat hoods without outlet are the most compact. They operate in recirculation mode and do not require complicated connections. If you are attracted by unprecedented compactness, then your choice will be obvious. Moreover, you will not need to run around all the stores looking for a suitable filter brand.

If you think that the flow of fresh air from the street is very important in the ventilation system in the kitchen, then you can consider combined types of purifiers. They can operate both in recirculation mode, adsorbing contaminants from the air, and in flow mode. Such hoods are connected to the ventilation system and provide the circulation of air masses, which housewives love so much. You can learn more about different hoods and make your choice using the classification of hoods.

It is impossible to unequivocally answer the question of how long a carbon filter lasts for an exhaust hood. Since the service life is influenced by several factors:

  1. Product quality.
  2. Frequency of use.
  3. Level of air pollution.
  4. Humidity level in the apartment.

Modern exhaust devices are equipped with a special detector that signals the need to replace the filter.

Average numbers

So, high-quality products can last about a year, while the cheapest samples will have to be changed every two months.

The average service life of filters of the most common brands is considered to be:

  • 3-4 months with intensive use, or if fried dishes predominate on the menu;
  • 5-6 months with gentle use (steamed dishes, rare use of the hood).

It is worth noting that the frequency of replacement is greatly influenced by the level of contamination of the coarse filter (mesh). The purpose of coal is to remove unpleasant odors. Grease, soot and other contaminants should settle on the mesh. If it is not cleaned in a timely manner, fatty deposits will clog the pores of the coal in just a few weeks.

The same goes for moisture. For the filter to work correctly, the absorbent material must remain porous. Excess moisture, after drying, compresses the coal into a single layer, which no longer retains odors.

Therefore, the hood should not be turned off immediately after finishing cooking, but after 5-10 minutes. Giving it time to remove any remaining moisture from the absorbent layer.

Naturally, when choosing a hood model, everyone is interested in the cost of consumables. How much a carbon filter for an exhaust hood will cost depends on the manufacturer, expected service life, level of cleaning and a number of other factors.

Ukrainian-made carbon filter shown

Note that for almost every expensive original model there is a cheaper alternative. And cheaper is not always worse. Some analogues are worthy competitors to the originals.

Below we have provided a table showing what factors affect the service life of a carbon filter.

FactorsImpact on service life
ManufacturerThe best results are achieved if the brand of hood and filter matches.
HumidityThe higher the humidity in the room, the shorter the absorbent will last
Hood use time per dayAll operating periods in the instructions are indicated based on operating time - 1-2 hours a day.
Compliance with instructionsRegular cleaning and replacement of filters will improve air quality and increase the life of the hood.
Additional barriersTypically, hood models with additional filters or synthetic fabric gaskets are much less likely to need to replace consumables.

If your filter has already become unusable, be sure to replace it. Moreover, it is not expensive - for example, carbon filters from the manufacturer Maunfeld cost in the range of 299-539 rubles.
