Combustion chamber type

The gas burner is located in the combustion chamber. There are two types - open (atmospheric) and closed (with a turbine, forced). A double-circuit gas boiler with an open combustion chamber can only be installed in rooms with good ventilation. During operation, the oxygen necessary for combustion is taken from the room, and combustion products are discharged into the chimney with good draft. Therefore, a good air flow and a properly functioning exhaust ventilation duct are necessary.

Gas boilers come with open and closed combustion chambers

Gas boilers with a closed combustion chamber are distinguished by the fact that at the chamber outlet there is a coaxial chimney (pipe within a pipe) equipped with a fan. The chimney is taken out into the street, or into the wall near the boiler. Through one pipe, air is taken in from the street, through the second, combustion products are removed, their movement is ensured by a fan-turbine.

Which combustion chamber is better? A boiler with a closed combustion chamber operates more stably - air enters directly into the combustion zone. But there is also a disadvantage to this: with a side wind, the air flow can be so strong that it blows out the burner and the boiler turns off. The second disadvantage of this solution is freezing and the formation of ice in winter. Well, the third drawback is that such a boiler only works when there is electricity - without a turbine it turns off. Well, there is another small minus - the turbine is not silent. It’s almost inaudible, but it’s “almost.” Apparently for these reasons, if possible (a working ventilation duct), boilers with an open combustion chamber are installed. After all, ensuring a constant flow of air is much easier.

How to choose and what to pay attention to?

  1. Control method : single stage. two-stage or three-stage. Two-stage boilers adapt best to daily and seasonal temperature changes.
  2. Heat exchanger type : separate or bithermic devices. Separate ones have 2 heat exchangers: one for heating, the second for hot water supply. In such boilers, scale does not form and boiling of water is eliminated, but they are more expensive. Bithermic ones have double elements, the disadvantages are worse cross-country ability and scale formation.
  3. Automation : mechanical or electronic. Electronic ones are more expensive, but in case of problems with electronics, additional repair costs are required.

Equipment traction options

During operation of the unit, fuel burns and flue gases are generated. To remove them from a living space, natural or forced draft is necessary. It will ensure timely removal of all combustion products and released harmful substances from the apartment or house.

Natural draft modules

Boilers operating on natural draft have a simple design and take the air necessary for proper combustion from the room in which they are located. During intensive use, a certain amount of steam and various chemicals are released. Emissions are removed through a vertical chimney.

Among the main advantages of units with natural draft are reasonable cost, energy independence and absence of noise effects during operation.

In general, devices with natural draft are convenient and good, however, when the pressure in the gas pipeline drops, the quality of their work decreases significantly. At the same time, the risk of rapid burnout of the burner increases, since the fire at a reduced pressure level dies out or goes inside the burner device.

Uneven pressure in the main networks provokes serious overconsumption of fuel, which entails an increase in the amount of utility bills.

Forced draft devices

Boilers with forced draft are sometimes called forced-air or fan-type. They take air not from the room where they are located, but from the street. The modules have closed combustion chambers, and waste substances are emitted through a coaxial horizontal outlet using a powerful fan built into the system.

A coaxial bend consists of two pipe elements of different diameters inserted into one another. Through the smaller pipe, combustion products exit the room, and through the space between the small and large pipes, fresh air enters the room from the street, which is necessary for the full functioning of the boiler

Products with forced draft are easy to install, do not make any demands on the location, do not “eat up” oxygen in residential premises, work stably and accurately even with reduced gas pressure in the central main networks and do not require the installation of an additional vertical chimney.

The devices are criticized for the noisy operation of fan elements, higher cost and dependence on power supply.

Advantages and disadvantages of gas systems

In places where central gas communications are laid, double-circuit boilers are very popular. They are purchased for heating and uninterrupted supply of hot water to apartments, residential buildings and country cottages.

The main advantages of the devices

The gas system demonstrates a high level of efficiency, delivers several times more energy than it consumes, lasts a long time and operates smoothly. Does not require constant human supervision.

The double-circuit boiler looks neat and modern. Unlike units operating on solid or liquid fuels, during operation it practically does not emit unpleasant odors and creates a minimum of soot and soot

The fuel resource is supplied to the installation continuously, and the built-in controller independently monitors the presence of fire on the burner. If the flame dies out, the sensor sends a signal to the ignition unit and the automatic supply of a spark instantly restores the fire. Controlling the boiler is simple and does not present any difficulty.

Disadvantages of dual-circuit equipment

The main disadvantages are associated not so much with the device itself, but with the process of its legalization and installation. You can’t just buy a boiler, bring it home and install it yourself according to the connection diagram. First, you will have to comply with a lot of technical nuances, draw up documentation and coordinate all subsequent actions with the local gas supply company.

There you will need to provide:

  • equipment installation project, drawn up in accordance with the norms adopted by law;
  • installation agreement with a specialized organization;
  • a copy of the license of the specialized organization confirming the right to carry out work.

In addition, you will need to organize the removal of exhaust gas from the living space, lay an additional chimney for this or use an existing old one, and install additional equipment to control potential gas leaks.

If the boiler smokes, perhaps the pressure in the system has decreased or the existing burner has worn out and begun to burn out. A specialist with relevant experience will help you quickly fix problems

The main installation activities can begin only when the project documentation for the organization of gas heating has passed all stages of approval and the client receives a stamped permit for the installation of the system.

Classification by installation location

According to the installation principle, boilers serving two communication circuits are floor-mounted, wall-mounted and parapet-mounted. Each option has its own special characteristics.

Based on them, the client can choose the most suitable installation method for himself, in which the equipment will be conveniently located, will not “eat up” the usable area and will not cause problems during operation.

Floor-standing boilers

Floor-standing units are high-power devices that can heat and provide hot water not only to a standard apartment or residential building, but also to a large industrial premises, public building or structure.

If a double-circuit boiler is planned to be used not only for heating and supplying domestic hot water, but also for replenishing warm water floors, the basic unit is equipped with an additional circuit

Due to their large size and significant weight (up to 100 kg for some models), floor-standing gas boilers are not installed in the kitchen, but are placed in a separate room directly on the foundation or on the floor.

Features of wall equipment

A mounted appliance is a progressive type of household heating equipment. Due to its compact size, a geyser can be installed in the kitchen or other small rooms. It can be combined with any type of interior solution and fits organically into the overall design.

A double-circuit wall-hung boiler can be placed not only in the kitchen, but also in the pantry. It will take up minimal space and will not interfere with furniture or other household appliances

Despite its small size, a wall-mounted boiler has the same functionality as a floor-standing device, but has less power. It consists of a burner, an expansion tank, a pump for forced movement of the coolant, a pressure gauge and automatic sensors that make it possible to use the fuel resource with maximum efficiency.

All communication elements are “hidden” under a beautiful, modern case and do not spoil the appearance of the product.

The flow of gas to the burner is controlled by a built-in safety system. In the event of an unexpected interruption of the resource supply, the unit’s functioning completely stops. When fuel starts flowing again, the automation automatically activates the equipment and the boiler continues to operate in standard mode.

The automatic control unit allows you to set the device any operating parameters that are most suitable for the user. It is possible to set your own temperature conditions for different times of the day, thus ensuring economical consumption of fuel resources.

Nuances of parapet devices

A parapet boiler is a cross between a floor-mounted and a wall-mounted unit. It has a closed combustion chamber and does not create harmful emissions. Does not require the installation of an additional chimney. The combustion products are removed through a coaxial chimney laid in the outer wall.

A parapet-type boiler is the best option for heating equipment for small rooms with a weak ventilation system. The device is designed so that during operation it does not emit combustion products into the atmosphere of the room in which it is installed.

The device is mainly used to provide hot water and full heating to small houses and apartments in high-rise buildings where it is not possible to install a classic vertical chimney. The basic power ranges from 7 to 15 kW, but despite such low figures, the unit successfully copes with the assigned tasks.

The main advantage of parapet equipment is the ability to connect heating and water supply communications to the central gas system and pipelines from any side convenient for the user.

Types of double-circuit gas boilers

  • Condensing boiler - generates heat not only due to the fact that gas is burned inside, but also due to the effect of condensation of water vapor (it is formed as one of the combustion products). This is durable equipment with high efficiency.
  • Non-volatile boiler - works in difficult conditions without electricity. Such devices last a long time, are easy to operate and save energy.
  • Wall-mounted boilers require mounting on the wall, with a mandatory indentation from other equipment and furniture. They combine both a heating boiler and a water heater. Suitable for small houses (350-400 sq.m. area).
  • A convection boiler differs from a condensing boiler in only one way - the more complex principle of heat accumulation.

How to choose the power of a gas boiler

Do not strive to buy a boiler with the highest power . Based on the number of boiling water collection points in your home: the more there are, the more power you need.

About a third (30-40%) is spent on heating, add to these data another 10-20% of inevitable heat losses.

The remainder should be enough to heat your house or apartment . Example: for a house with an area of 200 sq.m. and with one bathroom, a boiler with a power of 24 kW is sufficient.

Insulating your home will help avoid significant heat loss and save fuel.

Operating principle of double-circuit boilers

In heating mode, the unit operates as follows: after the first switching on, the burner “warms up” for a long time, and having reached the required numbers, gas stops flowing into the boiler.

The coolant drives heat back and forth through the coolant, combustion products are removed from the system (either by a fan or independently).

In the heating mode of the water circuit, its operation begins with the turn of the tap. The three-way valve stops the heating circuit, the gas burner lights up (if it was turned off) and hot water starts flowing from the tap.

Criterias of choice

A wall-mounted double-circuit gas boiler should be assessed according to the following main characteristics:

By power.

This parameter is decisive, since the efficiency of the heating circuit depends on it. To determine the required installation power, consider:

  1. Size of heated area;
  2. Glazing features;
  3. Availability of thermal insulation;
  4. Height of ceilings;
  5. Number of external walls.

By type and number of heat exchangers

. Designs with separate heat exchangers for hot water supply and heating mains have the following advantages:

  1. When using a secondary heat exchanger, the possibility of burns is practically eliminated, since the temperature in the DHW line does not rise above 60 0C;
  2. The amount of scale and mineral deposits in the secondary heat exchanger is minimal;
  3. If scale forms in the primary heat exchanger, you can clean or replace it yourself.

The disadvantages of this design include:

  1. Higher cost compared to bithermal heat exchangers;
  2. The need to install a three-way valve.

Using a twin heat exchanger allows you to:

  1. Significantly reduce the overall dimensions of the boiler and eliminate the installation of a three-way valve and simplify the design;
  2. The cost of a bithermal heat exchanger is less than the total cost of the primary and secondary heat exchangers.

This is where all the advantages of such a scheme end, but the disadvantages of this design are very significant:

  1. Regardless of the selected operating mode, stagnation of the heated liquid is observed either in the heating circuit or in the DHW circuit, which leads to intensive formation of mineral deposits in the heat exchanger tubes;
  2. When the DHW tap is closed, intense heating of the water continues, so when the mixer is opened, you can get a serious burn. Regulating the water temperature using an automated control system leads to a decrease in the efficiency of the heating main;
  3. The universal heat exchanger is a rather complex structure and, if the tubes become clogged or leaks, cannot be repaired or cleaned.

Based on the above, we can conclude that despite the higher cost, preference should be given to units with a secondary heat exchanger for the DHW circuit.

By type of combustion product exhaust system

There are installations with natural and forced removal of exhaust gases. Natural removal of combustion products has the following advantages:

  1. There is no need to install an exhaust fan;
  2. With a properly installed chimney, condensation does not form;
  3. The cost of installations with natural exhaust is noticeably lower than the cost of boilers with forced removal of combustion products;
  4. The simplicity of the design significantly increases the reliability of the unit.

However, this design is not without its disadvantages:

  • The need to install supply ventilation ducts;
  • Objective difficulties with the design and construction of a chimney;
  • In a city apartment, installation of a chimney is not possible.

Forced removal of combustion products is carried out using a built-in fan. The advantages of turbocharged boilers include the following:

  1. Such equipment can be installed both in the private sector and in an apartment;
  2. There is no need for a supply ventilation device;
  3. Despite the fact that the price of turbocharged units is slightly higher than chimney units, the difference is fully compensated by the absence of costs for the design and installation of a chimney.

Flaws:

  1. Excessive formation of condensate in the coaxial pipe. If the temperature drops significantly, the chimney may freeze;
  2. The design of the device is greatly complicated due to the installation of a pneumatic relay, a fan and a fan relay;
  3. The operation of the fan increases the noise of the boiler.

By automation, energy dependence and type of ignition

double-circuit wall-mounted gas boilers can differ significantly. Budget class models are equipped with an electronic control unit providing:

  1. Switching off the device if there is insufficient traction;
  2. Protective functions of the system in case of burner extinguishing;
  3. Blocking the operation of the boiler in the absence of coolant in the heating line.

In premium models, the electronic control unit can provide a number of additional functions:

  1. Possibility of programming in heating and heated floor modes;
  2. Automatic start of the installation if the coolant temperature drops to +5 0C;
  3. Storing programs for various operating modes.
