Random or vibration sander, what to choose?

What are they?

The flat orbital sander is designed to be used in combination with a variety of materials. For woodworking, models with a maximum platform size and a large power reserve are selected. They allow you to successfully process even corner areas of floors and walls. Mini versions are convenient for use in hard-to-reach places, have a compact platform and low power. For metal work, PShMs are used in auto repair shops, as well as in the production of doors and fence structures.

Using the equipment, you can remove old paintwork, remove scratches, traces of corrosion and oxidation. A triangular or deltoid sole is indispensable when restoring old furniture and interior items. With its help, it is convenient to remove paint from window frames and door jambs. Models with additional equipment can work with a round nozzle and replace eccentric counterparts.

Peculiarities

A vibrating grinder is a device with an electric motor and a working flat sole, on which abrasive consumables are secured using Velcro or special clamps. By changing the grit of the sandpaper used, you can produce coarse or fine sanding, providing continuous impact on the surface area chosen by the master. The amplitude of movement of the platform is low, but the high frequency of movements allows one to achieve a higher quality of work than with manual grinding. Compact dimensions do not negate the functionality of the tool. vibration type sander

  • light weight - most of the models on sale weigh from 1.5 to 2 kg, the most powerful options reach 3 kg;
  • engine power ranges from 110 to 600 W; most popular models are limited to 350–400 W;
  • drive shaft rotation speed up to 25,000 rpm, directly affects the number of vibrations produced by the sole;
  • the displacement in the horizontal plane depends on how rough the work is to be done; For the most delicate work, it is recommended to use grinders with an amplitude of 1.5–2.5 mm; for rougher processing, it is better to choose machines with a maximum offset of up to 5 mm.

Important! It is these features that have a fundamental influence on the choice of suitable equipment for home or professional use.

Vibration sander

A vibrating machine is a tool for a more “delicate” effect on the surface of the wood. The work surface is often rectangular in shape, which makes it convenient for sanding corners.

The main criteria when choosing this particular type of machine are:

  • Dimensions of the working surface (sole). This parameter directly affects the speed of work performed.
  • Sole shape. The rectangular surface can be supplemented with a triangular wedge for working in hard-to-reach places.
  • The amplitude of the machine’s movements: as it increases, the processing speed increases. But this may affect the quality of grinding.
  • Method of fixing an abrasive surface. There are several possible options: clips, Velcro, a combined method.
  • Possibility of adjusting the speed of movement: it may be different for different wood.
  • A way to get rid of chips and dust.

Random orbital sander

An eccentric or orbital machine processes wood to a one hundred percent polished state.

An eccentric machine processes wood to a completely polished state.

Difficult areas are processed using a different method, often manually. This design is distinguished by a complex trajectory of movement of the working surface: the sole of the machine makes rotational and oscillatory-orbital movements. Pneumatic models are more comfortable to use.

This type of tool is the most expensive. Moreover, pneumatic models of grinders must be equipped with a high-performance compressor. This may not always be the case for domestic use. In most cases, such a tool is used in production.

If the shape of the surface is triangular (delta grinder), then such a tool is used if it is necessary to work in inaccessible places. This makes it possible to avoid manual sanding. The abrasive paper is attached to the base using Velcro, which makes it quick and easy to replace.

The speed of its work is very high. This model brings every detail to perfect smoothness, but it can only be used to work on large, even surfaces.

Comparison with other models

It is worth considering how a vibrating surface grinder differs from eccentric and belt models. It is considered a more universal option, allowing you to vary the level of surface treatment. belt sander is easy to use with objects that have a uniform texture and is suitable for rough finishing. The surface grinding option allows you to achieve results regardless of the initial smoothness of the coating.

Eccentric models have their own characteristics. They are designed primarily for working on large surfaces and allow for successful finishing. The eccentric sander is suitable for processing parquet floors. But it will not help when working with other, harder materials. Whereas a surface grinding unit will ensure successful processing even on the surface of fragile plastic or heavily corroded metal.

In fact, the vibrating PM is in its functionality somewhere between the belt and eccentric models. With them you can successfully complete the final processing of surfaces of various sizes. Mini versions successfully cope with narrow areas of material, complex and hard-to-reach places. The adjustable rotation frequency makes the PShM as convenient as possible for working with surfaces with non-uniform texture.

What is an orbital sander?

It should be noted that orbital sanders occupy a certain area of application between belt and eccentric sanders. The vibratory sander, as the name suggests, operates due to vibration, or more precisely, the reciprocating movements of the sole with a sheet of abrasive material attached to it. This is their difference from eccentric machines, where the sole moves along a complex rotational trajectory. The design of vibratory grinders is simpler, so they are, on average, cheaper than eccentric ones, but the likelihood of marks (scratches) appearing on the surface being processed is higher, so they are less suitable for finishing and polishing. In comparison with belt sanders, vibratory sanders benefit in the cleanliness of the resulting surface, but lose in productivity. In this comparison, we can also mention angle grinders (in terms of performance they are close to belt sanders, but achieving a smooth surface without round marks from the sanding sheet is not an easy task even for an experienced craftsman) and renovators with a grinding attachment (they can completely replace a small vibratory sander with a delta-shaped sole).

What exactly can an orbital sander be used for?

  • for sanding wood, metal, plaster and putty;
  • removing old paint, paintwork, rust;
  • processing of parts made of plastic, stone, gypsum;

READ What is the difference between a drill and a hammer drill, what to choose

We can also mention rather exotic applications such as felting and preparing solutions (in vessels attached to a vibrating sole).

Based on the listed capabilities, the vibratory sander is widely used in woodworking, repair and manufacture of furniture, repair and decoration of premises, body work during car repairs.

Main types

How to choose a grinding machine? The following main types of grinding machines are distinguished.

Angle grinder (angle grinder or grinder)

This tool is designed for processing stone, metal, ceramics and concrete. The design of the angle grinder involves the location of the working shaft at an angle to the plane of the electric motor. Using a special abrasive disc, grinders successfully eliminate corrosion, cut ceramic tiles, and clean welds.

The angle grinder is designed for processing stone, metal, ceramics and concrete

A large number of special attachments provide a wide range of angle grinder applications. When choosing an angle grinder, it is recommended to pay attention to the weight of the tool and the length of the spindle.

Engravers can be equipped with a variety of brushes, grinding stones, cutting wheels, etc. Straight grinders are characterized by their small size, thanks to which they are able to work effectively in confined spaces.

Belt sanding machine (LSM)

This tool is designed for rough grinding, roughening the surface and removing a large layer of material. It is used in construction, carpentry, and carpentry. The belt sander can work on plastic, metal, wood and other materials. The principle of operation of the device involves the movement of the sanding belt along guide rollers. The low center of gravity of the blade ensures minimal effort during operation.

The belt machine is designed for rough grinding

Note! Household belt sanders can have the following basic belt parameters: width - 76 mm, length - 457 mm, 533 mm and 610 mm. To level small surfaces, it is recommended to choose a tool with a short tape length.

Brush grinder

A distinctive feature of this tool is the presence of a metal brush instead of sandpaper. The brush sander can effectively process different types of surfaces: metal, wood and glass.

ESMs can be of two types: with a classic handle (processing large surfaces) and with a handle for one palm (delicate work).

Vibratory (surface grinding)

Used for cleaning plastic, wood, stone, metals, composite materials. Widely used in furniture repair, woodworking, body repair.

Used for cleaning plastic, wood, stone, metals

The vibratory sander is driven by an electric motor, which transmits oscillatory movements through an eccentric connecting rod to the actuator (sole). The grinding process is carried out using abrasive sheets, which are attached to the surface of the sole with clamps or Velcro.

Delta sander

In terms of its operating principle, this grinder is similar to the vibrating model. However, the delta sander has a different shape of the working element, which is made in the shape of a delta (triangle). This tool is designed for processing hard-to-reach areas, such as recesses and bulges.

The delta sander is suitable for hard-to-reach places

The advantages of the delta sander include its low weight and dimensions, which ensures its ease of use.

Polishing

This is a type of grinder, which is equipped with a special D-shaped handle on the body. The device operates at low speeds, which can be adjusted. Abrasive wheels are used as equipment: felt, fur or foam. Scope of application: grinding, cleaning and polishing various surfaces, including delicate ones.

Choices

If you plan to use an orbital sander for various small jobs around the house, a basic model costing up to 2,000 rubles with the ability to change speed is suitable for you. In this range, you can choose a completely decent machine with the desired sole shape and good power.

For professional activities, you should opt for trusted manufacturers specializing in professional tools. Prices for such a tool will start from 3,000 rubles.

If you are into wood carving or stucco making, a lightweight tool with a deltoid sole will come in handy. These are offered at prices up to 6,000 rubles.

If the vibratory sander is intended to be used for interior finishing, weight is also important, but the size of the sole is more important, and the ability to attach an abrasive mesh as a sanding sheet is of decisive importance. You can choose such machines in the range from 2000 to 9000 rubles.

For finishing wood processing, vibratory sanders with a small amplitude of the sole stroke are suitable, but if you need a reserve of power and the ability to deeply process wood or metal, you should pay attention to machines with a larger amplitude.

Which wood sanding machine is better to choose?

Construction, as it is also called, restoration work requires the purchase of a tool for final processing of wood (wood grinder), and which model should you choose? It depends on its purpose, because the tool is multifunctional. The aspects of choice are significantly influenced by the characteristics of the surfaces being processed: their size, or, in other words, the complexity of the design with an abundance of inaccessible places. What is important is the size of the budget allocated for restoration, or construction, in addition to the experience of the master, his ability to work with equipment for sanding wood.

If you need a sander for independent use (small repairs, hobbies), choose lightweight models that are not completely economical.

They are light and not small in size. To handle huge volumes of construction or residential work (nettles, in a furniture workshop), it would be more successful to purchase massive units.

The following types of woodworking sanders are distinguished:

  • tape;
  • vibration;
  • eccentric;
  • angular;
  • renovator;
  • brush.

Tools – Choosing an orbital sander

Vibratory grinding machines are designed to mechanize one of the most monotonous and painstaking work - grinding flat surfaces. Do you spend hours “shuffling” with a sanding block, achieving an ideal surface, or get the same result in a few minutes of using a sander? The answer is obvious.

It is not surprising that grinders have won people's love and have received a worthy place on the shelf of every master. Today there are a large number of different vibration grinding machines on the market. Before purchasing it, you should understand the main differences between these machines and the capabilities hidden behind these differences.

As you can see from the picture, an orbital grinder is a fairly universal tool. But the wider the range of capabilities of a tool, the more expensive it is. At the same time, a universal tool always loses to a highly specialized one, and its price can be many times more expensive. Therefore, before choosing a sander, you should clearly understand what it will be used for - and not expect the impossible from it.

What exactly can an orbital sander be used for?

  • for sanding wood, metal, plaster and putty;
  • removing old paint, paintwork, rust;
  • processing of parts made of plastic, stone, gypsum;

We can also mention rather exotic applications such as felting and preparing solutions (in vessels attached to a vibrating sole).

Based on the listed capabilities, the vibratory sander is widely used in woodworking, repair and manufacture of furniture, repair and decoration of premises, body work during car repairs.

Characteristics of vibratory sanders

The base of the orbital sander is driven by a motor. Power consumption

The motor (as for most power tools) is one of the most important parameters.

But for vibratory grinders this parameter is strongly related to the next parameter - the amplitude of vibrations

. The greater the amplitude, the faster (but at the same time rougher) the surface treatment occurs.

In each specific instrument, the motor power is selected optimal for the amplitude used - from 120-250W for an oscillation amplitude of 1mm to 400-600W for 5mm.

Therefore, it would be more correct to first select the amplitude, and only then, from the determined range, select the power, based on how large the volumes are and what surfaces are to be processed. Remember, the harder the material you are sanding, the more power you will need to sand it.

At the same time, you should be careful when choosing a tool with minimal power. Even if you do not plan to process anything harder than soft types of wood, the power reserve will not be superfluous - any electric motor will last much longer if it is not used at the power limit.

Another important parameter is the number of oscillations

soles per minute, in other words, the speed of its movement.

Processing different materials requires different speeds: for example, plastics and varnished surfaces should be processed at a minimum speed - so that the temperature increasing with friction does not spoil the surface.

Medium speed is recommended for processing soft metals such as aluminum. On the high side – hard wood and metals.

What to do if the machine is not purchased for processing one specific material? , a speed controller is required

– it will give the instrument the required versatility.

Parameters related to the size and shape of the sole affect which parts can be processed with an orbital sander.

The larger the sole size

, the easier it will be to process large surfaces.

But, at the same time, a machine with a larger sole area, in order to maintain performance, must have a correspondingly greater engine power; and, ultimately, at a higher cost.

When choosing between two machines with the same power and different sole areas, you should keep in mind that the productivity of the machine with a larger sole will be noticeably less. However, some models have replaceable soles.

Sole shape

can be rectangular, closer to square or deltoid. It is believed that a rectangular sole shape is preferable to a square one due to its versatility: by moving the machine forward with the wide side of the sole, you can achieve a better effect on large surfaces, and the narrow side allows you to penetrate into grooves and corners where the wide side cannot fit.

The deltoid shape of the sole allows you to process parts of complex shapes, with internal corners and grooves. The disadvantage of deltoid soles is that the sanding sheet can only be attached to such soles using Velcro.

Sanding sheet fastening

on different models can be performed using the so-called. Velcro or using clips. The main difference between these methods is the price of sanding sheets.

As a rule, any sanding paper can be secured in the clamps - both fabric and paper based. For Velcro, sanding sheets on a special fabric basis are required, the price of which, as you might guess, is much higher.

In addition, due to the differences in the shape and size of the soles of machines from different manufacturers, most likely, each time you will have to look for sanding sheets from the same manufacturer as the machine itself.

If you intend to use an abrasive mesh (often used for grinding putty walls and ceilings), then the presence of a clamp becomes mandatory.

It should also be noted the importance of having a dust collector. And it’s not just the high harmfulness of dust generated during grinding (especially when grinding plastics and varnished surfaces).

The point is also that the base of the vibratory sander can become very hot during operation, up to the ignition temperature of the material being sanded.

And fine wood dust burns well and, under certain conditions, even explodes! Therefore, you should not save on this option.

Also, for good dust removal, you need to ensure that the installed sanding sheets always have holes in the appropriate places. In sanding sheets for Velcro, the holes, as a rule, are already made - but you still need to make sure that they correspond to the holes on the sole itself.

In sheets installed in clamps, holes must be made manually; Sometimes the manufacturer supplies a punch for cutting holes with the machine. Also, sometimes the kit comes with a template according to which the sanding sheets should be cut.

If you don’t have it, don’t be upset: you can use one of the sanding sheets included in the kit as a template.

If you intend to use the machine on an industrial scale, it may make sense to think about a model with the ability to connect to a vacuum cleaner - these are also offered.

The weight of this tool, in most cases, cannot be called an important criterion - if the surfaces being processed are always located horizontally, it can be neglected. But if you plan to process walls and ceilings (for example, when finishing premises), the tool will have to be kept suspended while working. Then you should pay close attention to this criterion.

Choices

Armed with the above information, it will not be difficult for you to choose a tool that suits your needs and budget.

If you plan to use an orbital sander for various small jobs around the house, a basic model costing up to 2,000 rubles with the ability to change speed is suitable for you. In this range, you can choose a completely decent machine with the desired sole shape and good power.

The speed of its work is very high. This model brings any detail to perfect smoothness, but it can only be used to work on large and even surfaces.

Pay attention to the parameters when choosing a grinder

It should be noted that both of these grinders mostly perform finishing work, and if you have the task of performing work on a large scale, then the wrong choice will bring you not only financial losses, but also wasted time.

Vibrating or eccentric sanders can have different purposes:

  • For household use;
  • Professional scope of application.

When choosing a grinder, you should pay attention to the following technical characteristics:

  • Platform stroke amplitude. This is one of the main characteristics of grinding machines. Average vibration value. 2-3 mm. The higher the amplitude, the higher the performance of the grinder, but the grinding becomes much coarser. That is, if you need a grinder for primary processing, pay attention to models with high amplitude. For finishing purposes. on the contrary, machines with an amplitude of 2 mm and below;
  • Sole size. PShM and EShM soles come in different sizes and shapes, although there are generally accepted standards. for eccentric diameters 122 and 150 mm, for PShM 187x90, 115x230, 114x105 mm. Models with small soles will help when working in hard-to-reach places;
  • Speed adjustment. Thanks to this function, you can customize the operation of the machine. primary or finishing processing, as well as choose the optimal speed for grinding a particular material. For example, if we are sanding soft wood or plywood, then it is recommended to choose medium speed, and if we are sanding hard wood. high;
  • Power. The power consumption of machines can vary from 130 to 900 W. But, as a rule, for most work, a power of 200-300 W is quite enough, because such models are light and compact, easy to control, and work with them is more comfortable;
  • Attaching sanding paper. Manufacturers have provided 2 types of fastening for a surface grinder: a clamp (similar to a regular latch with a spring, which is found on most household-grade sanders) and Velcro (less hassle with it, since you don’t have to cut the paper, it has a standard size, but the cost of such machines , as well as consumables, above).
  • Additional handle. For PShM and EShM, the additional handle is either cast or removable. If it is removable, this reduces the size of the device and allows you to use the tool with one hand. This is convenient when sanding small parts.

Basic recommendations when choosing a device

When choosing a grinder, it is recommended to pay attention to the following features and nuances:

  1. When selecting a grinder, it is important to determine the frequency of use of the unit. This determines which model should be preferred - household or professional. For short-term work with minimal loads, household devices are suitable, but for intensive, long-term use - professional units;
  2. Choose tools only from trusted brands. The most famous foreign manufacturers include Makita, Metabo, Flex, Stern, Bosch, DeWALT, AEG, Black & Decker. Their products have high performance characteristics and can last a long time. Budget models are produced by such manufacturers as Zenit, Fiolent, Proton, MONOLITH-Kharkov. They are of fairly high quality at a reasonable price;
  3. After purchase, you must carefully study the operating instructions for the tool. It is extremely important to use the sander strictly for its intended purpose. Otherwise, there is a risk of injury;
  4. It is necessary to calculate for what kind of work a grinding machine may be needed. To work with smooth surfaces, you should give preference to belt models, but when grinding or polishing decorative items, you should choose eccentric devices;
  5. When operating the grinder, it is advisable to use only those consumables that are provided by the manufacturer. The use of low-quality consumables can lead to tool malfunction and injury;
  6. Pay attention to the shape of the tool handles. When choosing, it is advisable to hold the grinder in your hands for a while, check its modes, weight, ergonomics, etc.;
  7. When operating the grinder, carefully observe safety precautions. This is especially true when working with an angle grinder. In particular, you need to wear goggles or a protective mask when working, do not work without a protective casing, and also hold the tool securely during operations;
  8. Preference should be given to models that do not have strong vibration and play on the working element.

Sander: vibrating or eccentric

To obtain an even and perfectly smooth surface when sanding, I always recommend that craftsmen use two sanders. One is for initial, rough stripping, the other is for final stripping.

If everything is clear with the initial processing. here you need to take a belt sander, then when bringing the surface to perfection you can use one of two types:

    Vibratory (another name is surface grinding, or abbreviated as PShM);
  • Eccentric (ESM, another name is orbital).
  • Both are designed for sanding substrates when completing work. Which of these cars is better in which situation. Is the sander oscillating or eccentric? I will tell you today in this article.

    You will learn what their main differences are, how their design determines the capabilities of each device, and what their strengths and weaknesses are.

    The information presented will give you the necessary knowledge on how to sand surfaces of different shapes using these units, and which one will suit you best.

Basic principles of grinding

These two types of grinders differ significantly in the grinding principle. First, let's review the vibrating tool. The mechanism of operation is quite simple; to clean the surface, reciprocating movements with an amplitude from 1-3 (low-power) to 5-8 mm (powerful) are used. This allows you to cope well with a metal surface or plastic, unlike ESM. However, PShM leaves marks on wood and is not suitable for opening with varnish, but only for coating with paint.

The principle of operation of an ESM is that with the help of a round sole, not only vibration occurs, but also rotation around its own axis. Thanks to this double movement, the ESM perfectly prepares the surface for varnishing. During operation, it leaves no sanding marks at all. Models of this type ideally create the effect of abrasive grinding. Widely used for furniture restoration or decoration.

Which sander is better: eccentric or belt sander. Where is it used?

The vibrating surface grinding machine is used in the workshop or during repairs and restoration of surfaces. During its operation, the moving platform comes into contact with the material, removing the top layer from it. The tool grinds materials with different levels of hardness and strength. Artificial and natural stones, polymers, wood, and metal are susceptible to impact, ensuring the removal of plaque and contaminants (carbon deposits, rust, scale). On the farm, the use of vibrating PMs is quite diverse.

Using them you can create the following actions:

  • achieve the desired evenness and smoothness of the wood surface during restoration and repair of furniture;
  • renew floors whose coating has partially peeled off;
  • clean soot from household utensils used in food preparation;
  • prepare walls, ceilings, window sills, stairs for finishing.

This is only a small part of the jobs that modern grinding tools can successfully handle.

Design differences between the two machines

Both machines are capable of delicately sanding the surface with sandpaper. In fact, they do the same job, but there is a difference between them. They differ in both shape and operating principle. The surface of a PSM is often rectangular (but can be deltoid or square). And the eccentric one. the sole is round. Therefore, depending on the complexity of the grinding work and the shape of the workpiece, you choose a machine with a convenient sole shape. For example, steps or shelves can be easily sanded with a grinding machine; thanks to the angular sole, they can be reached into any corner.

The eccentric machine is used for working with both flat surfaces and radii, as well as wooden parts of various shapes. Orbital and eccentric sanders are used in construction workshops; in car repair shops they perform not only finishing work for sanding wood, but are also convenient for various types of finishing work. But still, their main purpose is to ideally prepare the surface for painting or give the part the required shape.

Essentially, these are two identical tools, but there are some differences. A surface (vibrating) sander can handle any surface: wood, plastic, metal, walls (plasterboard). But she does it a little rudely, unlike ESM. In turn, an orbital sander will perform this entire list of work more delicately due to the fact that it has an additional rotation function, which helps hide sanding marks.

How does a grinder work?

The operation of the grinder is based on the effect of friction of the abrasive surface of the tool on the base being processed.

There are several principles of operation of a power tool:

  • Vibration. Characterized by forward-return movement.
  • Circular. Movement occurs around an axis.
  • Combined (eccentric). Combines two operating principles - axial rotation and vibration.
  • Linear continuous. Typical for a belt type tool.

Work must be carried out in the following sequence:

  • connect the equipment to the outlet;
  • provide a comfortable hand grip;
  • turn on;
  • wait until the unit picks up speed;
  • bring it to the surface to be treated and start sanding.

By following the steps, you can avoid injury and damage to the device.

Any sander has the following elements in its design:

  • Engine . The most common type is collector; in the most modern models it can be collectorless. But the cost of the second option is quite high. But periodic replacement of brushes is not required.
  • Power : mains, battery, pneumatic.
  • Working platform on which abrasive replaceable sheets, tapes, discs are fixed.
  • Handle . Depending on the model, there may be 1-2 handles.
  • Control system .
    On/off, speed control. Well-known brands have additional auto-adjustment. The moment grinding begins, the machine's performance drops due to friction. Professional equipment contains a sensor that controls the speed, which allows you to maintain the required intensity of torque.
  • Disk . The diameter of the disk directly depends on the engine power. The higher the capabilities of the unit, the larger the disk can be used.

Depending on the type of grinder, there may be differences in design.

Let's sum it up

  • Cleaner surface grinding;
  • Ability to grind curved surfaces;
  • Possibility of polishing.
    • It is not possible to machine corner surfaces because the sole is round.
    • Effective sanding of wood, stone, primer, metal;
    • There is a wide choice of sole sizes and shapes - rectangle or delta;
    • It copes well with corner surfaces, does not leave unworn areas on the edges, close to the edging, in narrow places.
    • The quality of grinding is not as high as that of an ESM. Often leaves scratches on wooden areas.

    If we talk about surface cleaning, then for more delicate grinding it is better to choose and use eccentric machines. They perform better in the finishing stage and are designed for perfect sanding. Although their productivity is significantly lower than that of vibration ones. However, an orbital tool is indispensable on volumetric surfaces with curved and profile parts.

    For large areas, it is better to use a vibrating sander, as its power and performance are much better. If you need to process a surface with corners, then you cannot do without a vibrating machine. Thanks to the rectangular shape of the sole, corners and hard-to-reach places, as well as the edges of the product, are easily processed.

    Eccentric (orbital)

    In addition to all the general parameters described, there are some nuances in choosing an eccentric machine for sanding wood:

    • The amount of eccentricity. That is, the amplitude of deviation during circular motion. It ranges from 2 mm to 8 mm. The higher this number, the higher the processing speed, but the lower its “purity”.
    • Sole diameter. Available in 90 mm, 100 mm, 125 mm and 150 mm. Professionals prefer to work with a sole diameter of 150 mm. They have the highest productivity and for this size there is a large selection of sandpaper of different grain sizes, there are no problems with spare parts.
    • Availability of a platform braking system. This option distinguishes a good tool from a not so good one. Needed to prevent spontaneous rotation and a smoother start.

    Purpose and design features

    Sanders of this type perform their functions due to the circular movement of the abrasive belt, which is very similar to the movement of a tractor caterpillar. Most often, a special dust collector is included in the kit, which prevents the dispersion of waste particles.

    READ How to Remove the Battery from a Screwdriver

    Difficulties in using the unit rarely arise - it is easily installed on the required surface, and all that is required of the car owner is to make uniform movements and monitor the result; vibration (surface grinding) - the main working element of such devices is a rectangular sole on which the abrasive is fixed.

    The sanding paper, depending on the features of the device, can be attached in two ways: using Velcro or a clamping mechanism located on both sides of the sole.

    Grinding and polishing of a car is carried out by reciprocating movements with an amplitude of about 2 mm; delta grinding - differ from vibrating grinders only in the triangular (like an iron) shape of the sole, which can move around its axis or in orbit.

    Used to treat hard-to-reach areas;

  • orbital (eccentric). Such grinding machines have a round base to which a grinding wheel is attached. All processes are carried out thanks to the simultaneous rotation of the sole in orbit and around its axis, which allows the work to be completed in a fairly short time;
  • angular – provide high-quality grinding through a grinding wheel that rotates around its axis.
  • Externally, an angle grinder is very similar to an angle grinder and can be used not only for grinding, but also for cutting various materials. For infrequent use, an angle grinder with a disk diameter of 115 to 125 mm is perfect, while a grinding tool with a disk diameter of 180-230 mm is classified as professional.

    A car sander greatly facilitates the process of polishing and sanding.

    Choosing an eccentric sander and reviewing four models

    The size of one approach must be determined from the span of your arms; often the area of this approach is about a meter.

    Using smooth movements and light pressure, begin to rub the surface. Having reached the base of the floor, we proceed to another strip, also from the ceiling.

    The main thing at this stage is not to start grinding a section of the wall that has already been completed in the second circle.

    If there is a large depression on the wall, skip this place and move on. Once you've gone through the entire wall, go back and putty the problem area.

    Once dry, sand individually.

    Checking the quality of work. You can check the quality of wall sanding after puttying using a level. Of course, you shouldn’t expect a perfectly flat surface, but there shouldn’t be any obvious differences either.

    Experts recommend: given the fact that grinding work is a dusty process, it is necessary to isolate the room being repaired from others in advance using doors or a curtain on the doorway.

    It is also recommended to remove tools and materials that are not in use.

    Wall sanding jobs can be completed much faster when using an electrically powered sanding machine.

    Today, such machines are divided into three main types:

    • Draw machines;
    • Orbital eccentric machines;
    • Vibrating flat machines.

    Belt and orbital sanders

    The first type of machine is used in cases where the putty is done poorly and it is necessary to remove a large layer of coating.

    Random orbital and surface grinder Which one to choose?

    Orbital eccentric machines have difficulty in corners, so their use in rooms with complex design solutions and many corners is impractical.

    Considering the third type - vibrating flat machines, it is worth noting that they are further divided into the following types:

    • Vertical;
    • Delta;
    • Polishing;
    • Brush;
    • Tape;
    • Polishing.

    Sanding walls after puttying, which is done using a special machine, not only takes less time, but the entire work process can be completed cleanly.

    Today there is a convenient addition to sanding machines that allows you to collect the resulting dust directly into a dust bag.

    When making repairs in your apartment or house, you do not need to specifically buy such a machine.

    After all, today it is not cheap. For one-time work, sandpaper and mesh are also perfect.

    The main thing is to do the work efficiently and carefully.

    Only then will you get perfectly smooth walls!

    Types, purpose, features of work

    There are different types of sanders that do the same type of work but with different results. There are tools for coarse (preliminary), medium (intermediate) and fine (finish) grinding. Part of the tool can even perform polishing.

    A wood sanding machine can be of different shapes, sizes, and performance.

    To choose a wood sander, you first need to decide what type of work you need it for. For rough grinding - leveling out unevenness, differences in height - one type is suitable, for finishing grinding - bringing it to perfection - another type. Moreover, both problems can be solved using different types of equipment.

    Angle grinder - angle grinder

    The well-known grinder can also be used for sanding wood. It copes well with the rough grinding function. Of all the possible tools, this is the most productive. If you need to quickly level large wooden surfaces - sanding the floor, wall, frame - this is work for an angle grinder. The downside is that the surface turns out to be very uneven, and it takes a long time to level out all the holes and humps. If this still “passes” on the log house, then the result for any carpentry work is unsatisfactory. Unless you can purchase another tool, you should not use an angle grinder for sanding wood.

    For wood, use red sanding wheels - this is a special abrasive

    There are special attachments for grinders for sanding wood. The best option is flap or disc wheels with sandpaper of different grits. When they are installed, the working plane is below the protective casing, it is safe to work, and you can move in any direction. Carefully handle areas with protruding nail heads and screws. We lower the tool from above and carefully move it. A sharp movement can easily break the grinding wheel, so be careful.

    By changing the grain size of the grinding wheels used, you can carry out coarse and medium (intermediate) grinding. The work will take less time than if you use any other wood sander. But it may take more time to bring it to a smooth surface, since, with a lack of experience, there will be more flaws.

    When sanding wood, the sandpaper becomes clogged and the speed of work decreases. In addition to a decrease in speed, there is another sign - the smell of burnt wood. It is not necessary to immediately change the disk; you can restore its functionality. To do this, grind the metal for a few seconds. Everything stuck to it—resin, wood fibers, dust—burns off, the surface is cleaned, and the processing speed increases again. This trick, by the way, can be used with other grinders.

    This attachment is used if you need to quickly change sandpaper.

    If you have to clean and change the wheels frequently, install a Velcro attachment on the grinder. Replacing the sandpaper is much easier and faster - unstick/stick in a matter of seconds. But working with the nozzle is more dangerous. Due to its height, the grinding area is above the level of the protective casing; it does not fulfill its functions. During the launch, it happens that a precariously fixed circle or even the nozzle itself flies off. They weigh little, the injuries are not serious, but they are still injuries. An angle grinder with a smooth start helps reduce risks, but, all the same, you need to work with gloves, protective clothing with tightly buttoned sleeves, boots that cover your feet, and safety glasses.

    Belt sander

    It is called so because the sandpaper has the shape of a belt that moves continuously using rollers. That’s why such a wood grinder is also called “endless.”

    The wood belt sander is designed for rough and intermediate surface leveling. By installing sandpaper with a finer grain, you can achieve a medium-finish finish. This is sufficient for joinery that cannot be painted. To bring it to perfect condition, you need a different type of wood sander. Moreover, to eliminate long longitudinal scratches, you will have to carry out step-by-step grinding, changing the grain size several times - the scratches remain deep.

    A belt sander is good if you need to remove the old coating - paint and varnish

    What are the benefits of a belt sander for wood? It has good performance. The tape on it is installed in such a way that one side allows you to sand close to the wall. What are its disadvantages? Due to the design, not all points can be “reached”. For example, corners, shaped recesses, grooves and other small parts. It is not always possible to “climb” between two parts (when processing railings, for example). Another drawback is that most belt sanders have a considerable weight, and it is difficult to work with them while sanding vertical surfaces. But on the horizontal plane they are the most productive.

    The following disadvantages are a high noise level, not the largest grinding spot. It is so noisy that working without headphones is extremely uncomfortable. Why is there a small sanding spot when it looks quite large? Even with a large belt width, it grinds only in the center - the part in front and behind is not used due to the fact that it is raised to feed the rollers.

    It can be turned into a grinding machine

    The wood belt sander has some special features in its operation. To reduce the depth of the furrows it leaves, it must be driven along the fibers. Then finishing sanding takes less time. And one more thing - if you get lazy while working and leave the machine in one place for a long time, a solid “hole” will form. Despite this, this is the most productive wood sander that is often used.

    Orbital (eccentric)

    An orbital sander for wood has a round sole with Velcro, onto which sandpaper discs are attached. The discs are the same as for the grinder, so they are interchangeable. There are holes in the sole of the machine to remove dust. The dust is collected in a bag, a cassette-type container; almost all models allow you to connect a construction vacuum cleaner.

    An eccentric sander allows you to process curved surfaces

    The operation of an eccentric wood sander is based on simultaneous rotation and back-and-forth movement (reciprocating motion). This achieves a fairly good speed for intermediate and finishing wood processing. When working with this type of grinder, the platform moves in a spiral or orbit. That’s why these tools are also called orbital sanders.

    Eccentric grinders are good for processing curved or profile surfaces - the machine is light in weight, makes little noise, is easy to control, and the angle of the disc allows you to reach recesses, notches, etc. With all this, she also processes large surfaces at a good pace. When installed, coarse-grain sandpaper can be used for both coarse and intermediate sanding. The speed is lower than that of the tape one, but still quite acceptable. There are such machines with different radius of movement (eccentricity) - from 3 to 8 mm. Selecting this parameter determines the main purpose (more on this below).

    There are small and compact ones, there are powerful ones with decent dimensions.

    The disadvantages of this type of machine are the inability to work in corners. The round platform simply does not fit there. Also, there is an area of uncertain sanding along the edges—it won’t be possible to sand close to a wall or vertical surface.

    Vibrating

    The vibratory sander pad can be rectangular or triangular. When working, it makes circular movements with a small amplitude - it vibrates, which gives this type of equipment its name. This wood sander is used for fine finishing - for varnishing or painting, but is characterized by low productivity.

    A vibrating wood sander with a rectangular surface allows you to process large areas, but with its help it is not possible to sand wood near vertical planes and walls - it begins to hit the obstacle. In this regard, the triangular one is more suitable for working in corners and hard-to-reach places, but you still can’t fit it tightly to the wall.

    Vibrating machine is used for finishing

    Another disadvantage of vibration devices is the so-called “lamb”. If a grain of sand or other hard fragment gets under the surface, it leaves small circles on the wood - “lambs”. It is difficult to remove these marks. You have to use increasingly finer sandpaper, gradually removing scratches. But if in the process something gets under the sole again, the process is repeated again. Therefore, before work, the surface is thoroughly cleaned and a vacuum cleaner is usually connected to quickly and timely remove foreign fragments.

    Oscillatory

    Strictly speaking, this is not a sander, but it can be used for sanding. Moreover, those places that are inaccessible for other types of machines - corners (even sharp ones), places directly next to vertical walls. For grinding, a specially shaped triangular platform is installed on the tool, on which sandpaper on a self-adhesive base is fixed.

    This is what a multifunctional renovator looks like, which has a grinding function

    During operation, the platform moves in a horizontal plane with a very small amplitude - the vertices of the triangle deviate by approximately 1.7° (this is an average of 2.5 mm). Due to this small movement, grinding occurs. This machine can be used for sanding in corners and close to vertical surfaces. Moreover, you can remove not only wood, but also smeared and dried glue. In general, an oscillating machine is used for finishing grinding in hard-to-reach places - due to low productivity and the sanding spot, it is unrealistically long to process more or less large surfaces with it.

    What type of sander to choose

    To summarize, we can say that for housework and construction work, ideally you need two sanding machines - for rough and fine finishing. The most commonly used pair is tape + eccentric. If you are planning to start making furniture, then you cannot do without an oscillator.

    If you do not like the result of the belt sander, you can purchase two orbital sanders with different eccentricities. For rough grinding, a tool with an eccentricity of 6-8 mm is suitable, for finishing grinding and even polishing - 2-4 mm. The only disadvantage of this solution is that good eccentric grinders are expensive.

    If the budget is limited, and the farm has an angle grinder, rough grinding can be done with its help, and for intermediate or finishing use orbital or vibration. Just keep in mind that vibration is the least productive, although it is the cheapest. If possible, buy an orbital one - it is more versatile and gives better results.

    How to choose a good wood sander - belt, eccentric, orbital?

    It is desirable that the purchased device has a function for adjusting the disk rotation speed; When purchasing an orbital sander, a very important parameter is the eccentric stroke. The lower this indicator, the better the process is performed, but at the same time, the higher this parameter, the faster the processing will occur.

    Standard models are characterized by a stroke of two to six millimeters. There are machines that allow you to adjust the eccentric stroke, but they are quite expensive.

    The lighter the grinding machine, the more accurate the processes performed with its help, but the processing time increases.

    Electric file

    There are special-purpose belt sanders, so-called belt files or electric files. Often used for cleaning welds and grinding materials in hard-to-reach places. Only certain equipment with a width of 9 to 30 mm is suitable for electric files. Such belt sanders weigh much lighter than conventional ones - 1-2 kg.

    How to choose a grinder

    To select any power tool, you should determine for yourself:

    • Scope and area of application. This parameter allows you to focus on a specific type of equipment and decide on accessories and equipment.
    • Intensity of use. It will help you choose the right power and number of revolutions.
    • Possibility of connecting to the network. In this case, it will be easier to decide what type of power supply the grinder should have - mains, battery, pneumatic.
    • Budget. It is decided individually, it helps to indicate to the seller the price segment in which to look for a suitable model.
    • Manufacturer. It is better to give preference to well-known brands.
    • Guarantee. Warranty conditions and availability of a service center.
    • Ergonomics. Before purchasing, you should hold the instrument in your hands. Feel how easy it will be to use.

    These are the points that will make choosing a tool easier. It should be remembered that savings on purchase may lead to additional repair costs in the future.

    Process Features

    The grinding process can be classified as a repair activity that is performed without much physical effort.

    It is much easier than puttying, painting or wallpapering. Grinding work can be divided into five stages.

    Preparation of grinding material. At this stage, you need to take care of a sufficient amount of sandpaper or mesh (depending on what you prefer).

    After all, during operation they quickly become clogged and require replacement.

    Work must begin from a corner and gradually move towards another corner. We start sanding from the ceiling to the floor.

    Main classification

    Any tool is divided into two classes: household and professional. Grinding machines are no exception:

    • Professional-grade grinding machines are reliable and durable. The tool is designed for long-term operation in simple and difficult conditions. Professional grinders are characterized by heavy weight and power, as well as high cost.
    • Household grinders are usually designed for short-term use. After 20 minutes of use, the instrument needs a rest. Household grinders are characterized by low weight and power, as well as low cost.

    There is such a thing as a semi-professional instrument. This is something between the two main classes. If you need a grinder at home for frequent use, it is better to give preference to a semi-professional class tool.
