Which motor location in an electric saw is better: longitudinal or transverse?
On sale you can find electric saws with transverse and longitudinal motors. Structurally, the engines are completely different, which cannot but affect the specifics of using the tool, its productivity and ease of use.
It is not possible to unequivocally answer the question which option is preferable and more convenient to use. First, a detailed comparative analysis of both options should be carried out, on the basis of which certain conclusions will be drawn.
Most popular manufacturers
According to market research, the most popular manufacturers of electric chainsaws are the brands listed below.
- Bosch. A manufacturer with an impeccable reputation produces high-quality equipment. The only drawback of the tools is their high cost.
- Makita. Reliable electric saws with high performance go on sale.
- Husqvarna. The Swedish manufacturer produces good quality electric saws that have a long service life.
No less popular are electrical appliances that were manufactured by the Energomash and Interskol associations.
The right balance
A properly balanced tool has a center of gravity firmly in the middle. This electric saw is easy to use. It doesn’t get pulled to the sides, and you don’t have to strain your arm muscles to hold the instrument or redistribute its weight. The correct balance is characteristic primarily of electric saws in which the motor has a longitudinal arrangement. The tool becomes a kind of extension of the hand and is optimally suited for working in hard-to-reach places, in different planes and at any angles.
Power
When choosing a saw with an electric drive, power is one of the most significant indicators. But even with the same power parameter, a tool with a transverse and longitudinal motor does not behave identically. The reason lies in the design differences of the engines.
The engine gearbox with a longitudinal arrangement is equipped with a bevel gear, which partially neutralizes the power, not fully transmitting it to the saw bar. In this regard, the efficiency decreases to an average of 85%.
Saws with a transverse motor do not have this problem; as a result, the motor transmits its power 100%.
Reliability and durability
Equipment with a transverse motor is more reliable and durable. Such an engine does not have a complex angular gearbox, which is necessary to rotate the axis of rotation by 90 degrees. Accordingly, the likelihood of such a tool breaking during operation is significantly lower.
Weight is another important parameter when choosing equipment. Since electric saws with a cross-cut motor are simpler in design, they weigh less and put less strain on your back when working with them.
Weight difference
Both types of electric saws have approximately the same weight. The weight and dimensions of the saw depend on the power (the more power, the more weight). A saw with a power of 1.8 kW will weigh up to 5 kg, with a power of 2.6 kW, the weight of the tool reaches 5.5 kg.
According to some craftsmen, when working with a longitudinal electric saw, there is a heavy load on the operator’s back and arms. The motor, that is, the main weight of the saw, is located further from the body, creating a greater load. When working with the transverse, the main weight is closer to the body, so working with it is twice as easy.

Which location is better depending on the tasks at hand?
When choosing a saw, the main thing you should focus on is the goal to achieve which the equipment is purchased.
If you plan to use the saw to form the crown of bushes or cut branches directly from trees, the choice should be made in favor of a compact model with a longitudinal slide. It is extremely mobile and indispensable when working in hard-to-reach places. It can be used at any angle and in any position.
For standard sawing of logs for subsequent chopping into firewood, a model with a transverse position is better suited. Such a saw is not only more powerful and lighter, but also cheaper in cost.

Circular saws.
An electric circular saw (commonly known as a circular saw) is designed for longitudinal and transverse sawing of wood and its derivatives (OSB, chipboard, fiberboard, MDF, plywood), the tool perfectly holds the cutting line, unlike a jigsaw. But for transverse cutting, it is worth considering the choice of saw blade, Not all discs are designed for cross cutting; you should not overuse the cross cut since the main function of a circular saw is a longitudinal cut. Also, using different types of disks, you can cut plastic and aluminum. But there is still one BUT - a circular saw cannot cut along a curved line. Also, when choosing a circular saw, you should pay attention to the diameter of the disk and the cut, most circular saws are at an angle of 90 degrees they can cut through a 50mm board, but sometimes you need to cut at 45 degrees (the same 50mm board), the diameter of the saw blade starts from 225mm and above so that you can take a 50mm board at 45 degrees. Some models have a stationary function.
Almost every user has a circular saw, a necessary thing for home and garden, but do not forget about the saw blade; most often the circular saw is killed due to a dull blade, the cutting becomes slower and the user begins to add his mighty force to speed up the sawing process, which leads to breakdown gearbox, armature and stator.

The choice is obvious - electric chain saw
In the case of electric saws, this issue is especially relevant, since these devices have a large set of technical characteristics; accordingly, there is a clear distinction between saws for specific tasks.
If we consider gardening work specifically, then both a chainsaw and an electric saw can be equally suitable. The second option has been increasingly purchased in recent years, since this device has several undeniable advantages over a chainsaw:
If you have a dacha or a country house, then an electric wood saw will definitely come in handy sooner or later. Its dimensions allow the saw to be used for a variety of purposes; there are no difficulties in operation. The most important thing is that you don’t have to think about where to get and prepare fuel.

How does a chain saw do its job?
As for the components, this is an electric motor, a driving bar, a chain with cutting teeth installed on this bar, there is also an oil pump and a container from which oil is supplied to lubricate the cutting chain.
In addition to the handle, which simplifies the operation of the device, there are two buttons, one of which is intended to turn on the device, and the second to lock the operation.
Models in the middle and high price segments may have expanded functionality, in particular, we are talking about a chain tension adjustment button. The saw cuts in this way: when turned on, the engine and oil pump start, due to which the bar moves and the chain is lubricated with oil.
What complaints do I have about the purchased saw?
Since my purchasing budget was very limited, I don’t have any big complaints about the electric saw. Still, I would like to warn you that there are some inconveniences:
1. Due to the engine “sticking out” to the left, cutting vertical trunks low above the ground is only possible on the right side. Sometimes this is a problem. But I was mentally prepared for this, as I wrote about above.
2. The chain tension screw is close to the bar. It is not comfortable.
3. When I forget to tighten the chain, it falls off and gradually destroys the plastic cover.
4. The kit includes a screwdriver key, which can be used, but is inconvenient. I recommend having better quality support tools with you.
5. I am eager to buy special oil for the chain and fill it with everything I can get my hands on. Because of this, during operation there is a taste of grease in the air; objects in front of the tire are sprayed with oil; and the remainder should be drained from the tank, otherwise it will leak out in a few days.
6. A very short power cord, which often gets pulled out of the extension cord during operation. But understanding that this is for safety reasons, I do not make “improvements” (I do not strengthen the plug in the socket, I do not “sharpen” the cable).
What do you need to know about technical specifications?
The basic characteristic that you need to take into account when choosing a particular model is engine power. Here you need to look at the intensity with which the chain saw will be used.
When you need to make a one-time cut in wood, which is more random than planned, then devices up to 2 kW are ideal for these purposes. This power is not enough for a conventional one-hour work in the garden, so here you should look at devices from 2.5 kW to 4 kW. Weight is of great importance, especially when there is a large amount of work to be done.
What to look for when choosing a power saw for your home or garden
The power tool is quite simple to operate. There is no need to refuel or worry about maintenance. When choosing an electric chain saw, you should pay attention to engine power, bar length and other equally important criteria.
Engine power
The power indicator affects the speed of pulling the saw chain and the depth of cut. Powerful models make cuts deeper in a short period of time.
If a saw is purchased for work in the country, it is worth considering amateur-class models whose power reaches 2 kW. For craftsmen who often cut materials, reliable models from the semi-professional category are suitable. Their power will reach 2.2 kW.
Note! Powerful electric saws consume a lot of energy.
Tire length
The length of the bar allows you to find out what diameter of material can be cut with a power tool. Large tires have increased resistance to engine torque. It is very important that the length of the bus matches the power of the device.
Advice! If you plan to use a power tool at home, you should choose a tire whose length reaches 30-40 cm.
Smooth start
The presence of a soft start function helps protect the engine from load when the device is turned on. To extend the life of the equipment, it is important to smoothly and gradually accelerate the engine.
Keyless chain tensioning
The power tool chain can be tensioned using a wrench or a keyless method. The first method requires a special key. With keyless tensioning, the master uses a mechanism that is built into the electric tool. This makes it possible to save time that is usually spent searching for a key.
To prevent the master’s hands from getting tired while working with the tool, it is recommended to purchase a lightweight model
Design features of chain saws
The location of the motor in the saw affects exactly how the cut will occur. The devices are produced with a transverse and longitudinal arrangement, when looking at the body. For cutting at right angles, it is better to use units with a transverse engine.
It is preferable to choose a saw with a longitudinal engine, because it is better balanced
Such a chain saw can successfully cut from top to bottom, but any other variations of work: at a right angle or from bottom to top, are not provided, so here you can note a clear misalignment in one or two positions.
There is much more balance in saws with a longitudinal engine, and it is better to choose such a device, since it will not limit the master in how he needs to work.
For ordinary gardening work in the country, it may not be worth overpaying for this tool, although you need to look at what the nature of the work will be and how much it will be.
Some models may have a protective relay against overheating. The task of which is to disconnect the tool from the network when the engine temperature exceeds a certain threshold. This can save the device from damage.
Sometimes manufacturers equip their devices with accidental activation lock buttons. We recommend choosing a saw with it, since this is a matter of safety for the master. After a certain time, the tension on the saw weakens, but some devices have a special handle for such cases. We recommend checking the tension level before starting work.
Reciprocating saws
A kind of large jigsaw with a high engine power, again a wide selection of saws (wood, metal, plastic, foam concrete). This tool is convenient for destruction :) that is, if you need to dismantle any structures, then a reciprocating saw will do the best job. The main advantage is the work with metal there are saw blades up to 30 cm (maybe more), as well as concrete, foam concrete, but saw blades for foam concrete are expensive. The main disadvantage of reciprocating saws is their cost, you can’t buy them here for a couple of thousand, professional class starts from 7-8 thousand wooden ones.
I can’t say anything about breakdowns; the tool was still new and didn’t come in for service.

I did not write about certain brands of tools (so as not to be called paid by an advertiser) if you have questions about a specific model, I will answer personally.
Thank you for reading this article, I will answer any questions you have, I’m happy to help
Nuances of work
The first thing you need to know is that the chain saw cannot work without breaks, so you need to set the mode to 20 minutes for 20 minutes, that is, first work, then rest, and work again.
We must not forget about cleaning after finishing cutting, and checking the oil level, also before cutting. You need to keep the device in a dry place, and you need to work with it in the same place, since moisture is the enemy of a chain saw.
As for workwear, there are no strict criteria, except that you need to choose something narrow, otherwise the end of the clothing may be pulled into the saw.
You can use both regular automobile oil and special mineral oil. The latter option is more preferable, but its cost may be slightly higher than that of a car.
The motor will begin to function at increased speeds, and this is already unpleasant, since if nothing is done, then after a while it will fail.
At a glance, it is not always possible to understand exactly what condition the teeth are in, but there are several indirect signs: an increase in cutting time and heterogeneity of the sawdust produced. Sharp teeth make the sawdust uniform.
What's the result?
Most likely, the budget option will be limited in terms of operation, it will be difficult to hold it for a long time due to its heaviness, and it will also probably lack a button against accidental activation and a handle for tensioning the chain.
It is still advisable to choose a device equipped with additional functions, for example, an oil indicator, as well as a universal oil supply system that can adapt to conditions.
The point is that when there is a truly practical need to work at full power, then the oil is supplied, but when the so-called idling occurs, the oil is not wasted. For such a function, you will have to overpay a little when purchasing, but in return, the owner of the device will save a significant amount of money on consumables in the future.

Why I chose electricity
I’ll say right away that I didn’t really want to deal with power tools. Although I clearly understood that I refused mobility and use anywhere, at any time, in any weather (even in the rain, even when cutting an ice hole, even far from power sources).
But other priorities turned out to be more important for me:
1. Lower price.
2. Higher level of safety due to lower power (I read on the Internet about “reverse impact”).
3. Easier to use.
5. Less noisy operation.
6. I don't want to deal with internal combustion engines.
I’ve been using an electric chain saw for 2 years now and have never once regretted not buying a gas-powered tool.

How to choose a chainsaw. what to look for when purchasing and examples of good options
The chain saw has long been popular as a tool for small sawmills. To refuel it, you do not need to buy expensive fuel, as for gasoline analogues, but it is very convenient to use. This is a great option for short-term sawing of firewood or cutting branches, and the tool is always in sight and you just need to plug the plug into the socket to get started.
How to choose a saw with enough functions and not overpay extra? We will try to answer this question by considering the main characteristics of a quality tool.
Electric saw helps cut down small amounts of wood
Do you need an electric saw?
Before you start looking at specific models, you should determine if the tool is right for you. Chainsaws may be a different story. Some people like it, others don't. No. In most cases, negative attitudes are due to the wrong choice of tool type. For example, an electric saw is unlikely to cope with hours of cutting down trees. this can only be done with a professional chainsaw. Availability of cable. Another disadvantage of an electric tool is that it is tied to a power source. However, an electric saw can be your indispensable assistant in several cases:
The device can be used indoors
With the above factors in place, you can proceed with choosing the right electric saw.
How to choose a chain saw based on engine power
Engine power is the first thing to pay attention to. This characteristic can vary significantly, but on average it is 1000-2100 W. Not only the performance of the saw, but also its durability depends on power. Assess the stability of the voltage in the electrical network, and if its surges are frequent, you should give preference to a more powerful device. This is because when the voltage drops, the motor will not be able to produce rated power and, as a result, will quickly overheat.
How to choose a power saw.
The concept of “power saw” includes a segment of electric tools designed for cutting various materials. This segment covers several types of saws for different purposes and designs.
Electric saws are popular among both professionals and amateur craftsmen. Unlike their gasoline counterparts, electric saws (like any other power tool) have a number of undeniable advantages: lightness and compactness, ease of operation and maintenance, noiselessness and the absence of harmful exhausts, which allows you to work indoors. The only limitation is the availability of an electrical network for power supply.
Tips for choosing an electric chain saw
An electric saw is the best choice for those who are no longer used to working with old-fashioned hand tools and do not want to swallow harmful exhaust from a gasoline unit. Chain devices are most popular for home use, so manufacturers offer a wide selection of such devices. Sometimes they differ greatly in performance and functionality. To purchase the device that is right for you, you should carefully consider the choice of electric saw and not lose sight of any important technical characteristics.
Choosing an electric chain saw
Using a chain device, you can easily and quickly cut a tree, prepare firewood, or trim excess branches from trees.
Electric models are lightweight, environmentally friendly and simple; chainsaws outperform them in such parameters as mobility and operating time.
Electric motors heat up quickly, so it is not advisable to use them for a long time. Electric saws depend on the availability of a network and are limited by the length of the cord, although manufacturers have overcome this disadvantage by equipping the devices with a battery.
Gasoline units can operate even in deep forests; they are not afraid of wet weather and engine overheating, but they require constant fuel costs.
One of the main requirements for any tools is their ergonomics. The power saw should fit comfortably in your hands. Otherwise, you will get tired quickly and your productivity will be quite low.
Types of power saws
Depending on the location of the motor, electric chain saws are divided into 2 types.
With a transverse engine. Such tools are mainly used for vertical cutting. A transverse engine increases the width of the device by an order of magnitude.
Electric saws with a transverse arrangement are used, as a rule, for periodic work and are characterized by low cost.
Saws with a longitudinal engine are more expensive due to the conical shape of the gearbox, but they have a long service life and greater productivity due to optimal balancing of the saw.
Such tools are considered universal: they can be used to cut wood in any direction and at any angle.
Specifications
Power . The speed and performance of the tool, as well as its price, directly depend on this parameter. The higher the power, the faster the electric saw will cope with the work. Powerful machines cut wood of any density and hardness, but some materials may be too tough for budget tools.
