While the Ryzen 9 3900X isn't head and shoulders above other Ryzen 3000s, it beats every game we tested. The high average frame rate and smoothest gameplay are partly thanks to the 72 MB Gamecache. Its 4.6 GHz clock speed also helps in simple games, such as CS:GO.
Unfortunately, our suite of tests showed that many modern games don't use more than eight cores, and older video games barely load more than four. The workload performance of this twelve-core processor is unmatched in this price segment. If you not only play, but also work on a PC, this processor is for you. The extra cores come in handy if you want to game and stream from the same computer.
If you need a computer solely for gaming, buy a Ryzen 5 3600. With the money you save, it is better to invest in RAM or a video card.
A good choice is AMD Ryzen 7 3700X
With 8 cores and 16 threads, the Ryzen 7 3700X and 3800X sit between the two aforementioned processors. With overclocked frequencies of 4.4 GHz and 4.5 GHz, respectively, apart from the $70 difference in cost, there are no significant differences between the two processors.
The graphs show that these processors differ from the cheap six-core 3600 and 3600X, but with only a 6% lead in GTA V and a 5% win in The Witcher 3. Complex open-world games at high graphics settings hardly benefit from two additional cores. In games like DOTA 2 and Overwatch alone, we see average framerate improvements of 6% and 12% respectively, while DOTA sees significant increases in minimum 1% and 0.1% FPS, making the game run much smoother. With nearly identical performance (the graphs show otherwise the difference is due to differences in benchmarks), there's little reason to buy the 3800X when the 3700X is $70 cheaper.
It's better to spend that $70 on a graphics card with better cooling or RAM. Only Overwatch and DOTA 2 players, or fans of single-player open-world games like The Witcher 3 and GTA V, we recommend buying the 3700X over the significantly cheaper Ryzen 5 3600.

For half the price of the 3900X, the AMD Ryzen 3600 performs very well in games. With the weakest performance of all the Ryzen 3000 processors, it produced the same results in graphics-heavy games like Monster Hunter World and Shadow of the Tomb Raider.
