How to choose a geyser coffee maker - TOP 12 best models and selection criteria

An alternative to coffee machines, carob and drip coffee makers can be a good geyser coffee maker. It is easy to use and its cost is significantly lower. Unlike the Turks, there is no need to constantly monitor the boiling water. Coffee brewed in such a coffee maker has a rich taste and aroma, and there is no grounds in the cup. Manufacturers offer two types of geyser coffee makers: for preparing a drink on the stove and electric ones that operate from the network. Andrey Bogapov, a coffee lover and simply a good person, helped compile the rating of the best models.

What is a geyser coffee maker and how does it work?

The body of the geyser coffee maker consists of a lower and upper part, screwed onto each other. The lower part acts as a reservoir for water; the number of cups that can be prepared in one approach depends on its volume. After pouring water, a coffee filter is inserted into the lower part, into which coffee is poured. The coffee filter is a structural part of the coffee maker and is not replaceable. The top part is screwed on top and the coffee maker is put on fire or turned on.

The operating principle of the coffee maker is based on natural steam pressure. When water boils, steam is formed which, rising upward, squeezes the water into the upper compartment. The water is saturated with coffee, passing through a coffee filter, and a ready-made aromatic drink enters the upper part.

Material of manufacture

Some people are wary of cooking in aluminum cookware. However, modern health standards only require that you avoid storing prepared foods in aluminum containers. At the same time, manufacturers, as a rule, offer a range of models made from high-quality 18/10 stainless steel. Such coffee makers are easier to clean, but we must not forget that steel conducts heat much better and the dishes will always be scalding hot. In addition, steel geysers are somewhat more expensive. There are also quite exotic options - in them the upper part is made of porcelain or transparent heat-resistant polycarbonate.

Is a geyser or drip coffee maker better?

These are two different coffee makers that make different drinks. There is a large jug in the drip, and you can only cook Americano. And espresso is prepared in the geyser room. You can dilute espresso with hot water and get an Americano.

The good thing about drip is that it doesn’t require any precision. There is no need to carefully pour the coffee into a small filter. But this is a very dubious plus.

How to choose a geyser coffee maker

Buyers often wonder how to choose a good geyser coffee maker.
When purchasing, you must first focus on the type of stove. For induction cookers, the lower part of the device must be made of steel. Any material is suitable for electric and gas stoves, including aluminum. For gas stoves, it is not recommended to purchase painted models, since under the influence of open fire the paint may lose its presentation. Steel coffee makers are somewhat more expensive, but they are easier to clean (can be washed in dishwashers). Aluminum coffee makers are available in a wider range of models, but they do not work with induction cooktops and must be washed by hand.

If we compare an electric geyser and a drip geyser of the same price category, then the first will produce a smaller volume of coffee, but at the same time the coffee will be richer and more aromatic. There is more coffee in drip.

Volume

Everything is simple here, if you are going to drink coffee alone, then a coffee maker for 1-2 cups will suit you. If there are 3 coffee lovers in the family, then choose a coffee maker for 4-9 servings.

Please note that in Russia they do not often drink small espresso in one sip. Therefore, if you have 2 coffee lovers in your family, then it is better to buy a coffee maker for at least 4 servings.

Should you overpay for the brand or take an inexpensive Chinese one?

By purchasing a branded coffee maker, you get a quality product that prepares espresso according to all the rules. Durability and reliability also depend on the price. It would seem, what is there to break? In inexpensive ones, the filter membrane quickly cracks, which is problematic to buy. All threads, fastenings, valves are made much more reliably on a branded coffee maker.

Selection rules

As with any other household appliance, before purchasing it is important to familiarize yourself with the basic selection criteria :

  1. Volume. Depends on the number of people living in the house. Manufacturers produce coffee makers that can prepare from 1 to 18 cups of aromatic drink.
  2. Electric, gas, induction. The choice depends on personal preference.
  3. Execution material. There are aluminum, ceramic, tempered glass, stainless steel or polymers. Aluminum ones are affordable. Ceramic ones are suitable for an electric or gas stove. More practical - made of stainless steel or polymers.
  4. Power or cooking speed. Modern models have power from 400 to 1500 W. The larger the family, the higher the power should be. For example, for two people 500 W will be enough.
  5. The non-stick coating will make it easier to care for the coffee maker, and the nylon or wood handle will eliminate the risk of burns.
  6. Additional functionality. Automatic shutdown, heating of coffee, adjusting the strength and even connecting to a Wi-Fi network. Some models are equipped with a compartment for storing cord, filters, brushes and spoons.
  7. Brand awareness. Coffee makers from a popular manufacturer are more expensive, but at the same time you get a guarantee of quality.

For example, the classic Bialetti Moka Express is still made in Italy, but as of this writing, most stainless steel Bialetti models are now made in India and Romania, and some of the GAT models are made in China. If the country of production is important to you, then be sure to clarify this point when choosing and purchasing. Please note that production in other countries is always carried out under the control of brand specialists, and therefore ultimately does not affect the quality of the products.
