The best 2.1 speakers in 2021: a review of inexpensive models that you can safely (not) buy

Top Pick: Thonet & Vander Dass BT

We won’t bore you with all the delights of searching and communicating with consultants of electronic discounters; let’s get straight to the result. So, Thonet & Vander Dass BT is a 2.1 format system made entirely of MDF. Total power - 60 W RMS (satellites 2x15 W, subwoofer - 30 W). And yes, this is not Germany, as the box and stickers try their best to convince us - it was made in China. The design is strict, one might even say deliberately grotesque, but this is a huge plus if you look at its colorful and cheap-looking competitors. By the way, the speakers cost around 5,000 rubles. We got it for 4799 rubles

If you are looking for the 2.1 format because it has a separate sub, then Thonet & Vander Dass BT is what you need, don’t even hesitate. The low end here is as good as chicken soup with a hangover. Another small but plus is that the speakers are very light. One of the downsides is that switching from Bluetooth to wire is done only from the remote control, and even then only if you point it correctly (see the “Settings” section)

The kit includes instructions, a remote control, and an RCA cable for connecting to a 3.5 mm jack interface.

What else we liked about the model - it’s an ideal housing for a subwoofer, and not like a miditower. We recommend, at a minimum, to thoroughly check the sound of low frequencies in models where the subwoofer is similar to the system unit. As a rule, the bass there is boomy and clearly lacks depth. As for the overall sound of the Thonet & Vander Dass BT, it is ideal, the only thing is that at high volumes it is better to cut off the high frequencies, otherwise your ears may bleed, but this is a matter of adjusting the equalizer - you can turn up the Treble on the subwoofer

There is definitely enough sound to flex in your apartment. But testing the speakers in nature gave an excellent result - the power is definitely enough to organize a rural disco right in your dacha. Naturally, the video will not be able to convey the entire palette of sound and excellent quality vibe

Setting up Thonet & Vander Dass BT

When you turn on the speakers, the blue indicator blinks for ~30 seconds. This means that it is looking for a device to pair (if you have already connected to the speakers from the device before, the system will connect them automatically). All you need to do is turn on bluetooth on the device from which you want to play music and find T&V DASS in the list of devices. On a laptop (Windows 10), bring up the context menu of the bluetooth icon (right-click) and select "Add device"

In the window that opens, click the button of the same name “Add bluetooth or other device”

To finally get to us, Windows will once again ask what we want to add:

Connecting to the speakers

Remember that the speaker searches for devices only for the first ~30 seconds after switching on, while the blue LED is blinking

If the speakers do not find the device, they will automatically switch the signal source to AUX (the yellow indicator will light up). If you initially need a wired connection and don’t want to wait, you can use the remote control to switch the source with the INPUT button. Please note that the “window” for receiving a signal on the speakers is at the bottom, so control from the remote control may not seem very convenient, especially since Bluetooth remote controls are very capricious in terms of

How to properly connect speakers to a computer?

It would seem that at this point no questions should arise. But sometimes, when purchasing particularly complex models, you have to work hard to connect everything correctly.

What to pay attention to:

  1. Make sure that the PC sound card is suitable for working with this model. This information can be found in the documentation or specified upon purchase.
  2. The connectors on the speakers have different colors and must match the colors of the computer's sound card.
  3. Under each connector there are indications with the purpose (several letters are indicated). And the connectors themselves are called RCA or “Tulip” type sockets.
  4. To connect, you will need an adapter from RCA to miniJack 3.5 mm (AUX).
  5. One end of the adapter is plugged into the computer socket, the other into the speaker socket.
  6. Check the polarities before connecting so as not to spoil the sound of the audio system ahead of time.
  7. Next, you can turn on the computer, wait for the operating system to fully load and start the audio system.
  8. Customize the sound settings the way you like.

The main thing is to carefully read the instructions, which should always be included in the kit.

Why doesn't my laptop see the speakers?

You can address this and other questions on computer electronics to the special section of Vamber - https://vamber.ru/question-category/kompyuteryi-elektronika-it/. By the way, by answering users’ questions there, you earn money yourself. Yes, yes, that notorious passive income on the Internet, but only with your mind. If your laptop cannot be seen by any device at all, then check whether Bluetooth is allowed on Windows 10. On the laptop (Windows 10), call the context menu of the bluetooth icon (right-click) and select “Add device”. In the window that opens, scroll down to the “Other Bluetooth settings” link

In the new window, check the boxes

In our case, only the Acer Extensa EX2519 laptop did not see the speakers (phones were connected). The only thing that helped was reinstalling the drivers for the bluetooth adapter. So, if Thonet & Vander do not see your laptop, but still cling to the phone, reinstall the driver (the model can be viewed in the device manager)

Good choice: SVEN MS-304

Another speaker that we liked is SVEN MS-304. The speaker housing is made of MDF, the total power is 40 W.

It is assembled with high quality, there are no complaints about the layout. There is a connector for USB and SD cards, plus an FM tuner. Everything works, turns on and off.

The Mode button is responsible for selecting the audio source - PC, USB or Bluetooth. If the indicator blinks when switching to Bluetooth, it means the speakers are waiting to connect to some device:

The volume is adjusted using the central button:

SmartBuy Sparta

  • Total power: 12 W / subwoofer 8 W, speakers 2 W
  • Frequency range: 100 to 20,000 Hz
  • Speakers: single-way
  • Connections and connectors: USB-A, 3.5 mm, card reader
  • Remote: no
  • Housing material: subwoofer and speakers - MDF
  • Package size: 17 × 24 × 14 cm
  • Total weight: 1.4 kg
  • Power: 220 V, 50 Hz

And in the ultra-budget category there are very decent stereo speakers, for example SmartBuy Sparta. Their name speaks for itself. These are strict, square boxes with universal capabilities and a dazzlingly bright indicator. The acoustics have a linear input, radio, and support flash drives. And the minimum size does not prevent them from producing decent and loud sound. Its quality does not cause any complaints over the entire frequency and power range. If such words can be applied to 12 W speakers. Therefore, the bass sound is mediocre, in general they sound a bit muffled, but quite acceptable for their price tag. In standby mode there is a slight buzz, but the background is barely audible and is not particularly annoying. The same cannot be said about the volume control on the back side, which greatly complicates the experience of use, because... even a wired control panel in this budget will be an unaffordable luxury. But the body is entirely made of MDF. In principle, it seems to me that the SmartBuy Sparta audio system will appeal to unspoiled music lovers and will be very useful if you urgently need something cheap, or if you suddenly need any temporary replacement for the main acoustics that were sent for repair.

pros

The sound is sufficient for one room, the lows are not as dense as we would like (written down as a minus), but overall the sound is quite high quality

The remote control has a good coverage area and “hits” the speakers much better than the same Thonet & Vander Dass BT.

The design of the speakers is quite stylish - black and red contrast very well.

There are no time limits when switching to Bleutooth (as, again, with Thonet & Vander) - the speakers will wait as long as you like until you connect from your phone or laptop.

Minuses

Don't expect any miracles from a subwoofer in a “computer” case. At volumes above average, an unpleasant “fart” already appears. Listening to rock/metal/alternative music on them is not very pleasant (pop, deep, drum and bass are the norm)

After turning off the speakers from the network (out of the socket), synchronization with the laptop gets lost (we assume that the problem is only with our specific laptop). You have to constantly turn it off and on - after that the adapter instantly finds the speakers.

There are not very reliable, thin wires going to the satellites - be careful when transporting them. This model has only bass adjustments - no mids or highs.

Edifier S360DB

With Edifier we are already introducing “big words”. This 2.1 speaker system is not a gaming speaker per se, but given its specifications, it will certainly provide excellent gaming performance. They have two satellites that include midrange drivers and flat-diaphragm tweeters for crisper highs. At the same time, they have an 8-inch subwoofer that delivers 360W RMS power throughout the system, compatible with Bluetooth 4.1 aptX and wireless remote control.

They stand out with their MDF wooden box, which minimizes resonance and delivers cleaner sound with the added quality and aesthetics it provides.

Which models did not impress us (2.0 and 2.1)

Defender G50 (~5200 RUR)

Let's be honest, initially this model was considered for purchase. Her reviews were more than neutral. But, as we already wrote at the beginning of the article, the subwoofer ruined everything. By the way, when checking, the mechanized female voice did not report a change in source (there is a lot of swearing in the reviews about this feature). Perhaps the bug has already been fixed, but for some reason this doesn’t make it any easier.

Why we decided to refuse: the low frequencies for 5k could have been better. Can't compare with Thonet & Vander Dass BT. The only plus of the Defender is the built-in FM receiver (who really needs it if you can turn on the radio from your phone, for example)

SVEN SPS-619 (~2500 RUR)

The SVEN company has very conflicting reviews when it comes to speakers for home use. To be fair, such reviews fall into the category “the grass was greener before” (SVEN used to really make better acoustics), so we tried to listen to the SVEN SPS-619. But no. Apparently it really was greener. SVEN SPS-619 sound terrible. It’s better to add a little and pay attention to SVEN MS-304 described above

Why we decided to refuse: you can just as easily listen to music from a laptop speaker. Absolutely fresh sound without a hint of low frequencies. However, the presence of a Treble knob, but the absence of a bass control already says a lot.

Ginzzu GM-301, GM-302 (~7000 RUR)

We found this brand on OZON and their products seemed interesting to us, and this model claims as much as 90 watts of sound. We'd love to hear your feedback on these speakers if you've purchased them. We did not take risks, because... It is not possible to listen to them live in stores in our city.

Why they decided to give up: no trust in the brand - dead VK group (last post from March 2021, no one answers user questions), too many completely unnecessary whistle-blowing gadgets that have almost nothing to do with sound quality: FM module, microphone connectors (karaoke), SD cards, etc. But it should be noted that not only a specific model and a specific brand suffer from this

Do they also take a long time to respond to comments on Youtube?
