Which thermos is better to choose for tea - expert advice

One of the main rules for winter fishing, hiking and other cold weather activities is: always take a thermos with a hot drink. Tea will not only help you cheer up, but will also start heat exchange processes in the body. However, in order to keep your drink hot for as long as possible, you need to understand how to choose a thermos correctly, what characteristics and design solutions to pay attention to. In addition, you need to take into account the division of the entire range of thermoses into separate categories. A new article from Trophy experts is designed to help you understand all the intricacies.

What are thermoses?

When choosing a thermos, you should start with the purpose for which you are buying this household utensil. Depending on their purpose, thermoses are:

  • for drinks - in this case, the options are presented in the form of a tall vessel with a narrow neck or in the form of a mug; the first option is more practical for traveling and long trips;
  • for food it is a cylinder, but lower than a standard thermos. There are also options in the form of boxes, mini-pots, and tanks.

When choosing a thermos, be sure to think about what exactly you plan to transport in it, since the volume of the dish and its purpose depend on this.

Types of thermoses

The design of any device of this type has a flask with double walls. The shape varies depending on the purpose of the dish. Most of the options are similar, but there are still variations. There are thermoses for tea, coffee, and separate models for food: soups or cereals. There are options made of plastic or a combination of these materials; steel models are considered more reliable.

Universal models

The correct universal model has a wide neck and a universal-type lid. To get food you need to unscrew the lid, for a drink you just need to open the cap. This option is often presented in excellent volume and also maintains the temperature for a long time. There are lids made of glass or metal.

Bullet

Cylindrical shape that resembles a bullet. Advantages: compact size, ideal for carrying in a bag or backpack. Many companies that produce travel accessories specialize in the production of this type of thermos.

Pneumatic pump

A wide vessel, which is equipped with a large lid with a pump, is an element whose hose reaches to the very bottom. A distinctive feature of this device is that you do not need to remove the lid to pour the drink. If you want to choose a practical, yet roomy thermos, pay attention to this option. It retains heat for a long time and is easy to use.

Sudkovy

In this case, there are no models with a wide neck, since this is a design that can accommodate up to 3 plastic containers. This option is optimal if you need to store a multi-course meal in one place.

Thermal mugs and thermal bottles

The optimal solution for sports fans or frequent travelers, since you can drink on the go, just press the button located on the body.

Tables and graphs

It is quite interesting to observe in the diagrams how the temperature of the liquid in the thermos decreases over time. I am attaching two graphs of temperature loss in tests. The first graph shows how the temperature decreased when measured 1, 3, 6 and 10 hours after pouring boiling water into thermoses.

The second graph also shows a decrease in temperature. This time, measurements after pouring were carried out only twice: after 12 and 24 hours.

As a result of the tests, the Tiger MHK-A200 XC thermos won. I became interested in what contributed to the victory and I decided to cut it. But it was a shame to saw a two-liter thermos, so I found a liter equivalent and sawed it lengthwise. And this is what was discovered:

Between the body and the wall of the stainless steel flask there is a layer of copper foil. That is, in addition to vacuum sealing, like other thermoses, Tiger supplemented its thermoses with thermoreflective foil. The idea worked!

How to choose the right quality thermos

Which thermos to choose - stainless steel or plastic, what volume, what are the features of a particular model and other questions arise in the process of choosing this kitchen device. Next, we will look at the key criteria that you should pay attention to when choosing a product.

By volume

To choose a quality thermos, you first need to decide how much volume you need. The smallest option is 250 ml; there are models with a volume of up to 40 liters.

  • 200 ml to 1 liter are small models;
  • 1–2 liters - universal, standard options;
  • from 3 liters - these are large-capacity.

About 1 liter can be used for 1-2 people. If you are planning a hike with your family or company, then it is better to buy models from 2 liters.

According to the materials of the flask and body

Most often, stainless steel and plastic are used for the body. But metal is better, it is stronger and more durable, and also more resistant to external influences. Plastic is the best option for a food thermos that you plan to take to work. In this case, the likelihood of external influence on the container is reduced.

Flask material:

  • plastic is rarely used, advantages are affordable price and light weight, disadvantages are low heat conductivity;
  • glass - easy to clean and hygienic, the bulb is replaced if a crack appears;
  • steel is the optimal solution for those who buy a container for an active lifestyle.

Ability to retain heat

There are no standards regarding this indicator, so heat retention data varies depending on the manufacturer and model. According to user reviews, among domestic manufacturers, the best products are those from the Arctic company.

Please note that the heat retention rate is influenced by what technologies are used by the manufacturer, as well as the quality of the materials used. The duration of temperature retention is affected by:

  • neck diameter, the narrower the better;
  • type of cover, options with a button are inferior to models with threads;
  • The material of the flask, when the lid is closed, glass keeps heat for up to 12 hours, metal - about 6-8 hours.

For odor insulation

The company’s description does not indicate this point, but it is very important for the comfortable operation of the kitchen device. Here you need to understand that steel models are able to absorb and retain odors. So it is better not to store milk and other dairy products, sour juices and drinks with a very strong aroma. Glass options are considered the optimal solution for isolating odors, since such models do not absorb aromas at all, but the key disadvantage is the fragility of the flask.

By shape and design

The shape depends on the purpose of the dish. Mugs or higher models are more intended for drinks, deep, cylindrical, but low options are for transporting food. Regarding design: here manufacturers offer different colors and shapes. There are options with handles, which increases comfort during operation. There are rubberized inserts that reduce slipping; such models are easier to hold in your hand.

Cork

Since the lid determines how much heat will be lost, special attention must be paid to this detail.

  1. The lid is the most popular method and is used in conjunction with an additional stopper. In models with an additional stopper, the lid is an alternative to a cup.
  2. Pump plugs often include a special valve for supplying fluid and an air pump. They are large in size, but retain heat for a long time.
  3. Plugs with a valve are considered more practical to use. And to pour a drink, you don’t need to unscrew the lid. When you press the button, tea or coffee comes out, thereby reducing heat loss.
  4. A cork with a tongue is used by manufacturers in sports versions and thermal mugs.

Which thermos should you choose - glass or metal? It all depends on the purpose of the vessel, the goals set for it and personal preferences.

Additional functions

In this case, we are talking about more modern, advanced models, in which there is a special sieve on the flask for brewing, or there is a valve for releasing steam, which is often found in options for first and second courses. You will have to pay extra for additional features; accordingly, the price of such goods increases.

Tips for choosing the right model

In order to choose the right thermos, you must consider the following recommendations:

  • Purpose and shape. The shape is selected based on the purpose for which the product will be used. For drinks, models in the shape of a cylinder with a narrow neck are most often chosen. Containers and barrels with a wide neck are suitable for food. This item is easy to wash and the food does not lose its shape.
  • Temperature. Not all users know that the temperature regime of thermoses may also differ. For drinks, dishes can remain warm for up to 12 hours. Food items retain heat for up to 6 hours.
  • Dimensions. For food, they can be in volume from 0.25 grams to 2.5 kg or more, depending on the number of people who will use the product;
  • Lid. The stopper can be rotating or in the shape of a button. Rotating ones retain heat for a long period. However, the button is more convenient, especially when traveling.

When choosing a suitable model, preference should be given to proven brands that have repeatedly proven their quality.

Rating of the best thermoses

To understand which thermos to choose, it is not enough to study the criteria for choosing a given dish. It is necessary to become familiar with existing manufacturers and types of products. Next, we will look at the most popular models from different brands.

Testing methodology

The first test simulated frequent use of a thermos: the temperature was measured immediately after pouring boiling water into the dishes.
The following measurements were taken after 1, 3, 6, 10 hours. All data was entered into a table, which can be seen at the end of the material. The second test simulates a situation where a thermos must keep warm for a long time. Therefore, only three temperature measurements were taken: at the moment of pouring boiling water, after 12 and after 24 hours. Thus, I received data on how much a thermos can maintain the temperature of a liquid over a 24-hour period.

All thermoses were tested under the same conditions at a temperature of about 0 degrees without wind.

What's interesting is that most of the heat loss occurs through the plug. As an example, I will give the following photo

And I start testing and immediately distribute the thermoses to places.

17th place Amet “Tourist “K”

Design: ☻☻☻☻☻☻☻ Temperature: ☻☻☻ Ergonomics: ☻☻☻☻☻ Price: 1230 RUR

An interesting example of Russian production - a thermos made in the Chelyabinsk region. Attracts with its design and brutality. The only such wide thermos with a volume of only 1 liter. The thermos has folding handles and side “legs” that prevent it from rolling away from a horizontal surface. A large mug is, on the one hand, convenient, and on the other hand, the tea cools down faster. The neck is not very wide, so it will not be possible to transport food. Opening the plug is quite problematic. But there are fastenings for any strap to carry a thermos on your shoulder. Unfortunately, the thermos showed very poor results in terms of heat preservation.

+

Brutal design, stops against rolling off the table, large mug-lid
-
Large heat losses, the lid is difficult to unscrew

16th place Thermos FBB-1000

Design: ☻☻☻☻☻☻☻☻☻ Temperature: ☻☻☻☻☻☻ Ergonomics: ☻☻☻☻☻ Price: 5000 RUR

One of the most stylish thermoses. The photo, perhaps, does not convey the attractive color that this thermos has. All the girls who saw the collection of thermoses for dough noted this thermos as one of the most attractive. There is only one small mug lid - this is not surprising, since the thermos is one-liter. The mechanism for accessing water in the lid is very interesting. Pressing one button opens the valve. Pressing the valve closes it - you can even do it with one hand. The narrow neck reduces heat loss, and the cap is easy to unscrew. Unfortunately, the high cost reduces all the possibilities of the thermos to nothing.

+

Stylish design, convenient mechanism for accessing water
-
High price, inability to attach to a strap

15th place VOLUM, IKEA

Design: ☻☻☻☻☻☻ Temperature: ☻☻☻ Ergonomics: ☻☻☻☻☻ Price: 599 RUR

The thermos is very popular among visitors to IKEA stores. It attracts, first of all, with its low price - where else can you find a thermos for less than 600 rubles? But that's where its advantages end. Heat loss is extremely high - second place from the bottom. There is no way to attach it to a belt. And in terms of dimensions, it overtook the Thermos FBB-1000, although they have the same capacity. What’s nice is that you can pour water without completely opening the thermos, and all thanks to special grooves on the sides of the stopper. There are arrows opposite the grooves to prevent liquid from spilling on the sides. During the day, in the second test, the thermos lost almost 60 degrees, that is, the water was slightly warm. In general, the choice is only for the price.

+

Low price, ease of use
-
High heat loss, large dimensions

14th place TM “Pathfinder” PF-TM-03

Design: ☻☻☻☻☻☻ Temperature: ☻☻☻☻☻ Ergonomics: ☻☻☻☻ Price: 990 RUR

This thermos with its color reminded me of the front door. But there it was done to increase vandal resistance, but here it is used only for decorative purposes. The thermos is a cylinder, without rounded ends. The mug lid is without a handle, and the stopper is made similarly to the previous model, that is, with grooves on the sides for air and liquid access - you can pour liquid without completely unscrewing the lid. The throat is relatively wide, but the volume is such that you can mainly carry only liquid there. As for heat loss, the thermos was approximately in the middle of all models. Solid average.

+

Nice price, average heat loss, ease of operation
-
“Door” painting, cylinder with rectangular ends

13th place Stanley Classic Vacuum Insulated Bottle

Design: ☻☻☻☻☻☻☻☻ Temperature: ☻☻☻☻ Ergonomics: ☻☻☻☻☻☻ Price: 3180 RUR

This thermos stands out from others primarily because of its appearance. It immediately becomes clear that this is not just another creation, but something special. Both the appearance and functionality are somewhat different: take at least the handle, which on the brackets can be pressed against the body, or can move away for a comfortable grip on the handle. True, the handle tends to fold when you pour from a full thermos into a cup. The cup is quite large and noticeable - also a plus. Reliable coating with hammer enamel will protect the thermos during frequent travel. True, in tests for heat loss, the thermos was firmly in 13th place. And the price for 1 liter of container is more than 3 thousand rubles - this is a lot. It is all the more surprising that a regular cork with grooves along the edges was used - the simplest solution was used in an expensive thermos.

+

Distinctive design, good hammer enamel coating

The handle tends to fold when pouring

12th place Nova Tour “Twist 1000”

Design: ☻☻☻☻☻☻☻ Temperature: ☻☻☻☻☻ Ergonomics: ☻☻☻☻☻ Price: 1339 RUR

When I picked up this thermos for the first time, I immediately noticed how pleasant the non-slip coating was to my hand. The trouble is that when tested in the cold, it turned out that this coating hardens and becomes completely non-plastic. However, the thermos is worthy of attention: a small cup is just enough to drink without letting the drink go cold. The narrow neck is closed with a stopper with a classic “button-ring” mechanism for accessing water - understandable even to those who see such a thermos for the first time. As for heat loss, in the 10-hour test the thermos was in 9th place, but in the daily test it was already in 15th place. So it’s worth taking it for small “outings”. However, the price is not bad for such a thermos.

+

Nice design, silicone non-slip coating, narrow neck, classic and reliable mechanism for accessing water
-
The non-slip coating hardens in the cold, the thermos has large daily heat losses

11th place Biosteel NBP-1000

Design: ☻☻☻☻☻☻☻ Temperature: ☻☻☻☻☻ Ergonomics: ☻☻☻☻☻☻ Price: 1071 RUR

A very nice thermos both in terms of design and ergonomics. It is worth noting that liter thermoses rarely have a second bowl in addition to the mug. The orange color of both will prevent them from getting lost in the snow or ground. Manufacturers are running out of stars from the sky, so we have a good workhorse: Classic body shape, classic mechanism for accessing water - everything has been perfected over generations. It’s a pity that there is no provision for attaching a shoulder strap, but the thermos takes up less space in the backpack. In temperature tests, the thermos also ranked in the bottom five in both tests, so you shouldn’t expect miracles from it.

+

The bright color does not allow the lid and bowl to get lost, two cups included with a liter thermos
-
Not the best heat saving indicators

10th place Tramp EKS-027

Design: ☻☻☻☻☻☻☻ Temperature: ☻☻☻☻☻☻ Ergonomics: ☻☻☻☻☻☻ Price: 1400 RUR

The name of this thermos is interesting - I have to admit, it’s attractive. As for the design, it is classic: black and silver. The coating looks strong, perhaps not paint, but enamel. The screw cap consists of two parts: a larger mug and a smaller one. At the same time, the second cup is not made in the form of a separate bowl, so it will not get lost when opening. Access to water without any mechanics: a classic plug with two grooves on the sides. Special arrows show where the liquid will flow from, so as not to get burned. In heat loss tests, the thermos held up well: 6th and 4th place for the 10-hour and 12-hour tests, respectively. And the price is good.

+

Good design, two cups with a liter thermos, good temperature indicators
-
Stopper without mechanics, there is no way to hang the thermos on a belt

9th place "Arctic" 205-2000

Design: ☻☻☻☻☻☻☻ Temperature: ☻☻☻☻☻☻ Ergonomics: ☻☻☻☻☻☻☻ Price: 2365 RUR

Above the 10th place, thermoses with a capacity of two liters began to appear. This is partly explained by the fact that they store heat better, if only because more hot liquid is poured into them. True, the area of heat dissipation increases. The thermos has a plastic folding handle and special protrusions that prevent the thermos from rolling on a horizontal surface. The set includes a cup and a bowl, and the lid is removed after turning 45 degrees. To access the water, the central part of the plug is unscrewed. By the way, it is quite difficult to unscrew it. The wide neck allows you to transport not only liquids, but, for example, soup. It is possible to attach a belt, but the fastenings are plastic and unique. Excellent temperature performance - second place in both tests.

+

Two liquid containers, wide mouth, anti-rolling mechanism, folding handle, excellent temperature performance
-
Tight-unscrew cap, unique "disposable" belt fastening mechanism

8th place Nova Tour “Big Ben 2000”

Design: ☻☻☻☻☻☻☻ Temperature: ☻☻☻☻☻☻ Ergonomics: ☻☻☻☻☻☻☻ Price: 2490 RUR

Almost a twin of the previous model. The thermos, like the “Arctic” 205-2000, has a plastic folding handle and stops for laying on a horizontal surface. You can also attach a belt for carrying on the shoulder, but, again, it has its own unique plastic fastenings, which are not sold on every corner. But when opening the lid, the difference is immediately noticeable - you need to make a full turn to remove the mug lid. There is also a bowl underneath for a second person. The mechanism for accessing water is identical to the previous thermos - unscrewing the cap is just as difficult. The only difference is noticeable in the temperature tests: it did not rise above 7th place.

+

Two containers for liquids, wide mouth, anti-roll mechanism, folding handle, excellent temperature performance
-
Tight-unscrew cap, unique "disposable" belt fastening mechanism, lid opening by rotating 360 degrees.

7th place Thermos FDH-2005

Design: ☻☻☻☻☻☻☻ Temperature: ☻☻☻☻☻☻☻☻ Ergonomics: ☻☻☻☻☻☻☻ Price: 5950 RUR

You might think that this thermos is a clone of the previous two. Outwardly, they are somewhat similar: a folding plastic handle and again unique shoulder strap mounts. There is also a stop to prevent the thermos from rolling on a horizontal surface. But after removing the lid, metamorphosis begins. The cork is noticeably different from previous models. A unique and very interesting access to water: first you need to remove the metal pin, then press the button and the hinged lid will give access to the contents. Moreover, the manufacturer has provided a mechanism that facilitates the smooth flow of water: there is a special air channel on the back of the plug. Such care is pleasant, but the check cannot be opened without removing gloves. By the way, the cap can be unscrewed quite simply, and the wide neck will allow you to carry more than just liquid with you.

+

Good performance in temperature tests, it is convenient to pour liquid without “gurgles”, wide neck
-
it is almost impossible to remove the pin with gloves, high price

6th place Biostal NGP-2000P

Design: ☻☻☻☻☻☻☻ Temperature: ☻☻☻☻☻☻ Ergonomics: ☻☻☻☻☻☻☻ Price: 1674 RUR

But this is a direct clone of the thermoses that ended up in 8th and 9th place, but with a different name. It’s not clear who stole the design from whom, but this thermos turned out to be a little more heat-resistant. Although it was a “photo finish”, when the difference in final temperatures differed by less than a degree, Biostal NGP-2000P overtook its competitors in price. So, we have a two-liter thermos with a folding plastic handle and a shoulder strap with plastic fasteners. A cup and bowl will allow two people to drink tea. The wide neck will allow you to transport not only liquids, and the plug is quite tight, as before. To open the lid, you need to make a full rotation.

+

Two containers for liquids, wide neck, anti-roll mechanism, folding handle, excellent temperature performance, low price
-
Tight-unscrew cap, unique “disposable” belt fastening mechanism, lid opening by rotating 360 degrees.

5th place Kovea KDW-1000 WT

Design: ☻☻☻☻☻☻☻☻ Temperature: ☻☻☻☻☻ Ergonomics: ☻☻☻☻☻☻☻ Price: 1270 RUR

Surprisingly, several one-liter thermoses crept into the top five winners. Let's start with Kovea KDW-1000 WT. It immediately stands out from the rest because of its own case. This is not just a case with a zipper, but a foil case with a handle. That is, it is designed to increase the time the temperature is maintained in a thermos. The trick was a success and the measurement results are quite interesting. And this only had a good effect on the design and ergonomics. The thermos has one mug cup and a narrow neck, so heat loss is small. The mechanism for accessing water has already been encountered and is made in the form of a valve with a button and a closing ring. Low price, good performance and the Kovea KDW-1000 WT thermos is among the top five winners.

+

Original and convenient foil case, narrow neck, reliable mechanism for accessing water
-
Without the case, temperature tests would have been worse

4th place Zojirushi SJ-SD10-XA

Design: ☻☻☻☻☻☻☻☻☻☻ Temperature: ☻☻☻☻☻☻ Ergonomics: ☻☻☻☻☻☻☻☻☻☻ Price: 3833 RUR

A curious name from the manufacturer and an equally attractive design. The thermos immediately stands out on the store shelf and in the hands of the owner. Let's start with ergonomics: a folding rubberized handle that does not slip in your hands and does not take up space during transportation. There are small stops to prevent the thermos from rolling on the table. We open the glass lid and see an interesting mechanism for accessing water. The valve opens by pressing the red button, while the opening is extremely small, which keeps the contents warm longer. The valve closes with another button or when covered with a cup. But what struck me most was the Teflon coating on the inside of the flask - it is very easy to clean, although doctors have doubts about Teflon. Apparently, this is why the price is noticeably different from other liter models. But the temperature indicators are very good.

+

Excellent design, excellent ergonomics, easy access to water, easy-to-clean Teflon coating, good temperature performance
-
Price, questionable safety of Teflon

3rd place Zojirushi SF-CC20-XA

Design: ☻☻☻☻☻☻☻☻☻☻ Temperature: ☻☻☻☻☻☻ Ergonomics: ☻☻☻☻☻☻☻☻☻☻ Price: 5760 RUR

The Zojirushi SF-CC20-XA two-liter thermos deservedly took third place in our test. Here we see the previous model at the appropriate scale. A large thermos with an elastic folding handle and the ability to be worn on a belt. By the way, the fastenings allow you to use absolutely any belt of suitable width. The mug and bowl are also quite large. You can pour a drink without opening the button thanks to the “proprietary” mechanism with two buttons. By the way, the valve closes if you simply put the mug on the thermos. The inside of the flask is coated with Teflon, and the neck is wide enough to carry not only drinks, but also borscht. In temperature tests, this thermos performed as expected. The only disappointment is the high price, but sometimes you don’t mind spending any money for such goodies.

+

Excellent design, excellent ergonomics, easy access to water, easy-to-clean Teflon coating, good temperature performance
-
Price, questionable safety of Teflon

2nd place “Arctic” 109-1000M

Design: ☻☻☻☻☻☻☻☻☻☻ Temperature: ☻☻☻☻☻☻ Ergonomics: ☻☻☻☻☻☻☻☻☻ Price: 2042 RUR

This thermos looks "tourist". I don’t know why, but when looking at him, just such an association emerges. The thermos is covered with hammer enamel, resistant to chips. The rubberized handle is pleasant to the touch and does not slip in the hand. It is immediately noticeable that the lid consists of two parts - these are cups with handles, which is really convenient. The plug does not have any mechanics, just grooves on the sides, allowing you to pour liquid without unscrewing it completely. Interestingly, the bottom of the thermos also twists and there is a container with two zones for bulk products: tea and sugar, for example. Attention to detail deserves second place. It's a pity that there is no strap holder. Otherwise, the thermos really deserves second place.

+

Good design, well-thought-out ergonomics, good temperature performance, affordable price
-
No belt holder

1st place Tiger MHK-A200 XC

Design: ☻☻☻☻☻☻☻☻☻ Temperature: ☻☻☻☻☻☻☻☻☻☻ Ergonomics: ☻☻☻☻☻☻☻☻☻☻ Price: 5085 RUR

The first place was taken by a thermos named Tiger or Tiger MHK-A200 XC. Let's start with an external inspection: a rather interesting platform into which two handles are folded: this mechanism is somewhat reminiscent of an Amet thermos. On the opposite side there is a pair of plastic feet to prevent the thermos from rolling on a horizontal surface. The presence of a handle on the lid-mug immediately draws attention. The lid itself opens after turning 45 degrees - this is much more convenient than making a full turn. In addition to the mug there is a bowl. To pour liquid, just press the button, and you can close the valve by pressing the ring. The stopper is very wide, since the neck is made almost the entire width of the flask. That is why it is convenient to carry not only drinks, but also food. There are “ears” on the sides for attaching a strap - this is the only thermos that is in an upright position when transported on a shoulder strap. Well, in conclusion, it should be noted that the Tiger MHK-A200 XC won all temperature tests.

Excellent ergonomics, nice design, comfortable shoulder strap, cup with handle, wide neck, excellent performance in temperature tests

Tips for thermos owners:

1. In order for the thermos to maintain its temperature longer, the flask must first be warmed up. That is, fill it with boiling water (you can do it completely), let it sit for a couple of minutes, and then fill it with finishing boiling water. This way you won’t waste precious heat to warm up the flask. 2. Frequent opening of the cap leads to faster cooling of the contents. 3. You will drink a hot drink longer from a small mug than from a large one. 4. The large neck of the thermos will allow you to take hot food with you, such as soup. 5. If the thermos is not planned to be opened often, then it can be insulated - this will extend the cooling time of the contents.

What you shouldn't buy

Thermos Stainless King 2 l (68 oz.)

Thermos Stainless King thermos, 2 liters (68 oz), in “stainless steel” color
Thermos is the same brand with which all other thermoses began to be called. The name of the model speaks for itself, as well as the Stainless King.

The model is available in several colors, but only the unpainted one is the cheapest and starts at $31 + shipping on Amazon. Unfortunately, in the Russian Federation this model is offered only in 1.2 liter capacity. The two-liter version of the King series thermos is offered (at least now) only in black according to https://www.thermos.ru/.

The Stainless King thermos is made using materials:

  • Stainless steel 18/8, food grade stainless steel;
  • Plastic without Bisphenol A (BPA free);

The Thermos Stainless King thermos has the following advantages:

  • Famous brand;
  • Can be washed in the dishwasher on the top shelf (top-rack dishwasher safe);
  • 15 year warranty (for 2 liter version);
  • The 2 liter model is available in 3 colors (stainless steel, black, blue);
  • 3 sizes for 0.5 l, 1.2 l and 2 l (in the Russian Federation only 1.2 l and 2 l);
  • Wide range of series;
  • Possibility to buy spare parts for a thermos (more on this below);

Possible disadvantages of the Stainless King thermos:

  • The Stainless King model without painting (stainless steel) has not been transferred to the Russian Federation;
  • Rattling handle;
  • The weak point seems to be the spot welding of the thermos handle fastening (however, there are no complaints about this in the reviews);
  • Painted versions may scratch easily;

We found spare parts for the old models of 1963 and 1974, but we couldn’t find spare parts for the Stainless King and Work Series models (below), so I had to contact the official representative office of Thermos in the Russian Federation (answer below).

How to use and care for a tea thermos

The service life depends on the correct use of the thermos. Rules for caring for the device if you plan to pour tea, coffee and other drinks:

  • timely washing;
  • ventilation;
  • thorough cleaning so that no tea leaves or coffee grounds remain inside.

Also make sure that the dishes do not fall on the floor and there are no strong impacts. Check the instructions to see if they are dishwasher safe. Carbonated drinks should not be poured into metal containers, as they accelerate the destruction of the material.

Advice on how to get rid of bad odor

When traveling for a long time, it is not always possible to clear the flask of food particles in a timely manner. As a result, an unpleasant odor appears. It is very difficult to eliminate musty smells with water. In order to use the thermos again, you need to pour 4 tablespoons of soda inside the flask. Pour boiling water over and leave for 2-3 hours. Then rinse several times with clean water.

You can also eliminate unpleasant odors by using vinegar. To clean the thermos, you need to pour 50 grams of vinegar into the flask and fill it with warm water. Close the lid and leave for an hour. After vinegar, the flask must be rinsed with detergent.

Types of thermoses based on body material

The thermos body can be made of plastic or metal.

Thermoses with metal body

The most successful option for use on a camping trip, long trips or fishing - it retains heat best and is not afraid of corrosion, mechanical damage or shock. The disadvantage is the increased weight of the product.

Thermoses with plastic body

You can take a plastic thermos with you for a walk, study or work. This is a lightweight thermal cookware, but the ability to maintain temperature is limited to a couple of hours. Thermal mugs are often made from plastic. Plastic thermoses, compared to metal ones, are distinguished by their low price.

Thermos Zojirushi SF-CC20XA

Appearance of Zojirushi SF-CC20XA thermos

The Dzojirusi thermos, this is how the name of the thermos manufacturer's company is read, is made using the following materials:

  • Stainless steel;
  • Plastic without Bisphenol A (BPA free);

On Amazon, the thermos is accompanied by “Tuff Sports Stainless Steel Travel Mug”, tuff in this case is apparently a variation of the adjective tough [tʌf] - harsh, hard, steep. Which obviously should evoke associations with the unusually durable and reliable properties of the thermos.

The advantages of a thermos include:

  • Included in the top 5 for the best temperature maintenance results, according to a test on ya.ru;
  • Wide neck (70mm), convenient to wash;
  • Removable stopper that can be washed in the dishwasher;
  • Hygienic coating of the flask, does not absorb odors;
  • Four sizes: 1.3 l, 1.5 l, 1.8 l and 2.0 l.
  • The drain valve closes automatically when the cup lid is put on;
  • An additional bowl, which also serves as an additional heat insulator;
  • Shoulder strap;
  • The plastic on the bottom and cup should protect against possible damage if dropped;
  • Smooth pouring, no bubbles;
  • Made in Thailand (the rest are all in China);

Possible disadvantages:

  • Warranty in the Russian Federation 2 years. However, in the USA/Canada the warranty is provided for 5 years;
  • The service life is stated to be 6 years;
  • The hygienic coating may peel off, which increases risks (there is a review on Amazon);
  • Possibility of damaging the Teflon coating with sharp pieces of ice (yes, all thermoses can be used for cold drinks);
  • Cannot be washed in a dishwasher (see Warranty card, page 2);
  • Do not pour salty soup or sour drinks (see Warranty card, page 1);

The main difference between the Zojirushi SF thermos and others is the use of a hygienic coating inside the flask, which helps to wash away plaque; thanks to this coating, it does not eat into the steel so much. Among other things, it is worth saying that the Dzojirushi company uses the term not Teflon, but fluorine-containing coating or hygienic coating.

By the way, about the use of Teflon coating and the dangers of Teflon. The Teflon coating releases harmful substances when heated to more than 200C degrees, which is not achievable under operating conditions of a thermos. Therefore, I think, imho, Tiger’s mention of the dangers of Teflon is dishonest marketing:

Fragment of the warranty card for 2016-2017 Tiger thermos

It’s good that Tiger isn’t writing about this now.

Regarding the warranty, I believe that you can rely on the five (5) year warranty provided in the USA/Canada as an indicator of the quality of the product.

Types of thermoses by stopper type

One of the most important parts of a thermos is the stopper. It happens:

  • pump-action;
  • with valve;
  • with tongue;
  • unscrewing.

With pump plug

The pump button is used in heavy, bulky thermos jugs, which are usually used at home. A pumping system is installed inside them, eliminating unnecessary openings and air ingress. This makes it easier to use the dishes - this thermos has a pump button and spout, which allows you to avoid tilting the thermos to fill the cup.

With valve

You can buy a thermos that has a stopper with a button-valve. It's easy to use and requires minimal steps to get a hot drink. You don't need to unscrew anything, you just need to press a button. This is a sealed option, but sometimes the mechanism breaks. When used in cold weather, the valve sometimes freezes and jams. Typically, thermoses with a stopper valve have a top protective cover that is used as a cup.

Corks with tongue

The presence of a stopper with a tongue simplifies the use of the thermos - it resembles a bolt mechanism. To pour a drink, just move the “tongue” to the side. This option is used in sports thermoses and thermal mugs. They are not airtight and reliable - you can spill a drink if you carry it in a bag.

Twist-off plugs

Some thermoses will require you to unscrew the cap to pour liquid out of it. This is how the thermos quickly loses heat. To do this, some manufacturers make the following design: the cap does not need to be unscrewed completely, but rather opened slightly for the drink to start flowing. The tightness here depends on attentiveness: if you do not screw the lid all the way, the drink may spill.

Thermos Stanley Legendary Classic

An American legend about which they say “my grandfather went fishing with this thermos.” The classic Stanley thermos model in the signature hammertone green color is available in two versions - with a folding and rigid handle.

Appearance of the Stanley Classic 2 liter thermos, in hammer green color and in the version with a folding handle.

Stabley Classic 2 liter thermos with rigid handle and hammer green finish. Art.10-07934-001

The video will help you see the difference between the Legendary Classic thermos models with a rigid handle and a folding handle:

A brief comparison of Stanley Legendary Classic thermoses with two handle options

The Stanley Legendary Classic thermos is made using materials:

  • Stainless food steel 18/8;
  • Plastic without Bisphenol A (BPA free);

Pros of the Stanley Legendary Classic thermos

  • Lifetime warranty;
  • Famous brand;
  • Available in different colors (branded hammer green, black, you can find blue);
  • 5 sizes for 1 l, 1.4 l, 2 l and 2.4 l;
  • Wide range of series, including beer container;

Possible disadvantages of a thermos:

  • The spot welding of the handle mount may fall off;
  • The folding handle can be “like it will fold up” when you pour;
  • The folding handle may rattle;

Regarding the unreliability of attaching the handle to the body of the thermos using spot welding. There are examples when it fell off during operation. But there are also examples when, with daily use for 26 years, everything is in place.

The situation with the possibility of washing in a dishwasher (DMM), at least for the “hammertone green” coloring, is unclear. Since in some places it is indicated that it can be washed in PMM (dishwasher safe), in others it is indicated that it is not. There are instructions on the body “to wash only by hand” (handwash only).

  • Image of the bottom of a thermos from the product page.

  • Bottom of Stanley Classic Vacuum Bottle with "hand wash" indication (circled).

The bottom of the Stanley thermos is painted hammertone green, with the indication “HAND WASH ONLY”.
Perhaps the whole question is in the properties of the paint/plastic in different series; in one series it is washable, in another it is not. Therefore, you should check before purchasing.

Stanley are the only thermoses for which spare parts were found on sale in the form of stoppers, etc. We also came across Thermos, but for the latest models you need to order from an official representative (more on this above).

Malfunctions and repairs

Common faults:

  • The thermos does not maintain heat;
  • the container allows water to pass through;
  • rapid cooling of the liquid.

The vessel does not maintain the required temperature due to lack of vacuum in the design or due to a leaky lid or mechanical failure:

  • Remove the lid that covers the bottom of the structure.
  • Under the lid is the bottom of the outer flask, into which a copper pipe with a flattened end is soldered. In thermos production, air is pumped through a copper tube to create a vacuum, then the end of the tube is compressed.

Even with minor damage, welds can burst and the space fills with air.

  • You can only fill the space between the containers with polyurethane foam yourself. The air is pumped out by specialists.
  • Before filling the space with foam, drill several holes with a diameter of 6 mm in the bottom of the outer container - through them the foam will get to the neck.
  • Do not fill the entire space with foam at once - it needs free space to expand.

Water leakage is possible due to a leaky rubber sealing ring on the lid. It is recommended to change the seal. You can do this yourself by simply disconnecting the damaged ring and attaching a new part in its place.

Rapid cooling of the water occurs due to the fact that the volume of the tank does not correspond to the required time for maintaining the temperature or the vacuum has not been pumped out sufficiently.

Thermos Work Series 1.2 l (40 Oz.)

Thermos Work Series 1.2l (40 oz / ounce)

In terms of volume, the thermos does not meet the specified criteria, but high quality and reliability for those who are satisfied with the volume of 1.2 liters will bring pleasure from use and ownership for a long time. Therefore, it was decided to leave the thermos on the list of contenders.

Even the name of the color “gun metal gray” should evoke associations of strength and reliability with a weapon.

The Work series includes the same heavy duty 670ml (20 ounce) thermos mug and a thermos for use in the most severe conditions where strength, reliability and durability are important.

Of the minuses, we can note only one thermos size of 1.2 liters.
