Heat guns: diesel fuel, no electricity, low noise, installation of heat guns

Purpose of gas heat guns

It is important to understand the purpose of gas heat guns, since natural or liquefied gas is used as fuel, which is not suitable for every homeowner or entrepreneur. Here are three areas of application of such equipment:

  1. Heating of industrial premises - in this area, these units are very popular, as they demonstrate high efficiency and cover a large heating area.
  2. Preventing humidity in warehouses or workshops - gas heat guns also perform well in this case.
  3. Construction work and repairs - this area includes both commercial activities and the everyday needs of ordinary people.

REFERENCE . Compact dimensions and convenient shape are the unconditional advantages of the device.

How to choose a suitable heat gun

If you are going to buy a gas heat gun, focus on its performance and power, comparing these parameters with the heated volume. Remember that for every 10 sq. m area requires at least 1 kW of heat. If you plan to use the unit for construction purposes, for drying plaster or installing suspended ceilings, you should choose a more powerful model.

Remember that the greater the power, the greater the noise level and the greater the gas consumption. If the task is to heat a small basement, cellar or greenhouse with a heat gun, choose small-sized models - they are somewhat similar to ordinary fans. To heat large hangars and warehouses, more efficient units will be needed. If people work in the premises and there is no ventilation, take a closer look at indirect heating heat guns.

When choosing a heat gun in the catalog of a particular store, carefully read the descriptions - all the characteristics and features are indicated there. And by looking at the Yandex.Market catalog, you can read the reviews. By the way, they all indicate the high efficiency and unpretentiousness of these devices.

Another selection criterion is the manufacturer. If you choose between domestic devices and foreign ones, then you won’t be able to give someone special preference. Russian and foreign brands make good gas heat guns, characterized by endurance and good technical characteristics. But if we look at the ratings, they are headed by the Master brand.

Design features and principle of operation of a gas heat gun

If a potential buyer is going to purchase a gas heat gun, then, firstly, it is important to understand the design features and structure of such a device. The device has a cylindrical shape and wheels on a stand. The main parts are located on the inside: a fuel supply system, a special fan, a thermostat and a gas burner. The remaining space is usually called the combustion chamber. This is another important design element, which is located on the body itself or on the transport stand.

This diagram demonstrates the simplest design; there may also be additional thermostats and heat exchangers.

There are also electric heat guns, which differ from the gas version by the presence of heating elements instead of a gas supply system. Their main advantage is high safety, which allows them to be used in residential areas. A gas heat gun is not suitable for residential premises.

The principle of operation of the gun is explained as follows:

  1. The electric motor drives the fan, which blows cold air inside the chamber.
  2. Gas is supplied to the burner, which is ignited using piezo ignition.
  3. The flame heats the air inside the gun.
  4. The pressurized fan mentioned above releases a stream of warm air into the room.

IMPORTANT! For a more complete understanding of the operating features, it is recommended that you familiarize yourself with the diagram below.

What is such a unit?

This is a universal device that can be used to heat any room. Their effect is especially noticeable in small rooms without additional heating. The principle of operation of the units is the point supply of a warm air flow. And this advantage creates an additional advantage compared to conventional oil heaters and convectors: the latter cannot cope with heating a large volume of air.

The concept of almost all devices is the same:

  1. The air heater is enclosed in a metal casing, which has a mandatory hole for air intake.
  2. The fan inside the device converts the flow of cold air into hot air and promotes its distribution throughout the room. The output is through the heating element.

The main advantage of such a device is its high performance. It is this that contributes to the uniform distribution of warm air even over large areas, because the heat output is very high. In addition, such devices usually provide economical fuel consumption. And if the device has a thermostat, then the time of its use can be controlled: for example, the gun will turn on if the air temperature drops below comfortable.

Heat gun thermostat

Of course, there are many models on the modern market. There are also those that are suitable even for a small apartment - mini-formats of such heating units will not take up much space, but will do the job adequately.

Classification of gas heat guns

Even taking into account the simplicity of the design, there are several categories of gas heat guns that differ from each other. Each of them will be discussed in more detail.

Heat gun with direct heating of air masses

In this case, open fire is used. Such devices are characterized by high efficiency, but they provoke the formation of harmful components that enter the room. For this reason, it is strictly not recommended to use this device in residential areas, since the amount of fresh air will tend to a minimum.

IMPORTANT! The owner of this device should not cook food in a flame or try to dry wet clothes - safety comes first!

Indirect heating heat gun

Compared to the previous version, an indirect heating gas heat gun simplifies the user’s life and does not harm his health. This becomes possible thanks to the presence of a chimney in the structure, which allows all harmful emitted elements to be removed outside the room. Among the disadvantages of this device are high prices and a narrow range on the Russian market. Plus, the dimensions of such a device are noticeably larger, as is the weight, which negatively affects the ease of transportation.

REFERENCE . By comparing the device of two modifications, you can immediately understand which is better, because it is best to pay attention to safety first.

Infrared heat gun

An infrared heat gun works on the principle of heating nearby objects, not air. Such a unit acts as a kind of sun. The distribution of absorption capacity does not extend beyond the radiation range. The advantage of such a device is that it is completely safe, since its radiation is harmless to humans. Such devices are used in places where spot heating is needed, for example, in greenhouses.

Advantages and disadvantages

Let us remind you once again: a gas heat gun is not intended for use as permanent heating. It is great for quickly heating up a cold cottage, garage, etc. It performed well when heating buildings under construction. Can be used to speed up the drying of plaster and other mixtures (where technology allows it). But you should not use the unit for constant heating of a residential building.

Further on the pros:

  • Warms up the air really quickly.
  • Fuel is inexpensive.
  • The smell during operation is rather an exception (in poorly adjusted models).

    This is what a gas heat gun looks like. They may differ in size and color

Now the cons:

  • It burns oxygen, so good ventilation is essential.
  • Officially, refilling the cylinder is problematic (this is prohibited at gas stations);
  • The expense is high.
  • If the cylinder is in the cold, it burns poorly.
  • Some models are very noisy.
  • Electricity is required (for the fan to operate).
  • The temperature in front of the nozzle of a working gun is very high.
  • With half the gas in the cylinder, problems may begin: it often goes out. But this problem is typical for small-capacity cylinders. When using 50-liter ones everything is fine.

For industrial premises there are models with a fuel tank.
As you can see, this is far from an ideal option. But for quickly bringing rooms from sub-zero to positive temperatures - it’s very good. For example, when you arrive at a dacha that is heated by a stove, do not freeze until it warms up, but turn on the gas heat gun and after 15-20 minutes you can undress. An alternative may be a gas infrared heater. It is perhaps better for a dacha, but you need to think about the garage and other technical premises.

Popular manufacturers

In the 90s, the main leaders of the Russian market in the production of heat guns were Western Europe and Asia. In the 2000s, Russian companies began to appear that produce climate control equipment. Now there are a huge number of domestic brands that confidently compete with their foreign colleagues, while remaining in the low price segment. Here is an overview of several leaders in the production of climate control equipment:

  • Resanta , a Swiss brand founded in 1932, remains a leader in the production of heaters in 2021.
  • Ballu is a leading Thai manufacturer of air conditioning equipment for the home and industry, opened in 1980, which covers the whole of Eurasia and is known even in North America. The products are applicable for garages, cottages, and industrial premises.
  • Frico is a European company that produces products that undergo strict AMCA and ISO quality certification.
  • Master is a manufacturer of air treatment systems for both large and small areas. The master offers a wide range of heat guns.
  • Kraton is a Russian brand that has the best price-quality ratio, as it offers budget equipment that meets all European quality standards.
  • Zubr is another Russian manufacturer of construction tools and equipment that has its own laboratory for pre-sale testing of products.
  • Interskol is the only brand in the CIS in its niche that is officially recognized by the EU.
  • Sibrtech is a Russian trademark that takes into account local operating conditions during production. The products are famous for their high strength and reliability.

IMPORTANT ! Also worthy of attention are companies such as Caliber, Big Dutchman, Wester and Remington.

Manufacturers

The hardest part when buying is not choosing power or characteristics. This is, of course, important, but more important is the quality of the equipment. And it often depends on the manufacturer. Gas guns are no exception. Few people would agree to spend too much money on this equipment—the option is temporary. Usually they choose according to the price/quality criterion. “Half-Chinese” fit this category. These are those whose management is located in Europe-America, and production in China. Russian gas guns are in approximately the same category. Here is a list of popular brands:

  • Bally (Ballu). There is a plant in Russia, it produces gas heating guns. The quality, like the reviews, is average. But it’s not a problem to replace it under warranty;
  • Resanta (Resanta);

    Features may vary

  • Master (Master);
  • Zubr (Bison);
  • Kraton (Russia + China);
  • Caliber;
  • Interskol.

It cannot be said that all models from the manufacturers listed above are successful. There are some that are very good, but there are some that are just so-so.

Which gas heat gun to choose: evaluation and selection criteria

First of all, when choosing, you need to focus on the following technical indicators:

  1. Maximum heating power . This parameter affects the heated area; it is indicated in the instructions. It is necessary to select a power sufficient to heat the room in which the gun will be used. Otherwise, it will not be possible to achieve the desired temperature.
  2. Warm air capacity is the amount of warm air that passes through the device. The indicator partially affects the warming up speed. Insufficient heating rate will mean cold air is blown out.
  3. Fuel used . Propane or butane is used as fuel in gas heat guns. The specific heat of combustion is about the same, but butane burns a little faster. This provokes an increase in productivity of approximately 10%. True, a negative temperature will mean the transformation of the fuel into a liquid state, unsuitable for use. For this reason, using a gun with such fuel in a garage can be problematic.
  4. Power consumption . This indicator does not need to be taken into account as long as the operation occurs from the network. However, in standalone use it will be essential. It is better to give preference to the most energy-efficient devices.
  5. Ignition system . In the case of manual ignition, matches are used. Quite inconvenient, but reliable option. An alternative method would be piezo ignition, for which a special piezo element will be used. In this case, a simple push of a button will be required to create a spark. With the impulsive type of ignition, a connection to the electrical network is required. With the first type, it will be inconvenient to set fire, but the next two are vulnerable to moisture and dust. For this reason, the manual method is often preferred.
  6. Possibility of temperature adjustment.
  7. Fuel consumption.

These are the main parameters that should be taken into account when choosing a gas installation for heating a room.

Power selection

To roughly estimate the required power of heating devices, calculate by area. For a detached building in the Middle Zone, 1 kW of heat is required per 10 square meters of area. A gas heat gun is not intended for continuous heating. Usually it is taken to quickly warm up a technical room, cottage, garage, etc. Other devices are often used to maintain temperature. For this reason, traditional power calculations by area or volume are not suitable.

The formula for calculating the required power does not change:

Formula for calculating the power of a heat gun

Where:

  • V is the volume of the room (multiply the height, width and length):
  • dT is the temperature difference that needs to be ensured (you count the difference between the “starting temperature” from which you will begin to warm the air to the one you want to have in the room);
  • Kt - thermal conductivity coefficient of walls, floor and ceiling. With good insulation from 1 to 2; with poor thermal insulation from 3 to 4; with excellent insulation from 0.6 to 1.
  • 860 - kilocalories per 1 kW of heat.

It's easy to calculate. Let's give an example. A gas heat gun will heat a garage measuring 5 * 3.5 m, with a ceiling height of 3 m. The walls are one and a half bricks long, only metal gates are insulated. It is planned to increase the temperature from -10°C to +20°C. Substituting the initial data into the formula, we get:

  • Room volume V = 5 * 3.5 * 3 = 52.5 cubic meters;
  • dT - 30°C (20-(-10) = 30);
  • Let's take Kt 2.5, since a wall of one and a half bricks is very weak thermal insulation;
  • P = (52.5 * 30 * 2.5)/860 = 4.6 kW.

    Table by which you can choose the power of a gas heat gun

In total, we found that this room could be heated by a 4.6 kW heat gun. But heating will last at least an hour - that’s how the formula is built. If you want to reduce the time, the power must be increased proportionally. If the time is halved (in 30 minutes), we multiply the power by two; to warm up in a quarter of an hour (15 minutes), the found power must be multiplied by 4:

  • 9.2 kW will be warmed up in 30 minutes;
  • in 15 minutes - 18.4 kW.

The above calculation is approximate, but it allows you to estimate the required parameters. For those who don’t like to count, there are tables in which everything has already been calculated. But they are given “on average” without taking into account the characteristics of your buildings. You will have to take into account the necessary parameters yourself, choosing from the proposed “fork” of capacities.

The best budget direct heating gas heat guns up to 6,000 rubles

An excellent option for a heat gun can also be found in the budget segment. Below are the best gas heat guns, the pros and cons of each model and customer reviews of them, which will help you choose the best option at an affordable price. The review will also help you decide whether it’s worth buying; all you have to do is choose where to buy.

  • Short power cable.

Irina G.:

Lightweight, which means comfortable, hands practically do not strain. There are very strange characters who take some 10-kilogram bandura like the Master with 30 kW to pull Khrushchev buildings, where the square footage of the room rarely exceeds 20 square meters, i.e. its power is not used even by 2/3. Why constantly carry extra weight is not entirely clear.

We often use it as a fan for warehouse ventilation. The gun is safe; if the flame accidentally goes out, the gas supply stops immediately.

How to make a heat gun with your own hands

If necessary, such a device can be “built” independently. This product can be used to heat a basement, garage, or cellar. The process is not as complicated as it seems:

  1. Two cases are made - one will be on top, the second will be on the bottom. The lower one will act as a fuel tank. The material itself should not be very thermally conductive, which will protect the case from heating. Some craftsmen also cover the fuel tank with high-quality insulation.
  2. The housing for the heat gun is located directly above the fuel tank. It houses a pump, a fan, a combustion chamber and an injector (if we are talking about a diesel version).
  3. For the fuel tank, you should choose a thick metal pipe. The instrument body itself cannot be supported on it (it would be better if the distance between them is 20 cm).
  4. A fuel filter must be installed between the two blocks. It will be connected to the tank by a metal tube, the diameter of which is half the size of the gun body. In orientation, it is in the middle of the device - it is with its help that decay products will come out.
  5. The process occurs as follows: fuel enters the nozzle, after which ignition occurs. The combustion process takes place in the direct combustion chamber. The fuel itself is ignited in a metal tube.

So, if you wish, you can make a heat gun with your own hands, but you need to understand the features of its design. The big advantage in this case will be that it will be easy for the master to repair such a creation on his own.

This gun turned out to be the most powerful of all that were used. And the most durable: we have been dragging it around the cottages for three years to dry the walls during finishing, and the body is intact and undamaged. Plus, we regulate the gas supply, which results in good savings on fuel. The equipment includes everything, we only buy gas cylinders.

Criterias of choice

Power is far from the only parameter that determines the choice. A gas heat gun still has a sufficient number of characteristics that are worth paying attention to.

We have a wide variety of gas guns

Protective functions

Open fire and gas are a dangerous combination. In the case of a gas heat gun, there is also the possibility of carbon monoxide poisoning. So additional security measures are not superfluous. Here are the protective mechanisms this equipment may have:

  • Protection of the electric motor from overheating. The temperature of the fan motor is monitored. When critical values are reached, the gas is shut off. Restarting is possible only after the engine has cooled down.
  • Flame control. If there is no flame on the burner, the gas supply valve closes.
  • Protection against gas leaks. There is an atmospheric air analyzer. If the CO content is exceeded or the amount of oxygen is insufficient, the equipment is switched off.
  • Rollover control. When the position changes, the gas supply is cut off. So, even if the heat gun falls, a fire is unlikely.

The flame must be controlled.
The only thing that may raise doubts is air control. Since the sensor is built-in, the state directly near the device is analyzed, which can distort the real data. Therefore, it is better to have a separate detector. Detectors (sensors) are inexpensive and can be programmed.

Performance characteristics

Power is far from the only parameter that characterizes the operation of gas heat guns. There are a few more that are simply necessary to understand how efficiently the unit will work.

  • Maximum air exchange (performance). Shows how much air the gun pumps through itself per unit of time. The air volume per minute or per hour can be indicated. Typically, the more powerful the gun, the more air it “drives” through itself.
  • Power consumption. The fan must run constantly, so it is advisable to have a backup power supply (at least a battery). The power consumption of household models does not exceed 120 W, so a large battery capacity is not required.
  • The permissible pressure of liquefied gas is from 0.3 to 0.1 Atm. The lower the permissible pressure, the more fully the gas will be consumed. In general, this characteristic is needed to configure the gearbox.

    There are many criteria that determine convenience

  • Fuel consumption. Directly depends on power. The more productive the gun, the more liquefied gas it “eats”. This parameter varies from 0.74 to 3.3 liters of fuel per hour. When using powerful devices, it is better to combine several cylinders into one system. This will also solve the problem of incomplete production of the liquid gas fraction.
  • Ignition system. During the start, the gas must be ignited. Manual ignition. Bring the splinter to the cannon exit and the gas will ignite. But this is far from the best option, since a certain amount of gas enters the room.
  • Piezoelectric. First, press the “ignition” button, then open the gas, which ignites from a spark.
  • Electronic. The most comfortable. Everything is done by itself - a spark is generated and gas is supplied. But these are models with electronic control and monitoring, and they cost a lot. Moreover, they are almost not represented here.

    You need to be careful with equipment

  • Connection parameters. Also an important part.
      Gas hose length. If it’s more than a meter, that’s already luck.
  • Power cable length. You can use a carrier, but a long electrical cable is a sign of quality.
  • Hose connection thread. If you have to change/modify something, this may be important.
  • Length of connecting fitting. It should be long enough so that the hose can be tightened with a clamp (25 mm is the optimal size).
  • As you can see, there are quite a few options. Not all are obvious, some can be missed, but in general, pay attention to them.

    Ease of use

    Despite the fact that outwardly one heat gas gun is practically no different from another, some are convenient to use, others are not. This can be tracked using the following criteria.

    • Power adjustment. It is convenient when there are at least three power levels. You can heat it up at maximum, and maintain the temperature at lower settings.
    • Thermostat or thermostat. Monitors the air temperature and turns off the unit when it reaches the set temperature. This is not so important if you are constantly indoors. But it is necessary if you periodically leave, and for an extended period of time.

      May be a thermostat or thermostat (mechanical)

    • Noise level. In general, a gas heat gun is a noisy device. But some “roar”, others only “make noise”. So there really is a difference.
    • Tilt adjustment. A convenient option that, unfortunately, is rarely present.

    Once again, we draw your attention to the fact that a gas heat gun is intended for rooms in which people are not constantly present. With sufficient power, it will very quickly heat the air even in a frozen room. But after turning it off, it cools down just as quickly: only the air heated up, and not the walls and other enclosing structures. However, as a means of rapid heating, it is very effective (although it consumes a lot of fuel).

    The best infrared gas heat gun

    Caiman VAL6 GN5 (42.2 kW)

    Caiman VAL6 GN5 (42.2 kW)
    Caiman VAL6 GN5 is an infrared heat gun powered by natural gas.     • voltage: 220/230 V;
    • HxWxT: 84x90x90 cm;
    • weight: 49 kg.

    Pros:

    • Efficiency.
    • Efficiency reaches 100%.
    • Long service life.
    • Air thermostat.
    • Safety system.
    • Does not emit odor or smoke.
    • Possibility to adjust the radiation angle up to 90 degrees.

    Minuses:

    • High price.

    Denis:

    An excellent gun in all aspects. The best choice of gas heat gun. Very powerful and convenient model. I recommend.

    Design and principle of operation

    As part of our reviews, we have already looked at high-performance heat guns that run on liquid fuel. They have high efficiency, but are sources of unpleasant odors, since the fuel in them does not burn 100%. An alternative to them are gas units running on natural or liquefied gas (most often liquefied gas is used - a little later we will explain what this is connected with).

    A gas gun for heating rooms is a relatively simple unit in terms of internal arrangement, using gas for its power supply. By burning the incoming fuel, this unit generates a large amount of heat, which is sent into the room using a powerful fan. The heart of the device is a burner with an ignition system - simple piezoelectric elements and electric ignition systems with electrodes are used here.

    The body of a gas heat gun is made of durable metal, since during operation its surface becomes very hot.

    The device of a gas gun is as follows:

    • Thermostat – provides temperature control;
    • Fan - it provides the burner with oxygen and sends heat to the heated rooms;
    • Control system - includes a thermostat and a start button;
    • Burner is a module equipped with a nozzle and providing the creation of a flame torch.

    Some models of gas heat guns also contain heat exchangers - they serve to safely transfer heat to heated buildings and rooms.

    A gas gun cannot work without electricity, since its essence is to “shoot” heat under high pressure, characterized by high productivity. Without a fan, it would turn into a very simple burner, which cannot boast of high efficiency. Therefore, it is almost impossible to find units that can operate in a completely autonomous mode - a power source is required here.

    The gas heat gun is enclosed in a durable metal casing and its appearance really resembles some kind of weapon that fires cannonballs. Only instead of cannonballs, hot air flies out of its mouth. Due to the built-in fan, heated air masses are evenly distributed throughout the heated volume. Models with a thermostat monitor the temperature generated, providing precise temperature control.

    Onboard thermostats in gas heat guns monitor the temperature of the intake air - when a predetermined threshold is reached, the burner is temporarily turned off.

    To power gas heat guns for residential premises, two types of fuel are used - main gas or liquefied gas from a cylinder. In the first case, everything is not so simple, because to connect to the highway you need permission. Therefore, liquefied fuel is most often used to power the units. The gas cylinder for a heat gun is the same cylinder that is used in conjunction with conventional kitchen stoves. Its volume is not limited in any way; connection to the heat guns is carried out through a reducer to reduce the pressure.

    How to connect and use a gas heat gun

    First of all, it would be useful to study the instructions, as it contains all the nuances of connection and use. It is recommended to carry out assembly based on the manufacturer's instructions in the instructions. Here are a few situations in which it is prohibited to turn on a gas heat gun:

    • when there is a concentration of large amounts of dust in the air;
    • in the presence of explosive vapors;
    • when the outlet is blocked by any obstacle.

    When turning it on, it is first important to check the ventilation of the room and the presence of oxygen in it. Next, you need to check the tightness of the connection with the gas cylinder, for example, you can use a soap solution. Ignition occurs in strict sequence. First of all, the main switch must be pressed, which will cause the engine and fan to start. Next, you need to press and hold the gas valve button and press the ignition button several times. When a fire starts, the button must be held for another 15–20 seconds, and then gradually released.
