Finding and eliminating error e09 in the dishwasher

Why does error e09 appear?

In 10% of cases, error E09 in a dishwasher may indicate:

  • about software failure;
  • about faulty electrical wiring, poor contact in the socket;
  • about the discrepancy between the cross-section of the electrical cable and the power consumption of the equipment;
  • about a temperature sensor that has become unusable;
  • about errors in the operation of the main module.

In 90% of cases, this is a breakdown of the heating element, as a result of which it is necessary to repair or replace this heating element.

The following provoking factors lead to breakdown of the heating element:

  • period of operation of the machine: the older it is, the greater the likelihood of a malfunction;
  • scale on the heater, as a result of which it takes longer to heat the water, constantly overheats and, ultimately, burns out;
  • filter clogged: as a result, poor water circulation and overheating of the heating element, as a result, it fails;
  • worn-out pipes, hoses, seals lead to depressurization and water entering the contacts - a short circuit, the heating element burns out.

Deciphering the fault code

Code E09 on the screen of a household appliance indicates a malfunction of the heating element.
He notes that there was not just a breakdown, but the electric heater burned out. The heating element in a dishwasher is significantly different from those installed in washing machines. The part is embedded in the recirculation pump and cannot be changed separately from it. When the dishwasher is operating, the pump pumps water, which is then passed through the electric heater. The hot water pressure created in this way washes the kitchen utensils.

The unit of the device, consisting of a heating element and a pump, is called by repair specialists the “warm” engine of the machine. To make a replacement, you need to know the model of the device, since error code E09 appears only in household appliances belonging to the third generation.

In rare situations, the error indicates a failure of the temperature sensor and indicates incorrect functioning of the main module. This error code occurs when the electrical wiring that goes from the water heater to the module is damaged.

How to fix a problem in ten percent of cases

If the error appears for the first time, perhaps not everything is so bad and it is enough to reload the program. To do this, you need to turn off the power to the machine by unplugging the plug from the socket, wait 10 minutes and turn it on. If the error no longer appears, the problem has been resolved.

It is necessary to check the wiring, replace the socket, and eliminate the defect in the electrical network immediately. Delay can lead to fire, electric shock, and serious equipment breakdown with costly repairs.

If it is discovered that the water heating does not stop, or the dishwasher does not heat the water at all, you should pay attention to the temperature sensor. Overheating of the heating element will lead to its failure and may even cause a fire. Therefore, the dishwasher must be turned off immediately. The temperature sensor needs to be repaired or replaced.

Malfunctions of the control unit elements can lead to incorrect operation of the temperature control circuit of the water heater. Sensor failure occurs due to voltage fluctuations in the electrical network. This malfunction can be eliminated by replacing the electronic components on the control unit.

Reasons for error E09 appearing in a Bosch dishwasher

Error E09 can be caused by several problems. Some of them can be fixed without major repairs.

System failure

Sometimes even working dishwashers produce errors. If E09 occurred in the car for the first time, then it is possible that it was caused by a normal failure of the main module, while the equipment itself is in perfect order.

You can suspect a system failure if the error occurs in a completely new machine

Drain filter clogged

The filter located at the bottom of the dishwasher often becomes clogged with food debris and small debris. Because of this, liquid is drawn into the machine chamber slowly, the heating element overheats and begins to work not at full capacity. Until it fails, you can fix the problem by simply cleaning the dishwasher.

Blockages accumulate in the filter itself and in the mesh located underneath it.

Failure of the heating element

This reason causes error 09 in a Bosch dishwasher in 90% of cases. Most often, the heating element of a machine becomes unusable due to hard water. Over time, scale forms on it, the element cannot quickly heat the liquid, experiences constant overloads during operation and ultimately burns out.

The heating element of a Bosch dishwasher is susceptible to breakdowns due to unstable voltage in the network

Some tips for further use.

To avoid encountering error e09 in the future, you should follow these simple rules when using a dishwasher:

  • periodically check the condition of gaskets, seals, hoses and pipes, timely replace worn ones to avoid leaks;
  • Regularly clean and rinse the filter mesh to remove debris, mucus and food debris, avoid clogging and fluid stagnation;
  • use products to soften water and prevent scale formation;
  • in case of frequent power surges, install a stabilizer to prevent failure of the control module;
  • use the services of a qualified specialist to properly connect the installed dishwasher to the household electrical network.

These tips will help extend the life of your home appliance and minimize the risk of breakdowns with subsequent expensive repairs to dishwashers.

Causes of electric heater failure

There are not many reasons why code E09 occurs. Among them:

  1. Water leak. Liquid enters the electric heater due to a leak. Typically, liquid enters the heating element through a rubber seal located between the machine body and the filter bowl. When the seal and gasket wear out, a leak may occur.
  2. Drain filter clogged. The filter needs to be cleaned periodically. This will protect the device from breakdowns and prevent errors from occurring in the future. If there is a blockage, water is poured into the container slowly. Due to the long wait, the electric heater overheats and stops working at full capacity. To solve this problem, open the door from the bunker. At the bottom they find a filter mesh. It is taken out and washed with running water. No matter how thoroughly the dishes are cleaned after eating, small pieces of food still remain on the plate, which inevitably leads to clogging.
  3. Scale. If there is little salt in the ion exchanger, then the liquid entering the device is hard. Heating such water leads to the formation of scale on the heating element. The greater the deposit, the longer it takes for the water to heat up. To avoid this problem, you should use salt. It will soften the water and prevent scale formation.
  4. Malfunction of the wiring and breakdown of the temperature sensor occurs due to unstable operation of the electrical network. To prevent this problem from occurring, install a voltage stabilizer and connect the dishwasher to it. If this is not done, the module responsible for control will burn out.

Error code E09 occurs when a short circuit occurs when liquid gets on the contacts.

DIY electric heater replacement

The heating element, with the recommended skills, can be replaced independently. For repairs you will need the following tools:

  • new working part,
  • multimeter,
  • crosshead screwdriver.

As mentioned above, the water heater in dishwashers is connected to a circulation unit. To remove it from the machine, you need to completely disassemble the device and replace the damaged part with a new one.

The Bosch machine is connected not only to the water supply, but also to the sewerage system and electricity. First, the household appliance is disconnected from all communications.

At the next stage, the front part of the unit is removed. To do this, unscrew the plastic clips. They are located at the edges of the machine body. Disconnect the metal panel located under the door of the device.

Afterwards the thermal insulation is removed. Disconnect the screws that support the tray. Open the dishwasher door and remove the basket intended for dishes. The sprinkler located below is removed. Unscrew the drain filter. Remove the metal mesh located at the bottom of the dishwasher.

The screws located on the side of the hopper and fixing the recirculation unit are removed. Place a large cloth behind the dishwasher that absorbs water well. The household appliance is placed on the back. The filling pipe is disconnected from the recirculation unit. Remove the pallet. The drain pump is turned clockwise and disconnected. The circulation block is removed from the mounts.

The drain hose from the machine is removed and the unit is removed to the outside, after removing the chips with wires. The clamp connecting the heating element to the circulation pump is removed. They take out a new part and install it in place of the damaged one. At the same time, screw in all the chips. The dishwasher parts are installed in place. If you doubt the serviceability of the heating element, use a multimeter to determine the contact resistance.

How to fix error E09 in a Bosch dishwasher

If an error occurs, do not immediately disassemble the dishwasher and change the heater. First, it’s worth checking whether the E09 malfunction is caused by minor problems in the kitchen machine.

How to fix a system crash

The first step in case of error E09 is to make sure that it is not caused by a simple system failure. To do this you need:

  • turn off the dishwasher using the button on the panel;
  • remove the plug from the socket;
  • wait about 15 minutes;
  • Connect the dishwasher back and put it back into operation.

If E09 does not reoccur in the car, the problem can be considered resolved.

Sometimes a system failure is a harbinger of an imminent breakdown, but sometimes it is completely random

How to clean the drain filter

If the error cannot be resolved by simply rebooting, you should check the condition of the drain filter. In Bosch dishwashers it is located at the bottom of the hopper. To access it, you need to open the device, remove the dish basket and pull the element out of the special slot. In some dishwasher models you need to turn it from right to left, in others you just need to pull it towards you.

The drainage filter of the machine is washed under the tap with soap or gel. If necessary, you can use an old toothbrush to remove plaque and grease from the mesh cells. After this, the parts are allowed to dry a little on a towel and placed back in the nest. If error E09 in the dishwasher was caused by a slow flow of water into the hopper and an overload of the heating element, the problem may disappear after cleaning.

To prevent the filter from becoming clogged, it is advisable to rinse the dishes before loading them into the machine.

How to replace the heater in a dishwasher

If rebooting and cleaning the filter did not produce results, and error E09 in the Bosch dishwasher continues to appear at the end of the cycle, all that remains is to disassemble the machine and replace the heating element. It should be noted that purchasing a new part can be quite expensive. In Bosch dishwashers, the element cannot be removed and reinstalled separately; the entire heating block will have to be replaced.

The installation algorithm for a new heating element is as follows:

  1. The dishwasher is completely disconnected from communications - sewerage, water supply, electricity.
  2. The plastic clips are disconnected along the edges of the unit body, and then the front cover is unscrewed and removed. The metal strip and thermal insulation are removed under the door.
  3. The screws are unscrewed along the perimeter of the machine tray, after which the hopper is opened and the baskets are removed from it, and the rocker is also removed from its seat. Remove the filter and the mesh located underneath it from the bottom.
  4. Next you need to unscrew the four screws holding the circulation pump. It is to this that the heater is attached in Bosch dishwashers. Having placed a towel, the unit is turned over onto the back wall, the fasteners around the perimeter are unscrewed and the tray is completely removed.

Access to the machine's circulation pump is completely open. At this stage, it is necessary to disconnect the wires suitable for it from the drain pump, unscrew the screws, and then turn the part from left to right and pull it out of the socket. All cables, pipes and hoses holding it in the dishwasher are disconnected from the pump and removed from the remains of the machine body.

There is no point in repairing the heating block; repairs will be expensive and may not have any effect.

Then all that remains is to loosen and remove the clamp securing the heating block to the pump, and freely remove the heating element. A new one is immediately installed in place of the faulty element, after which the dishwasher is reassembled in the reverse order.
