Updated: 06/24/2021 Excess humidity in the home can be a real problem. It not only leads to such unpleasant consequences as foggy windows and wet clothes, but also often causes the appearance of mold, which in turn visually spoils the appearance of the room and can pose a serious danger to your health. Mold can cause allergic reactions and affect the respiratory system and other body systems. Therefore, it is so important to maintain optimal climatic parameters in the apartment. A dehumidifier can help you deal with excessive humidity quickly and easily.
Dehumidifiers are divided into two main types:
- Condensation.
This is the most common type. It is best suited for apartments and private houses. The principle of its operation is quite simple. The fan passes air to the evaporator, where it is cooled below the dew point. The moisture condenses and is discharged into a special container, and the air enters the condenser, where it is heated to the previous temperature and supplied back to the room. The most effective type, the disadvantages include the ability to work at temperatures exclusively above 3-5˚C. - Adsorption.
Used in industrial environments where temperatures can be negative. The operating principle is based on the adsorbing properties of certain materials. The air passes through the rotor, excess moisture is condensed and absorbed by a special material, and the air comes out already dried. This is a less effective type and, as a rule, is not used in residential areas.
What to look for when purchasing:
- Performance.
It is determined by the amount of moisture that the device can remove from the air per day. - Air exchange.
This is the volume of air that the device moves in an hour. The higher the indicator, the more efficiently and quickly moisture is removed. It makes sense to focus on the area of the room; the larger it is, the larger this parameter should be. - Power.
The larger it is, the higher the performance and efficiency of the device. - The presence of a hygrostat.
This is a sensor that records humidity parameters. With its help, the device independently supports the set mode, which simplifies its use. - Additional features.
More expensive models, as a rule, have more modes: air purification systems, child protection, auto start and other features. - Weight and overall dimensions.
- Noise level.

Principle of operation
These devices come in three types; let’s look at how each of them works:
- Assimilation dryer . It is used only in enterprises where it is necessary to process an impressive volume of air. Its work is based on uninterrupted air exchange; as a result, moisture is removed from the room in a natural way, giving way to dry air masses coming from outside. The disadvantage of the method is its low efficiency. Along with moisture, a lot of heat is lost into ventilation, plus the energy costs for operating the system are high. Another important point is that in places with high humidity all year round (Mediterranean region, Crimea) there is no point in installing this type; the effect will be almost zero.
- Adsorption dryer . One of the most common. The operating principle is based on the ability of special substances in the filter to bind moisture directly from the air mass. A popular binder in these desiccants is silica gel. These are pale milky colored balls and are often placed in shoe boxes in a small white bag. Silica gel itself is environmentally friendly, relatively cheap, and popular due to its properties. The adsorption mechanism is carried out as follows: moist air enters the rotor, rotated by an electric motor, and the counter flow, heated to 120°C, “collects” water vapor.
- Condensation dryer . The most popular type. The operating principle is based on the property of air masses to independently get rid of excess water vapor when cooling. The mechanism is as follows - the air temperature decreases, along with it the maximum amount of moisture that can be contained in one cubic meter of air (relatively speaking) decreases. The moisture settles in the form of condensation. This physical property of air masses is used in many places, and morning dew on the grass appears for precisely the same reason. In a dehumidifier, the process occurs as follows - the air sequentially passes through a cold heat exchanger, cooling to a temperature not exceeding the “dew point”. Moisture partially settles on the evaporator fins. Then, passing through a hot heat exchanger, the air is heated to comfortable values (about twenty degrees) and released back. The moisture is collected in a special container (sump) or discharged into the sewer.
What causes high humidity and how to deal with it
In addition to purchasing a special dehumidifier, you will need to take additional measures to prevent the accumulation of excess moisture. So, what factors lead to excess humidity in a room?
- Insufficient ventilation of the room, which may be a consequence of improper installation of plastic windows and roofs
- Low base and thin external walls that are not additionally insulated
- Small kitchen with a small window and no hood
- Lack of hood in the bathroom and toilet
- Too frequent cooking in the kitchen, which is accompanied by enormous steam formation, but at the same time the windows are closed. Then moisture gradually begins to accumulate in the walls, which eventually leads to fungus.
It is imperative to combat this, and the first step is to purchase a special dehumidifier. But, do not forget that the dehumidifier only fights the consequences, and at the same time draws electricity. Therefore, you definitely need to try to eliminate the root cause, at least a little.
Naturally, you will not be able to move your house from a damp lowland. But insulating the base, making a good blind area and a moisture-proof coat is quite possible. Then you won’t have to turn on the dehumidifier too often.
How does a dehumidifier work and how does it work?
His principle is very simple.
The device captures air that enters the condenser, the temperature of which is lower than in the room. And from this, water in a gaseous state turns into condensate and flows into the tank, and the air returns back to the room, passing through the heating radiator. That is, the room is also additionally heated, which is necessary, since a damp room is always cooler than with a normal balance of dryness. See also -

What to look for when choosing
How to choose a good dehumidifier? What to look for when purchasing? Our advice will help you make the right choice.
- Performance. One of the most basic parameters that you should pay attention to when buying a new device. Calculated as the volume of moisture in liters. How to roughly calculate the required productivity for a room? Multiply the area of the room by 0.7. Of course, it is better to choose a model with a performance reserve. Be that as it may, only a specialist can help you choose the right dehumidifier with the required performance for your room.
- Volume of the condensate tank. Some dehumidifier models have a built-in function to automatically turn off the device when the condensate container is completely filled. To continue operation, you need to drain the water. So, the larger the tank volume, the less often you will need to drain the water.
- Noise level. If you use a dehumidifier in a domestic environment, the noise level should be between 32-36 dB. It is this parameter that affects your comfort, so be careful when choosing a device.
- Air flow. It is quite difficult to calculate, however, here is our hint: in 1 hour of effective operation, the dehumidifier should pass a volume of air equal to the volume of the room 3 times.
- Availability of additional functions. We have already written about them a little higher in our article. Additional functions are an optional parameter, however, they can significantly simplify the use of the purchased dehumidifier.
Dryer connection diagrams
Dehumidifiers can be connected to ventilation as a separate unit or as a built-in system. Installation of a self-contained dehumidifier is carried out in the attic or basement. This type of equipment is very rare in a house or apartment. The noise and heat emanating from such a unit can disturb residents. This dehumidifier is recommended to be connected to air ducts.
When using an independent unit, the air is directed directly to the space where it is necessary to dry the air. Such equipment is most often installed in the attic, technical floor, ventilation room, basement or closet. A device of this type is not connected to a centralized system responsible for heating the air in the room during the cold season in order to compensate for heat losses and maintain the required air temperature. An independent unit is perfect for buildings with ductless ventilation systems and air conditioning systems.
The exhaust ducts of the device built into the air duct are combined with heating systems. The recommended connection circuits in this case are indicated by the device manufacturer.
When installing forced ventilation for the whole house, outside air enters the ventilation system separately through a separate supply valve.
Dedicated dehumidification systems are much more energy efficient and economical than standard air conditioning systems. A properly selected dehumidification system can function year-round, avoiding the negative consequences of discomfort from excess moisture. Installation of such equipment can quickly eliminate the cause of possible mold formation.

It has 4 operating modes, 3 of which allow you to achieve the desired level of humidity in the room, and the 4th is used for drying wet laundry. Also, this device has a night program that reduces the noise level during operation. Therefore, such a dehumidifier can be left on overnight. And the timer provided in the device will allow you to program the operating time before automatic shutdown in the range from 1 to 24 hours. Among other features of this dehumidifier, it is worth noting that it provides 2 ways to collect condensate - into a tank with a volume of slightly more than 2 liters or into a special drainage hole, from where the condensate goes further through a hose, simplifying the use of this device as much as possible. I would also like to note that this dehumidifier has an LED display and indicators on the control panel that allow you to monitor the operation and the level of condensate filling in the tank. And thanks to a special washable filter, this dehumidifier will also rid the room of dust. Overall an excellent multi-functional dehumidifier for small spaces.

Rating of the most popular brands
We offer you a list of the most popular brands that are popular with us:
- Timberk
- Ballu
- Master
- DanVex
These are all companies specializing in climate control equipment and having many options and models to suit every taste and budget. Of course, there are household dehumidifiers from lesser-known manufacturers, but we would recommend that you take a closer look at these four.
We told you the most important things you need to understand when choosing a dehumidifier for your home or apartment. We really hope that the information will be useful to you!
Purpose and functions
The main purpose of a dehumidifier is to reduce air humidity in industrial and domestic premises.
Among the main functions of this equipment are the prevention of negative consequences in such situations:
- moisture getting on equipment;
- decreased working conditions and increased injuries due to increased humidity levels;
- the spread of fungi and mold in production and in domestic conditions;
- the occurrence of corrosion;
- violation of sanitary and hygienic standards.
Desiccant for asthma
If anyone in your home suffers from asthma or other respiratory problems, you may want to consider purchasing a dehumidifier with an antibacterial filter and ionizer.
The antibacterial filter kills bacteria on contact and provides much cleaner and healthier air than air filtered by a standard dust filter.
Breathing problems can occur due to the large amount of positive ions such as pollen, spores and dust in the air. The ionizer releases negative ions into the air, and these negative ions attach themselves to the positive ions. The enlarged ion becomes too heavy to float and sinks to the floor.
The result is fewer positive ions in the air, which should make breathing easier.
Keep in mind that while an antibacterial filter and ionizer should alleviate respiratory problems, they probably won't cure it completely.
No. 2 – Xiaomi WDH318EFW1
Price: 18,990 rubles
Xiaomi WDH318EFW1 is a popular model that has earned the love of users for its efficiency. It's all about a direct-flow electric motor, which passes the air sucked from the room through cold and hot radiators, thereby drying it. Experts claim that the model can reduce the humidity in a small room (18 square meters) by a third in just 1 hour.
Like other devices from the Chinese developer, this dehumidifier supports synchronization with a smartphone. This allows you to control it remotely, which is especially convenient if you are lying in bed. By the way, you can place it in the bedroom without fear that the device will wake you up - its noise level is minimal. The disadvantages include the body made of white plastic, which quickly gets dirty.
Ballu BDH-30L
What additional functions may the device have?
Each brand that represents dehumidifiers on the climate control market has its own “tricks”. The more there are, the correspondingly higher the cost.
For example, there are models of dehumidifiers with an ultraviolet lamp. During operation, such a device will not only remove excess moisture from the air, but also cleanse it of pathogens, which is especially important in the off-season.
You can choose a unit with replaceable carbon filters - it will absorb unpleasant odors.
Some dehumidifiers can ionize the air. Such varieties not only clean, but also saturate air ceilings with ozone, which has a beneficial effect on health.
The “Auto restart” function is very convenient. If the device turns off as a result of a power outage, then thanks to this option the desiccant will return to working condition as soon as the electrical current supply to the network is restored.
It is very convenient when the dehumidifier has a removable, washable filter. With such models, you can clean the device yourself and maintain hygiene in the room. In addition, regular cleaning of the filter will extend the life of the unit.
The filter needs to be cleaned at least once every three months, or more often.
Some dehumidifiers have a timer - these devices can be programmed to turn on and off automatically.
No. 6 – Steba LE 160
Price: 16,990 rubles
Steba LE 160 is an excellent option for users looking for a compact dehumidifier for an apartment. In reviews, users pay special attention to this point, which is not at all accidental. Due to its miniature dimensions of 36.50x22x50 cm and weight of 13 kg, finding a place for its location is not at all difficult, and the presence of a handle and wheels makes transportation easier.
An interesting feature is the ability to manually adjust the direction of the air flow, which is also liked by the owners. The model has three operating modes in total; switching between them is carried out using touch buttons. The weak points of the device include the volume of the condensate container - it holds only 2 liters of water. Despite this, in terms of price-quality ratio, the device is an extremely profitable solution.
