Rating of the best ultrasonic electric brushes

From this article you will learn:

  • which electric toothbrush is better,
  • is it worth buying, rating 2021,
  • rating of electric toothbrushes.

The article was written by a dentist with more than 19 years of experience.

An electric toothbrush is a modern teeth-cleaning device whose head with bristles is driven by an electric motor built inside. All electric toothbrushes can be divided into 2 main types. The first, most popular version of such devices is the Oral-B electric toothbrush, in which the head with bristles makes reciprocating rotational circular as well as vertical pulsating movements (Fig. 1).

The second type is sonic or ultrasonic toothbrushes. With such devices, it will not be the head of the toothbrush that moves (it remains stationary), but the tips of the bristles themselves will vibrate. For example, sonic brushes (Fig. 2) have bristles that oscillate at a frequency of 30,000 to 60,000 movements per minute, and you just need to move such a brush along the dentition without making the usual reciprocating or sweeping movements.

Best Electric Toothbrushes –

Ultrasonic brushes (Fig. 3) - in addition to an electric motor, they also have a special piezoceramic plate that generates an ultrasonic vibration wave of 1.6-1.7 MHz. These waves are transmitted to the bristles, causing their tips to vibrate at a frequency of at least 100,000,000 movements per minute. Why this is needed - you can read at the link above. However, the Oral-B electric toothbrush (according to most dentists, including the author of the article) is the best option, which we will discuss in detail in this review.

Pros of the Oral-B electric toothbrush –

Do you need an electric toothbrush - the reviews will certainly please you, and if you still doubt it, then be sure that no matter what option you choose (Oral-B, sonic or ultrasonic brush) - any of them will allow you to increase your teeth several times. the quality of your oral hygiene. Advertising for Oral-B brushes claims that their device allows you to remove plaque - at least 2 times more when compared with regular toothbrushes. And it is true.

But the Philips company, in an advertisement for its Philips Sonicare sonic brushes, says that their brushes remove up to 10 times more plaque. This is definitely marketing, which has nothing to do with reality. Let's put it this way: Philips Sonicare does its job almost as well as Oral-B electric toothbrushes (especially at first), but there are some important nuances. In total, I have 15 years of experience using different types of electric toothbrushes, and I will talk about my experience below.

Electric brush Oral-B author of the article –

Comparison of different types of brushes

When you buy Oral-B, you not only get a superior feeling of clean teeth that you can't get with a regular manual toothbrush. This brush will safely serve you for 5-10 years (I threw away my first Oral-B brush after 5-6 years simply because I got tired of it), and you will only have to change the attachments once every 2 months. Right away, I was not able to fully appreciate the benefits of my first electric toothbrush, because... I have not yet used alternatives - sound and ultrasonic options. For example, the motor of Oral-B brushes does not lose power; they have a reliable, long-lasting rechargeable battery (and it will definitely not die on you even in 3-4 years).

But the main disadvantage of sonic toothbrushes is the increasing loss of power, which is expressed in a decrease in the amplitude of movement of the bristles (this can happen after just a few months of use). Most reviews boil down to the fact that the maximum service life of such brushes is only 2 years, and most devices break down almost immediately after the warranty expires - this is especially true for the latest generations of sonic brushes. I only used my sonic brush for a few months, because... I noticed that plaque from tea and coffee began to form between my teeth (which did not happen while I was using Oral-B).

Well, another big, big plus of brushes with a rotating head with bristles is that the head of the Oral-B brushes is small enough, and therefore, by turning the handle in different directions, you can make the bristles along the edges of the head penetrate deeply into the interdental spaces (polishing the surfaces of the teeth even in interdental spaces). Therefore, I quite rarely have to go to my colleagues for professional ultrasonic teeth cleaning, probably no more than once every 2-3 years. In essence, an Oral-B brush is an analogue of a dentist’s tool, when your teeth are polished in the dental chair with rotating attachments with bristles and an abrasive polishing paste.

3D plaque removal technology from Oral-B –

The first electric toothbrushes only had 2D cleaning technology, i.e. they performed only reciprocating and rotating movements in a circle. This technology is still used now, but only in the most budget models, as well as in children's electric brushes (for young children). Modern electric toothbrushes for teenagers and adults use 3D technology, where the head with bristles makes not only reciprocating and rotating movements, but also pulsating ones.

Depending on the class of the brush, reciprocating movements can be 7600, 8800 and up to 10,500 per minute, and vertical pulsations can be 20,000, 40,000 or 48,000 per minute. Pulsating movements allow you to loosen tightly attached microbial and pigment plaque, facilitating its removal with rotational movements. In addition, pulsating movements allow the bristles to penetrate deeper into the interdental spaces, better removing microbial plaque and food debris from there. Moreover, the intersecting bristles of the CrossAction nozzles penetrate especially deeply into the interdental spaces (standard PrecisionClean nozzles are somewhat worse).

Therefore, if you like strong tea or coffee, this brush will allow your teeth to be much whiter. For people with a high rate of formation of soft microbial plaque, as well as hard tartar, an electric toothbrush with 3D technology will significantly reduce the amount of hard dental plaque (24stoma.ru). This effect will be especially noticeable if during brushing you use toothpastes with pyrophosphates, which dissolve the tartar matrix.

Oral-B electric brush (how to choose) –

This article is not an advertisement, and as a dentist and the author of the article, I am not going to encourage you to buy expensive brush models.
My first electric toothbrush, Oral-B Professional care 500 (short name “Oral-B PRO 500”), was bought by me many years ago... see photo below. I already said above that I refused it out of fatigue, because... I just got tired of it and wanted something new. I took it apart and saw that it was possible to replace the battery. Now brushes in this series cost from 2,700 rubles on sale (on average 3,500 rubles). For the last 3 years I have been using the Oral-B Genius 9000 toothbrush (see photo below), which at the time of purchase cost 18,000 rubles, and now you can buy it from 9,000 to 12,000 rubles, depending on the configuration. There is no particular difference in the quality of teeth cleaning, and out of all 6 cleaning modes, I mainly use only one. And of course, now I don’t see the point in buying such an expensive toothbrush, well, only if you decide to give someone a status gift. You can see a couple of brushes I bought below (and even lower there will be video reviews of them).

Oral-B brushes “PRO 500” and “Genius 9000” series –

Let me just point out that the “Genius 9000” brush is not on my original charger (it’s more compact and convenient). But now about how to make the right choice, i.e. buy an electric toothbrush that you will be satisfied with. Their main differences are the different number of reciprocating and pulsating movements per minute, the type of power source, the number of operating modes, as well as the presence in the kit of a different number of attachments + a large number of less useful/useless devices.

The latter includes a case with USB charging, Bluetooth, a special application for a smartphone, as well as a special holder for a smartphone that allows you to attach your phone to the mirror in the bathroom (so that the phone can watch you brush your teeth). All these devices are the essence of marketing, i.e. the task of justifying the higher cost in your eyes.

Criteria for choosing electric brushes –

  • Type of power source - it can be a rechargeable battery or AA batteries. We recommend buying electric toothbrushes only with rechargeable batteries (for this purpose, Oral-B brushes come with special chargers, on which the brush is also perfectly fixed in a vertical position). Cordless brushes have much higher rotational power, which means their cleaning ability will be better.
  • The nature of the movements of the brush head - the simplest electric toothbrushes work using 2D technology, making only reciprocating rotational movements without pulsations. These brushes include the Oral-B Vitality series, and they perform 7600 reciprocating movements per minute. To effectively remove not only microbial, but also pigmented plaque, 3D technology is needed (i.e., a combination of reciprocating and pulsating movements). Different brush models may have different rates of these movements.
For example, most budget electric toothbrushes of the Oral-B PRO series perform 8,800 reciprocating and 20,000 pulsating movements. But more expensive models, for example, “Oral-B PRO 3000”, “Oral-B Smart-4 4000N”, “Oral-B Genius 9000” - differ from the penultimate ones only in that there will be already 40,000 pulsating movements. Premium models (for example, the Oral-B Smart-6 6000N toothbrush) - will already perform 10,500 reciprocating and 48,000 pulsating movements.

In fact, such a difference in performance is insignificant (you won’t even notice the difference in the quality of cleaning), and brushes with a number of movements of 8800/20,000 will be quite enough for you. An increased number of pulsations can be recommended for lovers of nicotine or strong tea, because... pulsations help loosen pigment plaque.

  • Cleaning modes – any Oral-B electric toothbrush will have at least 1 standard “Daily Cleaning” mode, and by and large this mode is quite enough to effectively care for your teeth. In our opinion, the other modes are more of a marketing ploy to sell more expensive models. More expensive models may have the following modes:
→ “Professional cleaning” (with an increased number of pulsating movements), and in some models this mode may already be called “Deep cleaning”, → “For sensitive teeth” (without pulsating movements), which in some models may be called “Gentle” cleaning", → "Gum care" (gum massage), → "Cleaning the tongue", → "Whitening".

Important: the “Daily Cleaning” mode may be different in different Oral-B models. In most models, this is by default 8800 reciprocating and 20,000 pulsating movements. But in several models of Oral-B brushes, the “Daily Cleaning” mode is 8,800 reciprocating and 40,000 pulsating movements (without the ability to select a mode with 20,000 pulsations), and we do not recommend buying such brushes. And below we will tell you what this is connected with.

  • Brush Head Options – Oral-B's main brush heads for daily brushing include the Cross-Action brush head and the Precision-Clean brush head. The first type of attachments can be considered the best, because... Cross bristles better loosen plaque and also better remove it from the interdental spaces. In addition, I noticed that 1 Cross-Action nozzle lasts longer than 1 Precision-Clean nozzle (the latter wear out a little faster).
Replacement brush heads for Oral-b: photo

In total, there are 8 options for Oral-B replacement heads (including for sensitive teeth, whitening, floss-active and others - read more at this link). More expensive models initially come with a whole set of different attachments. Inexpensive models usually have only 1 nozzle included, but the rest can be purchased. All attachments are produced with special multi-colored rings so that members of the same family do not confuse them.

  • Control and safety - some models of toothbrushes control the force of pressure of the working head on the teeth (to prevent increased tooth abrasion), i.e. This is no longer just an electric toothbrush, but the smartest electronic toothbrush. It has a sensor that controls the force of pressing the brush on the teeth, as well as a timer that shows how long each segment of the dentition needs to be brushed. But in fact, all of these are also of little use devices that may seem important only to buyers of the very first electric toothbrush.

Low-budget models of Oral-B electric brushes –

The following toothbrushes cannot be called budget, but their price is based on the fact that they already have smart technology. For example, such brushes can be synchronized with a special Oral-B application via Bluetooth, or this application, using a video camera on your phone, can analyze your brushing process and give you recommendations.

Oral-B PRO “Smart Series” toothbrushes –

There are 3 main options in the “Oral-B PRO Smart Series” line of toothbrushes – the “Smart-4 4000N”, “Smart-5 5000N”, “Smart-6 6000N” series. Toothbrush “Oral-B PRO Smart-4 4000N” - I bought it for my girlfriend, etc. I was given a replacement nozzle - I also had a chance to use it. And it was a real nightmare, the cost of which at the moment will be about 7,000 rubles.

Toothbrush “Oral-B PRO Smart-4 4000N” –

The Oral-B PRO Smart 4 4000N toothbrush has a main “Daily Cleaning” mode, which has 8,800 rotational and 40,000 pulsating movements (it does not have a mode with 20,000 pulsations). It has such strong vibration that brushing your teeth in this mode all the time is very unpleasant, as if you were using a construction hammer. Its two other modes “Care for gums” and “For sensitive teeth” are not applicable for normal daily brushing of teeth.

An important point that I drew attention to: the Oral-B PRO Smart-4 brush with its 40,000 pulsations has a significantly higher vibration sensation than the Oral-B Genius 9000 brush in the “Professional Cleaning” mode (in this mode also 40,000 pulsations). Apparently there is a significant difference precisely in the increased amplitude of pulsating movements - which is why “Oral-B PRO Smart-4” apparently wants to be compared with the work of a construction hammer.

Important: here again I want to draw your attention to the fact that the “Daily Cleaning” mode is not the same for different Oral-B brushes. Buy only those versions of Oral-B brushes where in the “Daily Cleaning” mode the number of pulsating movements will be 20,000, no more! At the same time, the brush may have a “Professional Cleaning” mode, in which there will be 40,000 or 48,000 pulsating movements, if you need to periodically break up tightly attached pigmented and microbial plaque. All versions of the “Oral-B PRO Smart” brushes of series 4 and 5 – in the “Daily Cleaning” mode give exactly 40,000 pulsations with terrible vibration.

Video review of the Oral-B PRO Smart 4 4000N

Conclusions: the brushes of the “Oral-B PRO Smart 4 4000N” and “Oral-B PRO Smart 5 5000N” series do not differ from each other in anything except the configuration (unnecessary devices appear in the Smart-5 series). But the brushes of the “Oral-B PRO Smart 6 6000N” series - in the “Daily Cleaning” mode give only 20,000 pulsations, and only in the “Professional Cleaning” mode – already 48,000 pulsations. Thus, you can safely buy a brush from the Smart-6 series, but its price on Ozon will start from 10,300 rubles.

Oral-B Genius Toothbrushes –

There are many series in the Oral-B Genius line of toothbrushes - 8000, 9000, 10,000, 20,000. In principle, almost all of them have the same functionality, and their cost will average from 10,000 to 13,000 rubles. For the last few years, I have been using the Oral-B Genius 9000 toothbrush, which has already been discontinued, but you can still buy it in online stores. Just don’t be confused by the fact that I use a charger with a holder for attachments that is not included in the kit (it’s more compact; left over from a previous toothbrush).

My Oral-B Genius 9000 brush –

Oral-B Genius 9000 performs 8,800 reciprocating and 20,000 pulsating movements in the “Daily Cleaning” mode, as well as 8,800/40,000 in the “Professional Cleaning” mode. And, by the way, in the 40,000 pulsation mode it vibrates quite softly - in comparison with the Oral-B PRO Smart 4 4000N. It should be noted that at the moment, all toothbrushes of the “Oral-B Genius” series are produced with slightly different characteristics: in the “Daily Cleaning” mode – 8800/20,000 movements, “Professional Cleaning” – already 10,500/48,000 movements. There is NO particular point in such an even greater number of movements, and all this is just marketing (for sales it is important that in new generations of brushes all indicators are “higher and stronger”).

Oral-B Genius brushes have a full range of cleaning modes, including “for sensitive teeth”, “whitening”, “gum care”, but some models may not have a “tongue cleaning” mode. The kit contains a carrying case (with a built-in USB charger), but it is very heavy and therefore it is better to take a regular charger when traveling. You can also throw away the smartphone holder. The brush itself is excellent, although I only use 2 of the 6 modes.

Electric toothbrush Oral-B Vitality 100 –

The Oral-B Vitality series of toothbrushes is the most inexpensive and modest in functionality. These brushes perform only 7600 reciprocating movements per minute (no pulsation). In principle, these characteristics correspond to Oral-B children's toothbrushes, intended for children over 3 years old, but not for adults. Let us remind you that pulsating movements allow you to loosen pigmented and partially mineralized microbial plaque, facilitating its removal with rotational movements.

Oral-B Vitality 100 (with CrossAction attachment) –

Its cost is only 1,500 rubles. In addition, the Oral-B Vitality 100 electric toothbrush is powered by a built-in rechargeable battery (has a charger included), has 1 operating mode “Daily Cleaning”, as well as 1 brush head included. In general, this brush can be recommended for ages up to 10-12 years, no more. But nevertheless, even it will certainly be more effective in removing plaque - compared to a regular manual toothbrush.

The toothbrush is packaged in a cardboard box, which also contains a brush head, charger (cord length 120 centimeters) and instructions. The nozzle is placed in a transparent plastic package. And the charger is packaged in parts in separate boxes.

Appearance

Let's look at the toothbrush from different angles. For comparison, I took a photo of a toothbrush next to a regular handle.

Due to the soft polymer coating, the toothbrush does not slip out of your hands. To prevent sliding on the surface, there are two rubber protrusions on the handle, larger on top and smaller on bottom. It seems like a small thing, but because of these protrusions, the brush is really securely fixed to the surface. The lower part is made of white plastic.

Functions and Features

The button is located in the middle, where it is very convenient to press with your thumb. One click and the toothbrush starts its work. After the second press, the toothbrush stops.

I would like to note the weight of this device, which should please adults, but rather the opposite for children. There is a nickel-metal hydride battery installed inside the toothbrush, which is why the weight is felt. A full charge of the toothbrush takes 16 hours. If you brush twice a day for two minutes, the toothbrush will last about a week. While eating, the toothbrush does not work.

There is nothing written on the packaging about the stiffness of the bristles. But it feels like it is of medium hardness. The bristles differ in color, size and angle of inclination. The bristles are angled for better cleaning and faster removal of plaque.

The length of the charger (power cord) is 120 centimeters, which is quite enough. The fork is soft and comfortable. The charger itself is made of plastic. The toothbrush is not fixed on it as clearly as we would like.

The brush is waterproof, in theory no moisture should get inside. When turned on, the brush begins to vibrate slightly in your hands and makes a fairly loud sound. The motor inside the brush is not weak.

How to use

First you need to wet the nozzle, and then apply toothpaste. Bring the brush to your mouth, and only then turn on the toothbrush. If you turn it on earlier, toothpaste may end up on your face. Cleaning begins from the outside of the teeth. You need to move slowly, without pressing on the brush.

We conditionally divide the oral cavity into four parts, devoting 30 seconds to each part. Every 30 seconds, the toothbrush stops, thus giving a signal that it is time to change the brushing area. After two minutes, the brush will give a double signal and stop. Be sure to read the instructions before use.

Average rating in stores

Looking at the ratings of the toothbrush in large stores, the average rating among stores will be 4.8 out of five stars. Judging by the reviews, we can understand that, for the most part, the owners of this toothbrush were satisfied. It can be purchased on Aliexpress for

Minuses
  • no charging indicator
  • lasts for a week and takes a long time to charge
  • cost of nozzles (not critical, but still)
Adviсe

A few tips to make your brush last longer:

  • Change the nozzle every three months
  • Charge the brush only when necessary
  • Do not immerse in water
  • After brushing your teeth, it is advisable to rinse the brush head, as toothpaste stains can damage the delicate bristles.
Conclusion

The Braun Oral-B Vitality D100.413.1 Cross Action electric toothbrush was a pleasant surprise for its price. This is a good device for everyday use. It is ideal for those who like medium firmness and above. During the entire time of use there were no glitches, and according to reviews they say that it is durable.

Electric toothbrushes: contraindications

So is it worth buying an electric toothbrush? It definitely is. Your hygiene will truly improve and you will immediately feel that your teeth are cleaner and smoother. In addition, the formation of pigment plaque and tartar will occur much more slowly, which is especially significant for smokers and lovers of strong black tea. But are there any restrictions and contraindications for use?

Electric toothbrush - reviews from dentists indicate that it is undesirable to use it, for example, in patients with low-mineralized tooth enamel. Its presence may be indicated by increased tooth wear, multiple wedge-shaped defects, as well as the presence of white chalky spots on the teeth. But if the tooth enamel is well mineralized, then there can be no problems.

The abrasion of tooth enamel depends mainly on 3 components -

  • on the density (degree of mineralization) of tooth enamel,
  • toothpaste abrasiveness (RDA),
  • the degree of stiffness of the bristles of the toothbrush, the applied effort (pressure), as well as the speed of rotation of the head with the bristles.

Therefore, an electric toothbrush requires the use of toothpastes with a slightly lower abrasive coefficient. It is advisable to use pastes where the manufacturer indicates the abrasiveness index of the paste “ RDA ”. With regular use of an electric brush, the RDA index of a toothpaste is optimal in the range from 50 to 75.

However, if you want to remove black plaque from your teeth, then 1-2 times a week you can use a paste with an abrasiveness of about 100-120 units, for example, “Lacalut Whit”. This paste contains a spherical cut abrasive that does not scratch teeth, as well as pyrophosphates that dissolve the matrix of tartar and plaque. Use an electric toothbrush for this - you need either in the “Whitening” or “For sensitive teeth” mode (since high speeds and strong pulsations can be harmful here).

Types of electric brushes

All electric brushes have a similar design. Inside the case there is a motor that is powered by batteries or an accumulator. When you turn on an electric toothbrush, the motor drives a head with bristles that can move up and down.

  • How to properly brush your teeth with ultrasound?

Modern electric brushes, based on their operating principle, are divided into rotary, sonic and ultrasonic. Rotary brushes clean the surface of teeth by rotating, vibrating or pulsating the bristles of the head. Sonic ones provide high quality teeth cleaning due to sound vibrations of a certain frequency. A fine foam saturated with oxygen is formed in the mouth, which helps to better remove plaque and bacteria.

Ultrasonic toothbrushes generate ultrasound from 20 thousand Hz. Such waves are not perceived by the human ear, but have a destructive effect on bacteria, simply preventing them from gaining a foothold on the surface of the teeth.
