Modern refrigerators defrost automatically using the principle of drip, wind or combined defrosting. The most popular models on the Russian market are No Frost models with a forced air circulation system. They have a fan installed that blows air over the evaporator located in the housing behind the rear wall. A wind defrost system is often installed in both the refrigerator and freezer compartments. The BOSCH brand may have this function in the freezer, and a drip system is used for the refrigerator compartment.
With any scheme, the refrigerator should defrost automatically. If ice forms on the walls, it means that the defrosting system is broken or another unit that is responsible for the temperature in the chamber is damaged. Sensor failures are often detected, sending incorrect signals to the control unit. The source of the problem can also be determined by the indication. For example, a short circuit in the defrost sensor on BOSCH models is indicated by an error code on the display.
Why doesn't the refrigerator defrost?
- Improper transportation and installation. If transported carelessly, oil from the compressor may enter the capillary pipeline. A blockage forms and freon cannot circulate normally. If a BOSCH refrigerator is installed close to a wall or close to a heating radiator, this can also cause the cooling and defrosting system to fail.
- Failure to comply with operating rules. The reason for the violation of the temperature regime in the chamber is often a loosely closed door. If refrigerators have sound or light indication, then it is much easier to monitor this. But if the door opens for a long time or closes poorly, then over time ice and snow will form on the walls. This can also be triggered by warm (hot) food in the refrigerator, which causes condensation to form and disrupt the temperature inside the chamber.
- Breakdowns of individual parts. If the BOSCH refrigerator does not defrost and ice forms on the walls, then failure of the thermostat (temperature sensor), fan, defrost heating element, as well as freon leakage or clogging of the capillary pipeline is possible. It will be problematic to independently determine the failed part. You can rely on error codes, but even in this case, you cannot replace the device on your own. Therefore, it is better to call a technician who will identify the damaged unit and replace it with a new one.
There is an opinion that BOSCH refrigerators with an automatic system do not need defrosting. Sellers of household appliances often convince us of this. In fact, it is advisable to defrost your refrigerator manually at least once a year. You need to turn it off for a day so that the camera thaws naturally. In addition to cleaning the internal compartments, you can also clean the drainage hole on the back wall (if drip defrosting is installed). After defrosting and turning on, it is advisable to wait until the refrigerator starts working at full capacity, and only then load food.
Preparing for the defrosting process
The main rule that must be followed when defrosting the refrigerator is not to start work if you have a lot of food and do not have a temporary place for their proper storage.
Do not use a construction or household hair dryer or heaters for this purpose; it is unsafe. Do not apply chemical reagents as they can damage the device.
If rubber seals do not function well, try lubricating them with silicone or vegetable oil.
To avoid compressor breakdown, it is recommended to turn it on after at least 12 hours. Try to open the doors as little as possible in the next 3 hours so that the device has the opportunity to quickly create the desired microclimate.

Instructions for defrosting the Indesit refrigerator
There are three types of household models of Indesit refrigerators:
- Equipped with a no frost auto-defrost option in both the freezer and refrigerator compartments.
- Mixed type (freezer with no frost, refrigerator compartment with drip defrosting).
- Devices that provide for manual defrosting of chambers.
Regardless of whether your refrigerator model is old or modern with “no frost”, the electrical appliance must be defrosted at the first sign of ice or frost. A layer of ice prevents stable and safe operation of the equipment.
It is correct to defrost the refrigerator in the cool season of the year: winter, spring or autumn. In hot weather, more effort will be needed to set the chambers to the optimal temperature.
Turning off the Indesit refrigerator for defrosting
The instructions for defrosting a two-chamber Indesit refrigerator at the first stage provide for turning off the device. Set the temperature regulator to the zero position and remove the plug from the socket.
It is necessary to turn off the electrical appliance: during the defrosting process, the refrigerator will be open, the chambers will be filled with hot air, and the motor will work hard.
This will lead to an increase in temperature and engine failure.
In addition, turning on the refrigerator during defrosting increases the risk of water getting on current-conducting elements. This may cause a short circuit and electric shock. When disconnecting, you need to position the power cord plug higher so that moisture does not get on the connecting element.
Clearance of products and shelves
The next step is to remove products, containers, and shelves from the chambers. Food must be placed in a cool place, especially perishable food. You can put food in thermal bags or containers with ice or cool water. If you leave the contents of the refrigerator inside, then during defrosting the food will cool the surrounding area and slow down the process.
Shelves and drawers for vegetables, removable cells should also be removed. It is easier to remove pieces of ice from an empty chamber. During defrosting, the removed equipment can be washed and dried.
Waiting for defrosting
There are several ways to quickly defrost an Indesit two-chamber refrigerator:
- Place vessels with hot water in both chambers.
- Fill the refrigerator with heating pads or plastic bottles of boiling water.
- Warm up areas covered with frost or ice using a hairdryer.
- Place a heat gun or fan in front of the refrigerator.
- Wipe the walls with a rag or sponge soaked in hot water or soapy water.
- Spray the inside of the device with hot water using a spray bottle.
- Raise the temperature in the kitchen by turning on heating appliances and the stove.
During the thawing process, water will definitely go beyond the boundaries of the chambers. Place pieces of absorbent fabric around the device (old terry towels or microfiber scraps will do). Rags should also be placed inside the chambers.
There is no need to wait for the ice to turn into water: wipe off the frost that comes off the walls with a wet sponge, and put the pieces of falling ice in the sink.
Washing and drying
When defrosting is complete, wipe the chambers with a dry cloth. After this, you can begin cleaning the refrigerator from dirt inside and out. A weak solution of dishwashing detergent (2 teaspoons per glass of water) can remove a small amount of grease and dust deposits.
To clean equipment with know frost, it is also permissible to use both homemade and ready-made detergents. Use the same composition as with the regular model, or purchase a spray, wet wipes, etc. Specially developed products not only clean the surface well, but also disinfect.
If more serious contamination is present (stains, stains and smudges), folk remedies such as laundry soap, hydrogen peroxide and baking soda will help. Don't forget to carefully clean the sealing tape as well. It is important not to abuse aggressive chemicals and compounds with abrasive particles to avoid damage to the housing.
When working with detergents, be sure to protect the skin of your hands with household gloves made of impermeable material (rubber, nitrile, latex, polyethylene).
Once defrosting and cleaning is complete, leave the refrigerator door open for a certain period of time until the moisture has completely evaporated from the surfaces. Also check the tightness of the seal: you need it to fit snugly around the perimeter of the door, leaving no gaps.
Switching on after defrosting
You cannot immediately connect the refrigerator to the network. After drying, close the device with mechanical or drip defrosting, turn it on and leave for 2 hours. Then load the shelves, drawers and products.
The minimum time in the off state for automatic defrosting “no frost” devices is 12 hours. It is better to leave the refrigerator for a day. If you do not follow the rules for turning on the device, the compressor and engine may fail.

Compressor overheating
Sometimes the engine overheats as a result of operating at maximum power.
Gently touch the engine with your hand. If it is hot, then the thermal protection may have tripped. The problem is solved by turning off the refrigerator for 2 - 3 hours. During this time the compressor must cool down. It is also worth changing the temperature regime.
Frequent overheating of the compressor will lead to its breakdown. Repairs will be expensive; sometimes it is cheaper to buy a new refrigerator.
If the device began to operate in normal mode after being turned off, then air stopped flowing into the unit or there was not enough air. That is, it needs to be moved a little away from the wall. If the problem persists, then you need to contact a specialist.

The freezer works, but the refrigerator compartment does not - how to fix it?
Before contacting the service center, you can try to find out the cause of the refrigerator breakdown yourself.
The main difficulty is that most of the cold gets into the freezer compartment, and the refrigerant is spent primarily on reducing the temperature in this compartment of the device. After the freezer compartment has been cooled, the remaining freon will be evenly distributed throughout all the other tubes that are directed into the refrigerator compartment. This is why the temperature in the freezer is always much lower than in the refrigerator. The freezer works, but the refrigerator does not, how to fix it:
- However, if for some reason the blower fails, the cold will concentrate only in the freezer. To troubleshoot problems, try to inspect the appliance. At the initial stage, open the door and check how tightly it closes.
- Often the cause of deterioration in the operation of the device is wear of the rubber seal. That is why the rubber seal needs to be replaced. You can try to restore the seal. This option is suitable if the refrigerator is quite old and the rubber band may have dried out due to its long service life. Fill a large bowl with boiling water, remove the rubber seal, and place in boiling water.
- Hold for a few minutes. Under the influence of hot water, the elasticity of the sealing gum will improve and its properties will be restored. Usually, after such manipulations, the elastic actually becomes much softer and more elastic, and the door fits tightly. Before starting the manipulation, you can move the elastic band aside and see what is behind it. Very often crumbs, food debris and mold accumulate there.

What not to do during and after defrosting
Some “home geniuses” use for defrosting:
- irons included;
- industrial hair dryers;
- hot stones or metal utensils on the stove.
We recommend: Lifehack for sun protection: how to stick foil on a window and save on air conditioning
As a result, the plastic in the freezer melts and the cooling system cracks.
Heating pads are also not suitable - as soon as the ice starts to melt, the device will short out.
Never sprinkle salt on ice. This method is suitable for sidewalks and highways, but not for machinery. Household plastic will begin to deteriorate when exposed to aggressive chemicals.
Experienced technicians do not recommend defrosting the device in hot weather. During defrosting, the refrigerator will become very hot, so it will take a long time to reach the temperature. This will increase the load on the compressor and reduce the service life of the equipment.
For the same reason, you cannot load the chambers with food immediately after turning on the refrigerator. Let it cool thoroughly - about an hour. And only after that return the products to their place.
