Briefly about the history of the creation of the Janome brand
This year the Janome brand turns 95 years old. During this time, from a small company with about 50 people, the enterprise has grown into a concern with almost 4 thousand employees. The company's representative offices are open in 12 countries: the USA, Germany, New Zealand, Brazil, Chile, Mexico, China, Canada, Great Britain, the Netherlands, Switzerland, Australia. Production is established not only in Japan, but also in Taiwan and Thailand.
If you are interested in how Janome sewing companies are created today, watch this video: Why are Janome sewing machines so attractive to craftswomen around the world?
- High build quality. The company owns its own production of equipment and accessories. Therefore, each product is assembled as accurately as possible and has virtually no noise or “rattling.”
- Easy to use and a wide range that allows you to choose a model for any purpose. The company's production line includes more than 280 different models: from miniature machines to industrial machines.
- All products comply with ISO 9002 and 14001 quality standards.
- The company is famous for its innovative developments: Janome was the first in the world to release a computerized household sewing machine in 1979 (Memory 7), and in 1990 - a household embroidery machine - Memory Craft 8000.
And today Janome continues to amaze. For example, the Janome Horizon Memory Craft 9400 QCP sewing machine is equipped with 9 additional LEDs and a special retractable panel with a lamp. This same model has an interesting option - “hands-free”.
The presser foot automatically rises after pressing the thread trimming pedal. In addition, you can program the raising of the foot with the needle stopping in the lower position, this is very convenient if you need to unfold the material and continue stitching.
This is what the workspace of the Janome Horizon Memory Craft 9400 QCP computer sewing machine looks like. True, the cost of such a model is barely affordable for the average Russian family. As of May 2021, its price in rubles exceeded the 100,000 mark.
Operations
The Janome 1522 sewing machine was released by Janome for its centenary in several colors - dark red, dark blue, dark gray, dark green and pink. Two types of plastic are combined. The colored surface is glossy, but the working surface is a little rough, matte and pleasant to the touch. The machine has a new design, a little strict - nothing superfluous! The size of the working area has been increased, which is a definite plus. Performs 25 operations, including a buttonhole in automatic mode in one step according to the button size.

Automatic regular rectangular clothes loop. To select the length of the buttonhole, you just need to insert the button into the foot and secure it. Select the buttonhole operation, set the length parameters (loop range on the stitch length regulator) and stitch width. The width of the loop on a machine of this type is not adjustable, always 5 mm. Lower the hinge lever all the way down. Let's make a loop. But to repeat the same loop, you must turn the stitch selection knob to the RESET position, and then return the knob to its original position - the loop. And so we repeat N number of times until we have made all the loops on the product.
To re-make a buttonhole of the same size, return the stitch selection knob to RESET, then back to the buttonhole. Now press the foot pedal and sew the same loop.
The main controls for switching seams, stitch length and width are located right in the middle of the body. The first stitch selection knob. One letter corresponds to two types of lines.
To proceed to the operations of the second (bottom) row, you need to switch the stitch length regulator to the “SS” position. The stitch length in this sector is adjustable from “+” to “-“. The stitch length of the top row stitches is adjustable from 0 to 4 mm. This regulator is located in the middle. On the right is the stitch width adjuster. Its range is from 0 to 5 mm, the width on the lines of both the top and bottom rows changes smoothly. The operating instructions for the machine contain detailed recommendations for all stitches.
The upper thread tension regulator is, as usual, located on the right side of the front panel. The most commonly used tension is from 3 to 5. The manufacturer has highlighted these numbers with squares. Most often we sew at 4-5, but we use tension 3 on satin stitch or when sewing buttonholes.
And that's all Janom! We study the types of sewing machines by type of control
However, if you are worried that Janome produces products only for Rockefeller's daughters, you are very mistaken. In the line of models you can find models starting from 8 thousand rubles. It all depends on the “filling”, the material of the body and the type of control of the machine.
Mechanical
There are no pure mechanical models in the company’s modern line. These are the usual foot- or hand-operated machines; such models, of course, were once produced by Janome.
For those who have forgotten, here they are, familiar to many residents of the USSR, mechanical models.
Electromechanical
Today, the most inexpensive and popular are electromechanical models. In fact, these are the great-grandchildren of the same mechanical models, only with an electric drive. They are considered the most popular on the market due to their simplicity, reliability and low cost. The price of models depends primarily on the set of functions.
Electromechanical models are not very capricious and can “eat” any fabric. Such models have several types of stitching in their arsenal, including seams for decorative design. Especially for the Russian market, Janome has released a new model, Russian Style 2019s.
The “a la Russe” model has a full range of functions to embody the creative ideas of Russian craftswomen. Performs 19 sewing operations, including decorative and overlock stitches for processing cuts. The machine bed is made of steel; a distinctive feature of the model is a marking ruler in the working area in centimeters; in addition, the presser foot lifting mechanisms have an additional stage, which allows you to work with fabrics of almost any thickness.
The new product has already gone on sale; the cost of this model as of May 2018 is 15,900 rubles.
Electronic
The electronic type is reminiscent of electromechanical machines, but such devices are supplemented with electronic units responsible for regulating the sewing speed and needle direction. Such machines perform on average up to 25 sewing operations.
The Janome Art Decor 724E electronic sewing machine is a universal machine for performing different tasks. The only but significant drawback of electronic models is the lack of protection against power failures.
Cars - computers
Computerized machines operating with the help of microprocessors, which contain programs responsible for selecting stitches, material, loops and other nuances during sewing, are in great demand. These devices are equipped with convenient displays that display all the necessary information, making the work process much easier.
Among the new products this year we can highlight the already mentioned Janome Horizon Memory Craft 9400 QCP sewing machine, which is capable of covering up to 350 different operations.
Janome Horizon Memory Craft 9400 QCP allows you to perform volumetric embroidery and also stitch together parts of different volumes and thicknesses. This new product is in demand among quilters. In addition to the additional spot lighting that we already mentioned today, to the right of the needle the machine has a wider working space so that all the sewing parts can be comfortably placed.
The quality of stitching of parts of different thicknesses is also facilitated by the AcuFeed™ Flex double feed system, which allows you to create perfect stitches even on thick, multi-layered fabrics.
In addition, computer models can perform many tasks without human intervention, and the speed of such models can be 1060 stitches per minute. A large touch screen will help you navigate in choosing the desired operation, as well as control the operation of the machine. You can see how the machine works in this video

The Janome company also produces convenient overlockers, which are impossible to do without if you need to carefully finish the edges of the fabric. There is also a range of needle punching machines.
Needle punching machine Janome FM 725 for felting.
Criterias of choice
In order to make the right choice, it is necessary to clearly define which operations will be performed on the machine. The Janom company offers a large selection of specific areas that may not be needed in your work. Some overlockers and coverlockers perform 20-27 operations. Many models have a computer program that performs all functions. Such sewing equipment is indispensable in production, in professional workshops; it is less often used at the household level. When using the machine as an amateur, most professional operations are not performed. There is no point in overpaying for something that will not be in demand.
The basic rules for choosing a sewing machine should be:
- Demand for the proposed functions.
- Speed of work.
- Shuttle location.
- Engine power consumption.
- Easy to maintain.
- Machine dimensions.
- Reliability.
- The quality of the operations performed.
- Ease of replacing faulty parts (both technical and the ability to purchase the right item in a store).
- Illuminated working surface.
Also, the choice should be made based on financial capabilities. The most expensive thing is not always the best.
Janon's affordable sewing machines are not inferior in quality and reliability to expensive options.
All models of the company are characterized by automatic winding of the thread onto the bobbin, the presence of various paws for performing the corresponding operations, and instructions in Russian.
Regardless of the model, all machines are equipped with convenient needle threaders, covers, and a set of tools for minor repairs.
When choosing, special attention should be paid to the speed of operation. The principle - the faster the better, justifies itself in computer models of sewing machines or with experienced professionals. A novice seamstress may not have enough skill to cope with high feed speeds. In this case, situations are possible in which the seams on the product will have to be flogged and corrected. When working with delicate fabrics, this leads to damage to the product that cannot be repaired.
An important point is the possibility of service and store guarantees.
How to choose a Janome sewing machine
There are many factors to consider when choosing the right sewing machine. Let's look at them in more detail.
Pay attention to the material of the body and internal parts
More budget Janome models are made of plastic. This applies to both the body and some accessories, primarily bobbins and feet. Sometimes models are specially equipped with transparent plastic attachments to make it easier to control the sewing process. Of course, metal models will be more durable and more “smooth” in use. After all, any seamstress knows that the heavier the machine, the less noise and vibration it creates during operation.
Pay attention to the integrity of all parts and assemblies before purchasing. And also on the quality of packaging.
IMPORTANT ! The standard machine package includes a minimum number of needles and accessories. The necessary parts will have to be purchased separately in the future.
How to choose power and what other characteristics may play a role when choosing a sewing machine?
Most Janome models are equipped with a special power regulator. However, in cheaper models the user has no choice. For thin fabrics, a budget option with a minimum power level is ideal. Such models can cope with hemming curtains or trousers.
If you are planning to purchase a universal machine that can handle almost any type of fabric, you should pay attention to other models, including the Janome Jem (we'll talk about it a little later). Their cost is higher, but at the same time they can be used to sew things from leather, drape and other dense materials.
Sewing speed
This is another important factor that directly depends on the power of the device. If the machine is equipped with a pedal, the speed will change depending on the pressure applied. The speed of the work itself is affected by the type of shuttle, which can be vertical, horizontal or swinging.
The latter type is usually equipped with inexpensive new devices; they do not allow you to develop too high a speed. The horizontal type of shuttle is usually equipped with middle-class models; it makes work more convenient and produces seams of improved quality. Using vertical shuttles you can create perfect seams, but only the most expensive machines are equipped with them.
Types of stitches
Most often, all available stitch types are indicated on a special rotary wheel or lever. Each model has its own version of the stitch selection mechanism.
ADVICE!
If you are purchasing a budget device, it is best to choose a machine with a small number of stitches, since this will result in much higher sewing quality.
For additional functions and equipment
The more additional functions a machine has, the higher the cost. If the purchase will be used once a year for sewing curtains, there is no need for an expensive and multi-purpose model. If the housewife is going to set up a small workshop, it’s worth splurging on good equipment. The same principle applies to choosing a price category.
Make sure that you always have screwdrivers at home with suitable tips and special oil for lubricating parts. The most important issue is the terms of warranty service. Janome guarantees free service for the first two years for any breakdown. And another year for sewing machines on internal mechanisms if they fail.
The company’s service center specialists will help you set up the equipment if you have any problems during the service process, and will explain the operating principle of some parts of the Janome sewing machine. It would also be a good idea to study the operating instructions.
The best Janome sewing machines
Sewing machines that operate from a mechanical drive (manual) are already a rarity. However, Russian needlewomen and seamstresses give them special preference. Like all Janome machines, the 1522 model has a free sleeve. You just need to pull the retractable table (also called a removable platform) to the left.
Advantages of free arm sewing. Fabric does not gather around the needle when creating bartacks to reinforce pockets, slits and waistbands. It is convenient to process sleeves, waist area, trousers and other products in a circle. It's easy to darn socks or apply patches to knees, elbows or any baby clothes.
But the table itself has been increased in size, due to which the working area of the machine has also increased. Also inside the table there is a very convenient place for storing accessories.
For spools of thread, two vertical metal rods are installed on the body. One of them has a hole in the middle. Place the spool of thread on the right rod, pass it through the hole in the left rod and then follow the threading pattern. This is done so that the thread does not get tangled and is fed evenly. Black felt pads are initially glued to the body and serve to reduce noise when unwinding the thread from the spool.
To sew with a double needle, we use both rods at once. We thread the threads in the same way according to the same pattern. Only at the very end one thread will go into the left needle, and the other into the right.
If they bother you while storing the machine, simply lower them down into the body.
On the left side there is a pressure regulator for the presser foot on the fabric. For normal sewing, the regulator should be set to 3. Reduce the presser foot pressure to 2 when creating appliqué, darning, basting, and embroidery for better maneuverability of the fabric. When working with delicate fabrics (velvet, knitted, loose knitwear), the regulator is set to 1. A very convenient knife for cutting thread protrudes on the left side of the body.
Below is a very convenient knife for cutting threads.
A very convenient manual needle threader will help you thread the thread into the eye of the needle. In order for the refill to work correctly, the needle must be raised to the highest possible position using the flywheel. Only then lower the tanker. Otherwise, you can bend the small hook on the threader, which pulls out the thread. You should also pay special attention to the flywheel. It can only be turned towards you.
To perform the fastening, the machine has a reverse lever. Press and hold it while sewing. The machine will sew in reverse. After you release the lever, it will start sewing forward again.
The reverse lever is located on the right side of the machine body.
The cover of the Janome 1522 sewing machine protects against dust. Made from thick fabric and has a rigid frame. Such cases are called semi-rigid.
Noise
We also tested the Janome 1522 sewing machine for noise. The noise pressure level of 68.3 dBA is a fairly good result for a machine with a vertical shuttle. It is worth noting that for this class of sewing machines, very quiet operation is rather an exception.
The measurements were taken at home. The sewing machine was located on a wooden table. The MS 6708 sound level meter is installed at a distance of 40 cm from the sewing machine. Sound level meter error ± 1.5 dbA. Our measurement should not be compared with tables of average values, because measurements were made exclusively according to our specifications.

Despite the advantages, the new model also has disadvantages. And this has to do with the configuration. There is no oil can, no screwdrivers, no cleaning brush. Among the feet, I would like to see an overlock foot (for finishing the edge of the fabric), a foot for knitwear, for a hidden zipper. As practice shows, today you can’t live without these paws! To cope with elastic fabrics, multi-layered items and leather, we recommend purchasing an upper conveyor. For thick fabrics, we recommend purchasing needles for jeans and leather, and for elastic ones - stretch or jersey needles. There are quite a few needle manufacturers now, but we prefer Organ and Schmetz. Again, the instructions have a good table of the ratio of thread numbers, type of fabric and needles. You can purchase paws and needles separately. The entire range is on our website.
