How to choose a cordless vacuum cleaner

Philips cordless handheld vacuum cleaners have a number of advantages. They are light, maneuverable, multifunctional. You don’t need to collect them every time before cleaning; a vacuum cleaner is always at hand. They are easy to store, they take up little space, because they are installed on the wall on a special mount combined with a charger. The vacuum cleaner is easy to operate. It is not tied to an outlet, although it does require a long charge.

When choosing a cordless vacuum cleaner, pay attention to the following characteristics:

  • Device power and suction power
  • Battery capacity
  • Operating time on one charge
  • The presence of a turbo mode that allows you to clean contaminated surfaces and animal hair
  • Filter types
  • Multifunctionality (possibility of dry and wet cleaning, work with a disconnected pipe

Description and principle of operation of a cordless vacuum cleaner

Vertical wireless models have different designs. The waste container is located next to the handle or near the brush. Equipped with batteries that operate autonomously for a certain period of time.

Vacuum cleaners require recharging after each use and cleaning the container from collected dust and debris.

Elements for adjusting power are located on the handle. Once turned on, the circulating air stream captures debris, directs it to the filtration system for purification, and then into the container.

If the model includes a wet cleaning function, then it is supplemented with another water tank. After turning on the mode, water is scattered over the surface, then the built-in sponge nozzle wipes it until it shines.

How to choose and what to pay attention to?

The tips are as follows:

  • Execution option . This can be a vertical, manual or combination vacuum cleaner. The company offers standard models, 2 in 1 and 3 in 1 equipment. Here the buyer must start from personal preferences and financial capabilities.
  • Suction power . The higher the indicator, the more perfect the result. The best option is a vacuum cleaner with a suction power of 120 W or more.
  • Battery type . The leader is a lithium ion battery. It has the highest performance and can work offline for a long time.
  • Functionality . Modern technology can connect to a smartphone and function in “smart home” mode. The housing is also equipped with LED lighting and is suitable for vertical parking on a magnetic washer.
  • Complete set . The manufacturer complements the models with a rich set of different attachments. These can be turbo brushes, floor brushes, crevice brushes, rubber rollers, and so on. But some vacuum cleaners are not equipped with additional elements. You will have to purchase them yourself. Therefore, it is important to study the technical specifications and carefully read the list of attachments.

Equipment

This model is packaged in a glossy cardboard box with full color printing. On the front and back, in addition to the Philips SpeedPro logo, we see color photographs of the device itself, a nozzle for wet cleaning (the main feature that distinguishes the FC6728 in the SpeedPro series of vacuum cleaners), as well as illustrations of the capabilities of this model: convenient cleaning of the waste container, manual cleaning ( including the use of an extension tube) and, of course, a nozzle for wet cleaning.

The images on the sides illustrate the richness of the equipment and contain a brief excursion into the structure of the vacuum cleaner (a cutaway image of the motor, the presence of a battery, a diagram of the operation of the filter unit and both attachments).

The main text on the packaging is in English. A brief description of the model and its main features is placed on the top cover of the box in ten languages: Ukrainian, Kazakh, Farsi, Arabic, Thai, Vietnamese, Malay, Chinese, Korean and at the bottom, slightly larger, in Russian.

Inside the box we found:

  • vacuum cleaner body with installed filtration unit;
  • extension tube;
  • vacuum nozzle with electric brush;
  • a nozzle for wet cleaning with a rag holder;
  • two microfiber attachments for wet cleaning;
  • power adapter;
  • bracket for wall storage of vacuum cleaner.

Documentation supplied with the device:

  • user manual in eight languages;
  • illustrated appendix to the manual;
  • copy of the EAC certificate of conformity;
  • brochure with warranty conditions;
  • safety guide.

At first sight

The body of the vacuum cleaner is made of a combination of black and blue (denim color, as the manual specifies) plastic. The material is slightly matte, pleasant to the touch.

The inner side of the moderately thick and comfortable handle has a ribbed notch. On the upper side of the handle there is a control panel for the vacuum cleaner: a power lever and a display.

On the bottom side of the case you can see a round two-pin pad for connecting the magnetic connector of the charger. Air outlet grilles are located at the bottom and sides, with the side grilles half covered by guides that orient the air flow backwards. This is an excellent design decision: most upright vacuum cleaners have air vented to the sides and down, raising light debris and dust during the cleaning process and making it more difficult. SpeedPro Aqua does not have this drawback.

In the front part of the case there is an adapter for connecting an extension tube and nozzles. It is equipped with a three-pin connector for powering the electric brush for dry cleaning and is itself a device for cleaning narrow, inconvenient areas, which, which is valuable, is always at hand.

The vacuum cleaner has a two-stage filtration system, and it consists of a cyclone of an original design and a fine filter.

The translucent body of the garbage disposal is two-chamber: the air flow with dust and debris enters the first, cyclonic, compartment from the bottom up, twisting around the central conical element. Having reached the top cover, large fractions are thrown into the second chamber, where they remain, and small debris and dust pass through the grille of the central element and enter the fine filter.

Both chambers are closed with one lid, which is securely fixed with latches.

The fine filter is a two-layer “tablet” with an orange rubber rim around the perimeter.

The first layer is made of dark gray foam rubber.

The second layer is made of light-colored non-woven material covered with a synthetic mesh.

The extension tube of the SpeedPro Aqua vacuum cleaner has a trapezoidal cross-section with strongly rounded corners and is made of silver aluminum alloy.

The end of the tube to which the nozzles are connected is a slot nozzle and is equipped with a folding brush.

The nozzle with an electric brush has two degrees of freedom and can bend relative to the extension tube back and forth from 0° to 90° and left and right by approximately 80°. There is a transparent window on its top cover that allows you to control the rotation of the brush.

In the front part of the nozzle there is a narrow strip of transparent plastic that covers the LEDs for illuminating the work area.

On the underside there are rubber slats arranged in a W-shape at the front and a continuous strip at the rear. There are strips of synthetic bristles on the sides of the working surface. They improve the adhesion of the nozzle to the surface without impeding the flow of air with debris to the electric brush. This solution improves lateral suction and makes cleaning along walls and baseboards easier.

The rotating brush element is attached to the nozzle body using a latch at its end.

The working elements of the brush are V-shaped rows of orange synthetic bristles, with the odd ones being continuous and the even ones being evenly spaced tufts.

The wet cleaning attachment consists of two parts: a suction brush and a water tank with a microfiber cloth moistening system.

These two parts are held together using magnets: the washing device (container with water) is fixed easily and held securely.

The principle of supplying water to a microfiber cloth is pneumatic. On the left side of the water tank there is an air pump pedal that creates excess pressure. The incoming air forces water out of the tank through microscopic holes at the bottom of the device. The pedal must be pressed with your foot, once is enough to moisten the rag.

The filling hole is located on the right side of the tank and is closed with a rubber stopper with a seal, which is held in place by a plastic leash.

The underside of the humidifier is made of polished stainless steel. In the middle of the metal panel there is a strip with holes for water supply.

In the center of the upper part there is a magnetic mount with grooves for the rubber-coated wheels of the suction nozzle. They bear the weight of the vacuum cleaner when used without a humidifier unit.

The striped turquoise blue microfiber mop is attached to the wet mop head using Velcro.

The power adapter included with the vacuum cleaner has a magnetic connector. The connector can be connected directly to the device or mounted on a wall bracket for device storage.

The wall bracket has a groove for the charging connector. This accessory comes with a mounting kit: two screws and a pair of nylon dowels.

Instructions

The Philips SpeedPro Aqua vacuum cleaner user manual is available in eight languages: English, Malay, Vietnamese, Thai, Chinese, Korean, Farsi and Arabic. This is a 60-page A5 brochure on fairly thin paper with black and white printing without diagrams or illustrations, which contains extensive information on the safe use of the device, brief instructions on using the wet cleaning attachment, using the included rags (microfiber attachments), as well as recommendations for cleaning the nozzle. The manual ends with links to pages for ordering additional accessories and consumables, technical support, information about processing and a table with possible malfunctions and methods for solving them.

The illustrated appendix to the user manual does not contain text: only pictures and diagrams. Eighteen pages of the A5 brochure in the form of a comic strip provide detailed and accessible recommendations for assembling and using the device, as well as recommendations for cleaning the filter elements, nozzles and caring for the vacuum cleaner itself.

The instructions conclude with tips on ordering additional accessories and consumables: for the SpeedPro series of vacuum cleaners, you can order new microfiber attachments for wet cleaning, filters and working elements of electric brushes. Also, according to the instructions, an attachment with a small electric brush for furniture is available for order.

The illustrations are made in two colors: black and turquoise.

The kit also includes a service book.

Control

The control panel of the SpeedPro Aqua vacuum cleaner is simple: a sliding three-position operating mode switch and a display showing the battery charge level.

The device has two power modes: minimum and maximum. The mechanical slider that switches modes has three positions: “Off”, “I” and “II”. The switch works clearly, it is difficult to accidentally jump from the “Off” position straight to the second mode.

The LED display of the device has five charge level segments. When the vacuum cleaner is turned on, they glow white and, as the battery capacity is used up, they turn off sequentially - from five to one. When the charge level becomes extremely low, the last segment lights up red.

When the device is charging, one of the segments pulsates, and the rest (if the charge level is more than 1/5) glow white, turning on sequentially.

The readiness of the battery for operation can thus be assessed with an accuracy of approximately 20%.

Exploitation

Before using for the first time, the vacuum cleaner, like all cordless devices, should be fully charged. The Philips FC6728 arrived with the battery about a third full, and it took just over two hours to get it ready for use.

Assembling the device did not require much time. The extension tube is snapped into the body and the selected nozzle is connected to it. You can start cleaning.

The vacuum cleaner is well balanced and fits comfortably in the hand, making it easy and pleasant to use. The thickness of the handle is sufficient to comfortably operate the device, and its coating does not allow it to slip out even from a slightly damp palm.

The nozzle with an electric brush for dry cleaning turned out to be effective, productive and quiet. It performed well both on hard, smooth surfaces and on soft surfaces with short and medium-length piles. On heavily fleecy carpets, the rotating brush creates noticeable resistance when the vacuum cleaner moves towards itself, which, however, does not interfere with work.

The ability to suck up debris with the side of the nozzle makes cleaning along walls, baseboards and furniture much easier: you just need to move it parallel to the wall without turning it again.

The mobility of this brush is good: its hinge is flexible enough to rotate to the desired angle back and forth and left and right, but does not wobble. Unfortunately, the vacuum cleaner does not have a vertical parking position; during pauses in cleaning, you have to rest it on a wall or furniture.

The illumination of the work area turned out to be a very pleasant feature, which we previously considered unnecessary - why, it would seem, to illuminate the floor when cleaning? However, in the process of getting to know the Philips SpeedPro Aqua vacuum cleaner, we appreciated the possibility of using it in dark corners and under furniture, where we missed some of the dirt with other devices. The low position of the backlight allows you to notice debris on the floor that might not be visible with overhead lighting. We conclude: the option is very useful.

The wet cleaning attachment is convenient and simple. To moisten a completely dry rag, two presses on the tank pedal are enough, and in order to increase the humidity during the cleaning process, one is enough. One or two portions of water are enough to wash the floor of a medium-sized room without over-wetting it. The tank capacity is more than enough to clean an apartment with an area of about 70 m²: there is enough water in it for approximately 25 pumps.

It’s great that you can use detergents when cleaning wet. By adding a few drops of low-foaming floor cleaner to the tank, we quickly and easily removed greasy stains from the area of the floor near the stove that would have been more difficult to remove without a surfactant. It also turned out to be much easier to wash the microfiber head after cleaning with detergent.

The low location of the extension tube attachment to the body allows it to be positioned horizontally for cleaning the space under furniture. The height of both nozzles is only 75 millimeters, so you can clean the entire length of the tube under the sofa, bed or closet.

In a handheld vacuum cleaner configuration, the Philips SpeedPro Aqua is just as convenient and efficient. Using the crevice nozzle on the body, you can quickly remove dust from hard-to-reach places that cannot be cleaned with floor brushes. If you need to remove high-lying interior parts - cornices, top shelves of cabinets, chandeliers, etc. - you can use the end of the extension tube that is also arranged. In this case, the folding brush allows you to clean curtains and furniture without damaging them.

The battery life of the device is enough to completely clean a three-room apartment of average size in mixed mode or to quickly sweep the floors at maximum power. It is convenient to control the battery capacity during the cleaning process: the indicator is always before your eyes.

The transparency of the waste container is sufficient to assess its fullness. The maximum capacity marks are located at an angle corresponding to the working position of the device, and there is no need to move the vacuum cleaner to a vertical position to check whether the dust container is full. The marks are placed on both sides of the device - this is also convenient.

The bulk of the debris is collected in the second chamber of the dust collector; practically no debris remains in the cyclone compartment. Only very fine dust and a certain amount of thin and light cat hair can penetrate the conical grille of the cyclone. Emptying the waste container is convenient.

There are no traces of dust on the outside of the fine filter; its efficiency can be considered excellent.

However, some fine dust penetrates behind the fine filter due to the loose fit of its rubber seal: traces of it can be seen behind the grille covering the inlet of the vacuum cleaner. Because of this, we are forced to slightly reduce our assessment of the effectiveness of the filtration system.

Care

For optimal performance, the manufacturer recommends washing the garbage disposal body at least once every two weeks with regular use.

Before using the module for wet cleaning, its tank should be rinsed and filled - you can use tap water for this, or you can add low-foaming detergent to it. After cleaning, the liquid from the tank should be completely poured out.

The electric brush should be regularly cleared of hair and threads wrapped around it. It is recommended to use scissors to remove them.

To clean the tank from the deposits that form inside, it should be filled with a detergent solution, left for twelve hours, shaken vigorously, drained and rinsed with clean water.

Microfiber floor pads can be washed in a washing machine or by hand. The manufacturer recommends changing them every six months.

Our measurements

We provide measurements of the mass of the components of the vacuum cleaner in the table.

DetailWeight, g
The main unit of the vacuum cleaner with an installed dustbin and filter1530
Extension tube330
Nozzle with electric brush for dry cleaning760
Wet nozzle (dry weight)1065

The capacity of the water tank, according to our measurements, is 355 ml. Thus, in the manual configuration you have to hold from 1530 to 1860 g. The weight in dry mode is 2620 g, and the maximum weight of the Philips SpeedPro Aqua in wet mode is 3280.

The noise emitted by the vacuum cleaner is 66 dBA at minimum power mode and 71 dBA at maximum

Battery life also depends on the selected power, as well as the attachment used. The electric brush drive and LED lighting slightly reduce the operating time.

Minimum powerMaximum power
Crevice nozzle48 minutes26 minutes
Nozzle with electric brush and work area illumination44 minutes24 minutes

The full charging cycle of the vacuum cleaner, from turning off during operation to stopping charging, is 3 hours 40 minutes.

We determined suction power (what it is and how we measure it is described in a separate article) when operating a vacuum cleaner without a pipe and nozzles. The dependence of suction power on the created vacuum is shown in the graph below:

The maximum suction power, according to our measurements, is just under 25 W. This is not much even for cordless vacuum cleaners.

During charging, the vacuum cleaner consumes 14 W, in sleep mode - less than 0.1 W.

conclusions

The Philips SpeedPro Aqua vertical cordless vacuum cleaner will quickly and efficiently perform not only dry, but also wet cleaning of the room and will be useful on any floors: parquet, laminate, tiles and soft surfaces. The ability to use detergents during wet cleaning will make it easier to destroy even stubborn dirt, and LED illumination of the work area will make dry cleaning more efficient. In its manual configuration, this model will clean hard-to-reach areas with ease.

During instrumental tests, the device demonstrated not very high suction power, but operating experience has shown that the effective operation of the nozzles compensates for this shortcoming.

The Philips FC6728 we tested really lacked the ability to clean furniture manually using a special attachment with an electric brush. It is not included in this configuration, but according to the user manual, it can be ordered additionally.

pros:

  • possibility of wet cleaning, including using detergents
  • LED illumination of the working area
  • convenient design and large volume of waste bin
  • long battery life
  • original and effective design of nozzles
  • low noise

Minuses:

  • low suction power
  • no furniture brush as standard
