Why know the weight of the microwave
Let’s say right away that the mass of household microwave ovens with a volume of 20 liters differs significantly:
- Minimum weight – about 8 kg.
- Maximum weight is about 20 kg.
Does device specific data matter? Of course, since it will have to be taken into account more than once.
When purchasing, you have already decided why you are purchasing a special stove. If this is a purchase for permanent use in the kitchen, then you need to find a place for it. And here we cannot do without taking into account mass. After all, you will have to choose suitable brackets or take care of the reliability of the shelf prepared for the microwave. And different weights place different demands on them.
What if the owner of the microwave rents a house? Yes, and also changes addresses? This means that weight becomes important for him not only during installation, but also when transporting the unit.
Just like when buying a stove for a daughter or son who will live in a student dormitory.
There will be other cases when you will need to know and take into account the weight of the SHF: moving, repair or rearrangement, equipping a country house, etc.
Thus, each buyer can determine in advance whether he needs a lighter device or whether the weight will not often remind him of itself.

What determines the weight of a microwave oven?
Now let’s try to understand why the mass of different microwave ovens is so different.
To do this, we need to understand what the weight of devices depends on.
Dimensions
It is not difficult to understand that, first of all, the weight of a microwave directly depends on its size.
Important! The smaller the microwave, the lighter it is.
And the size of the inner chamber, in turn, affects the size of the dishes that will fit in it.
Depending on the parameters, there are 3 types of microwave ovens .
Stationary models of different sizes
Such products are installed on a tabletop, window sill, special shelf or bracket. The weight of standard microwave ovens that stand alone is about 15 kg.
The weight of a particular device can vary either less (10–12 kg) or more (up to 20 kg). It depends on the volume and capabilities of the ovens.
Built-in microwaves
They are supposed to be placed in a special niche, which is provided for them in the kitchen set.
Their weight is similar to that of free-standing stoves. And it depends on the same conditions: the size of the capacity and equipment.
Portable microwave ovens
As the name suggests, they belong to the group of the most compact and lightweight devices.
After all, they are designed for frequent transportation and use not only in the home kitchen, but also on the road. For example, when connecting to a car battery. The weight of such devices is from 5 to 7 kg.
Important! The smallest and lightest microwaves are designed for heating, not cooking.
Materials used in the manufacture of the device
What the device is made of is also important. The first units were bulky and made entirely of metal. It is not surprising that the weight of this equipment was very substantial. The earliest models reached 100 kg or more!
Today, control units have become compact, which has significantly reduced the weight of devices.
But some manufacturers decided not to stop there. To reduce their own production costs, they use plastic parts instead of metal components. Moreover, high-quality and durable materials are not always used.
Important! Thanks to plastic elements, microwaves are becoming lighter and cheaper. However, such parts are inferior in quality and fail more often.
The emergence of the microwave
The first microwave oven was the child of the American inventor Percy Spencer. The model was produced at the Raytheon military plant, which at that time had an extensive radar production facility. The name of this stove “Radarange” was formed based on the place where it appeared. The height and weight of the microwave were impressive in its scale - the height was about human height, and its heaviness reached 340 kg. Its power exceeded today's microwave ovens and reached 3 kV. This model became very hot during operation, so the device had to be cooled using the main water supply network.
Microwave the size of a man
The invention found application among the military and was widely used in hospitals and civilian institutions. It mainly served as defrosting and heating food.
Later, Tappan, Toshiba and Sharp tried to improve the appearance of the device and reduce its size. The American manufacturer Tappan and Raytheon manage to create desktop versions, among them the RL-1, MarkV2 are famous. Their choice is not large, but the production of hundreds of such devices has already begun.
Desktop model - MarkV2
How much do different types of microwaves weigh?
Another and very important point that significantly affects the weight of a microwave oven is their functionality.
Today, with the help of familiar stoves, you can perform different actions. They can not only heat up, but also stew, bake, and fry foods. For this purpose, the devices are equipped with various parts. The more of them in the microwave, the heavier it becomes.
- Simple devices – up to 15 kg;
- Not the most powerful solo microwaves are lighter than average: 11–12 kg.
- Replacing the transformer with an inverter, which powers the magnetron, also made the stove lighter - about 11 kg.
- But equipping with a grill and convector adds kilograms. Such microwaves weigh from 18 to 25 kg.
Now, when choosing a microwave, you can choose a model whose weight will be optimal.

How much does a microwave oven weigh and what does the weight of the microwave depend on?
All devices operating on microwaves are divided into 2 categories based on the type of housing - free-standing, built-in. In each category, depending on the set of functions, technologies used, and sizes, there are several types:
- Portable. The main differences from others are their miniature size and low power. Often equipped with handles, they are powered by batteries or other devices using a USB cable. Designed for hiking, use in the country, while traveling, in the car.
- Solo. Miniature, with a minimum set of capabilities - heating and defrosting. It is best to buy such models for offices, rented apartments, and small kitchens.
- Standard. The functions are most often the same as those of a solo, the difference is in power and internal volume, respectively, the dimensions are larger.
- Convection. Here the ability to cook poultry, meat or vegetables on the grill is already added. In addition to standard heating, you can prepare full meals with a crispy crust.
- Inverter. There is no transformer inside these devices, but there is a mechanism that regulates power. Due to the design features, the sizes do not differ much from the standard ones, but you can save time by improving the quality of the prepared food.
- Multifunctional. Most often they are large in size, high in cost, and have almost unlimited capabilities. They combine microwave, grill, convection, steamer, and toaster technologies.
On a note!
Microwave ovens are also produced with different designs and control options. Small models are equipped with carrying handles. The simpler the control panel, the fewer parts there are and the lower the price.
Features and advantages of microwave ovens
How much does a cube of sand weigh?
The main advantage of a microwave oven is speed. Thanks to this, you can minimize the amount of time spent heating food and defrosting food. The number of products that can be placed inside at a time depends on the dimensions of the device. The latter - from the internal volume of the microwave, and from this - the diameter of the turntable.
Today, microwave ovens of different sizes and capacities are available on the market. The smallest microwaves have a volume of 8.5 liters, and the largest - 40 liters:
- Devices with a small volume (up to 15 liters) are perfect for 1-2 people.
- If you have a small family or you just like to eat well, then the right decision would be to purchase a device with a capacity of 15 to 30 liters.
- Ovens with large parameters (up to 40 l) are designed for large families and the preparation of complex dishes.
Small microwaves come in several types:
- Those ovens that use only microwave radiation to heat food are called solo models. The functionality of such devices is somewhat limited. At the same time, they do not take up much space in the kitchen and do an excellent job of their direct responsibilities - heating and defrosting food.
- Models with wide functionality and great internal capabilities are called microwave ovens. Here the process is based on electromagnetic radiation. The internal dimensions of devices of this class can reach 20 liters.
Remember that it is the size of the stove that determines its functionality and cost. Before purchasing, clearly define the tasks that the microwave should perform.
Devices are divided not only by size, but also by scope and installation method:
- The most common models that are installed in homes and offices are stationary. They are designed for use at home.
- For those who often move or go on hikes, portable (mobile) stoves are an excellent option.
Portable microwave oven
When purchasing a microwave, pay attention to the heating element. Experts recommend opting for devices with a heating element made of quartz
A model with a quartz element will save energy and also contribute to the formation of a delicate crust on dishes.
The best models with convection
The grill makes the microwave more functional and convenient. However, at times it is not enough to prepare the desired dish. Food cooked in a microwave with the convection function turns out much tastier. Fans will disperse hot air throughout the chamber, which guarantees high quality cooking.
Let's look at the three best models with convection.
Kaiser M 2500 ElfEm
Kaiser M 2500 ElfEm
- microwave power - 900 W;
- volume - 25 l;
- weight - 14.3 kg.
Third place goes to the Kaiser microwave oven. Externally, it is a combination of vintage and modern. From the first it got the “golden” design, but from the second it got touch control and multifunctionality.
Inside this microwave oven you can find a quartz grill with a power of 1000 W. Also, among other things, there is convection with a power of 2300 W. The power of the microwaves themselves is 900 W.
The microwave oven itself can offer five programs. In addition, you can combine grilling with other modes.
The chamber cover is made of stainless steel. It is easy to clean from traces of fat.
A volume of 25 liters is enough for the average family of 2-3 people.
- original design;
- spacious chamber;
- long service life;
- good power;
- possibility of combining modes;
- easy to open the door.
- touch display of average quality;
- high price.
Kaiser M 2500 ElfEm
Samsung MC28H5135CK
- microwave power - 900 W;
- volume - 28 l;
- weight - 12.5 kg.
One of the best microwave ovens is the MC28H5135CK from Samsung. She has many positive traits, which is why she is often purchased.
First of all, it has a good grilling power of 1500 W. It can also offer six radiation levels. The presence of auto-defrost and automatic cooking functions greatly simplifies the life of the housewife.
The black glossy surface inside the chamber and grill needs to be cleaned frequently because the gloss is very easily soiled.
- multifunctionality;
- antibacterial coating inside;
- large chamber capacity;
- there are several power levels;
- microwaves are distributed evenly.
- Cleaning the grill is usually difficult;
- the door is difficult to open.
Dimensions and functionality
The compact size of the microwave fits especially well into small kitchens. In modern kitchens, every centimeter counts, into which all appliances need to be accommodated compactly and functionally.
In order for the equipment to organically fit into the interior with its dimensions, fit into the prepared place “like a native one” and generally look harmonious against the general background, it is important to know the standard dimensions of microwave ovens. Built-in appliances take up less space
Built-in appliances take up less space
Of the entire huge range of household appliances with microwave radiation, two large groups can be distinguished:
- built-in microwave ovens;
- free-standing microwave ovens.
Each group has its own characteristics, from size and weight to functionality and cost.
Freestanding ovens
Freestanding microwaves are considered the most common. And there are a number of reasons for this. However, they can be divided into two subgroups:
Photo Description
Solo ovens
They are characterized by a minimal set of functions, high-frequency radiation and small dimensions.
Microwave ovens with electromagnetic radiation
As a rule, the functionality of such devices is very diverse, but the sizes are average.
Free-standing stoves are very popular due to the many variations in their placement
The table contains information about the standard parameters of free-standing microwave ovens:
PhotoInstructions
Solo stoves
This is a small microwave of small size and capacity. The parameters of all solo stoves are approximately the same:
- internal volume - 8 liters;
- height - 30 cm;
- depth - 30 cm;
- width - 45 cm.
Such a baby can be easily hidden in a wall kitchen cabinet, and it won’t take up much space even on the countertop. The price of a solo stove is very affordable and much more attractive than older models.
But you have to pay for compactness with a limited set of functions (heating and defrosting) and extremely low capacity (no more than 2 servings).
Standard microwaves
This is the most popular type on the market with medium capacity and a sufficient range of functions.
Standard microwave size:
- 17–25 liters - volume of the internal chamber;
- height - 30–35 cm;
- depth - 40–45 cm;
- width - about 50 cm.
The values indicated are averages and may vary depending on the model and manufacturer, but do not exceed these figures.
Built-in ovens
As for built-in models, they are more functional, expensive and spacious. Such equipment is built into cabinet kitchen furniture, organically fitting into the interior and saving usable space and work surface.
Built-in microwave ovens don't have to be expensive
The standard dimensions of a microwave oven in this category range within the following limits:
- capacity of the internal chamber - up to 42 liters;
- height - 30–45 cm;
- depth - up to 60 cm;
- width - 45–60 cm.
So, have you already realized that the sizes of built-in models can vary from medium to large? It depends on the model and manufacturer. And in order not to make mistakes in the calculations, it is advisable, before going to the store, to take your own measurements of the prepared niche for the equipment and check it with the dimensions of the microwave.
Why information about dimensions is useful
First of all, the dimensions allow you to determine whether this model will fit in your kitchen. If the purchase is planned after repair or to replace an old device, you will have to take into account existing conditions. For those who have thought about the choice in advance, it is possible to provide special niches during repair work or select a built-in model that meets all needs.
Microwaves have firmly entered the lives of modern residents of megacities and small towns and have ceased to be a means...
But dimensions are not only about beauty and convenience; they depend on the number of functions, the possible volume of cooking or heating food. The greater the height, depth, width, the greater the volume of the bowl and the number of modes. Small models heat or defrost very small portions, designed for 1-2 people. Usually, a portable microwave or a standard free-standing one, designed for 8-12 liters, is enough for this.
For a family with 1-2 children, it is better to take those with an internal chamber from 12 to 17 liters, a width of at least 50 cm, a depth of 40 cm, a height of 30-35 cm. For large families, built-in microwave ovens are suitable, in which you can cook food up to 42 liters. Here you will have to allocate space up to 65 cm in width, 60 cm in depth, up to 45 cm in height
On a note!
In addition to dimensions, it is necessary to take into account the free space around. There must be ventilation on all sides, the oven must not be pushed too tightly against walls or other equipment, and the door must also be allowed to open freely.
What criteria should you use to select a microwave?
How much does a brick weigh?
Before making your final choice, you need to pay attention to the following important points:
- Chamber volume. It should be remembered that the choice of this parameter depends on the number of people in the family who are planned to be fed. What is enough for one person may not be enough for the whole family. A small microwave will never be able to accommodate large dishes, and, accordingly, food. The average option would be a 25-30 liter stove for a family of three. For one person, a microwave with a volume of 12-15 liters will be sufficient.
- Power. Everything is very simple here: the larger this parameter, the more quickly the process of heating, cooking or defrosting food will proceed. But we must immediately warn you: the higher the power, the more energy will be burned. The lowest power in standard ovens is 450 W, and in more expensive and multifunctional ovens it reaches 1680 W.
- Built-in functions. Of course, the more capabilities a microwave is equipped with, the more expensive and larger it will end up being. Standard tasks that any microwave is designed to perform are defrosting, heating and cooking simple dishes. Additional functions may include: grilling, maintaining a certain temperature, toaster, steam cooking, step-by-step preparation of various dishes and much more. Of course, all these additional features come at a cost.
- Process control system. The fact is that more budget microwave options have rather banal controls (a couple of switches or buttons), which, in principle, is their advantage. After all, simple control does not require any specific skills or knowledge. Moreover, the simpler the control, the greater the likelihood that the equipment will serve its owner for a long time. As for the tactile (electronic) control of microwave ovens with touch screens, they are also quite reliable, but very inconvenient. And as practice shows, such furnaces fail much faster.
- And another important selection criterion is the material from which the internal coating of the microwave is made. For example, an enameled internal coating will cost much less than bioceramics or stainless steel. Although it is much more unpretentious in maintenance and more durable, unlike its analogues. It’s just that the bioceramic coating of the microwave chamber has unique antibacterial properties, and stainless steel is highly durable. Each type of coating has its own advantages and certain disadvantages.
Having an idea of the various parameters of microwave ovens and their varieties, you can make the right choice in favor of reliability and quality.

What does the size of the microwave affect?
When analyzing dimensions, it is worth taking into account external parameters and internal volume. With a successful ratio of these values, the equipment will look good in the interior and become a good helper in the kitchen. With small dimensions, the oven can only heat or defrost a couple of portions. For a wider selection of options, it is better to choose one with enough space inside the case for all the parts and microcircuits. To fit a whole chicken or a large cooking dish also requires a lot of space inside.
If a microwave oven is chosen as a replacement for a kitchen stove, the dimensions cannot be miniature. To perform all tasks, you will additionally need a grill and convection function. To ensure smooth operation and no heating of the case, manufacturers increase the overall dimensions to avoid short circuits or ignition due to lack of air circulation inside.
On a note!
The larger the size of the model and the set of functions, the stronger the case should be. It is better to choose metal or a combined model. Plastic is less resistant to stress during long-term cooking, but can withstand rapid heating.
Popular models and standard sizes of LG microwave ovens
The model range of this microwave oven manufacturer is wide and varied. The devices are easy to operate, even with extensive functionality. In the LG microwave oven you can equally easily defrost chicken or make yogurt, heat hodgepodge or cook steamed cutlets.
The models have an interesting design; it is easy to choose an external design that matches the chosen interior. Oven doors can have both side and top openings, which contributes to more comfortable use at different installation levels of microwave ovens.
Microwave ovens with a depth of up to 30 cm are distinguished by an affordable price and good quality. The height of such models ranges from 27 to 30 cm, and the width is 47-49 cm. Among them there are both built-in and free-standing models. Such devices can only have a tape recorder or a grill.
LG microwave ovens have an original design and fit well into any interior
Large-sized stoves from this manufacturer, with a volume of 25–28 liters, are especially popular. They have a large range of functions and can easily replace ovens. In them, thanks to convection, you can bake delicious products and grill chicken with a golden brown crust.
The overall dimensions of such furnaces usually increase most often due to height and width. For example, the LG MJ3965AIS model with grill and convection has the following parameters: height - 32.5 cm, width - 54 cm, depth - 52.3 cm.
Helpful advice! When choosing a microwave with the maximum range of possible functions, you should take into account that it will be a device with high power, and therefore a high level of energy consumption.
Microwave power: which is the best device model
In order to make the right choice of device, you need to understand in advance why exactly you need it. The range of functions that a microwave oven performs is quite wide. However, it may happen that you only use some of them. So why buy a model that is more expensive than one that is cheaper, although it does not perform functions that you do not need.
What is the best microwave power is not difficult to answer. It is this indicator that affects the quality of the functions performed by the device. Therefore, the more tasks a device can perform, the higher its power rating should be.
Judging by the parameters, the larger the microwave, the more powerful it is, in theory. Although some brands can be tricky with this indicator.
The functions that a microwave can perform depend on its power.
The main functions that a microwave oven can perform:
- Defrosting food;
- Warming up food;
- Cooking according to recipes;
- Convection mode;
- Grill function;
- Built-in bread maker;
- Built-in steamer;
- Steam cleaning.
Panasonic models also use inverter technology, its essence is approximately similar to convection, but consumes significantly less energy.
Which microwave to choose: understanding the complex device
The operating principle of a microwave oven is based on its main element, which is called a magnetron. This device is widely known to everyone who is familiar with radar devices. It was thanks to him that humanity received such an effective and simple device for heating and cooking food. Today it is successfully used in almost every home.
How to choose a microwave oven? Which device should I choose so that it meets quality and all safety requirements, and is an excellent assistant in the home? Let's try to understand these issues.
This device works as follows: a magnetron produces microwave waves, which are converted into heat. The power sources for these positions are so-called anode-heat transformers. It is because of them that the prices of microwave ovens are so high. These stabilizers are the most expensive and important element of the furnace.
When choosing a microwave for your home, pay attention to its technical data
Criteria for choosing a microwave oven:
- Price. There is no point in buying a very expensive stove. Models with an average price are no worse.
- Internal chamber volume. Determine the option that suits you based on the number of family members.
- Microwave power. The larger the chamber volume, the more powerful the oven should be.
- Coating. The service life and methods of caring for the device depend on it.
Appearance and other parameters are a purely individual matter. Here you can choose according to your taste and desire.
What parameters are included in the size of microwave ovens?
Before purchasing, you need to know exactly all the important parameters and sizes, so that later you don’t have to be disappointed or return the product. First of all, you need to analyze:
- width, sometimes the dimensions of the entire case are slightly smaller than the front panel (this is more common in built-in models), in which case it is important to take into account a larger indicator;
- length (distance from front to back wall);
- height (must be counted from the bottom wall to the lid, if there are legs, they are also taken into account);
- internal volume (measured in liters, in fact this is the space for dishes; the larger the indicator, the more portions fit inside);
- weight (you need to know how much the microwave weighs if it stands on a shelf or stand so that the structure can withstand it and not break).
On a note!
There is no need to evaluate the dimensions visually; each model has a passport in which all the numbers are clearly indicated. Before purchasing, you need to find a place in the kitchen for the device, know the possible parameters in order to choose based on measurements.
Advantages of a 40 cm wide microwave oven
The variety of models of goods in this category presented in the Techport online store has a number of advantages:
- convenient location (on a table, shelf, kitchen cabinet, window sill, etc.);
- ease of care (less surface contamination);
- ease of control (no extra buttons, optimal set of functions);
- efficiency (lower electricity consumption due to power in the range of 700-900 Watts);
- low price (compared to large-sized models).
What are the advantages of bioceramic coating
The internal coating of the microwave can be enameled, stainless steel or ceramic. Stainless steel is considered the most durable. Enamel and stainless steel are cheaper, but more difficult to clean.
One of the main advantages of bioceramics is antibacterial properties. In addition, it is quite durable, retains heat well, allows you to spend less electricity and is easy to clean. The bioceramic chamber is especially convenient in ovens with grills, where you often have to wash off grease from the walls.
Select from the catalog
Parameters that you should pay attention to when choosing
To use the device truly comfortably, you need to study the principle of its installation and operation, and check whether all the necessary components are included.
Control system
The oven may use rotary mechanical, rotary tact, push-button or touch switches.
Mechanical control is considered the most reliable and insensitive to power outages.
Experts do not recommend purchasing models with touch buttons if you plan to use the oven exclusively for heating food.
Embedding rules
The grill and convection oven may become hot, so keep the appliance away from surfaces that could be affected by heat and hot steam.
Equipment
The microwave oven comes complete with a glass dish, a coupling that rotates it, instructions, a warranty card and a cable for connecting the device to the network.
Grill and convection appliances usually come with two grates on stands: high and low.
If the oven supports the steaming function, a special container should be included with it.
Some manufacturers include plastic containers for storing and heating food.
They can also provide a special dish for creating a crispy crust, a lid to prevent fat from splashing, etc.
Culinary functionality
Microwave ovens have different feature sets, so before purchasing, it is important to check whether the appliance's performance meets your expectations.
Power and energy efficiency
Power affects the speed of cooking. For different models it can vary from 600 to 1200 W.
This setting can be adjusted depending on the type of product.
When purchasing a microwave oven, you need to balance its energy efficiency with the capabilities of your wiring.
The simplest microwave consumes from 0.5 to 1.5 kW, with a grill - from 1.5 to 2.8 kW, with grill and convection - from 2 to 3 kW.
The characteristics of the device must indicate the energy efficiency class. The most economical: A, A+, A++, B and C.
To reduce costs, you need to turn off the device from the network.
Security questions
Your microwave oven may have a safety device built into it to prevent children from accidentally turning it on.
When this function is activated, the device cannot be used until the lock is removed.
Design
The microwave oven should fit harmoniously into the interior of the kitchen.
When choosing a built-in model, it is worth considering that only the front side of the device will be visible.
Inner coating
The walls of the working chamber of a microwave oven can be covered with ceramics, enamel, stainless steel or bioceramic enamel.
The most commonly used coating is enamel. It is wear-resistant and easy to clean.
But enamel cannot be exposed to high temperatures, so this material is not suitable for models with oven functions.
The ceramic and bioceramic coating is durable and smooth.
Stainless steel looks aesthetically pleasing and can withstand any temperature, but this material is more difficult to maintain.
Burnt fat is difficult to remove, and if you use abrasives, scratches will remain.
To simplify the process of caring for stainless steel, it is recommended to cover the plates with special lids.
Criterias of choice
First of all, when choosing, you need to take into account the required set of options. It’s better to honestly admit to yourself how popular the modes offered by the manufacturer will be, for which you will have to pay a large sum. When there are new products or something seems very necessary and attractive, there is a high probability that in fact, after a couple of attempts, all this will not be in demand. Other parameters will depend on the size of the family and the available space in the kitchen.
- capacity (internal volume in liters);
- power (the more, the faster you can cook or heat food, but electricity consumption will also increase), on average ranges from 700 to 1000 W;
- modes (the more there are, the higher the price; if you want “everything at once”, it is better to take a multifunctional device with convection and grill);
- type of control (with simple mechanical switches and buttons, ovens are cheaper, but easy to operate and last a long time), but electronics and sensors add capabilities;
- coating (enamel, bio-ceramics, stainless alloy or a combined composition - everyone will choose their own, there are no clear recommendations here);
- weight (this must be taken into account if the microwave is installed on brackets or a shelf).
On a note!
If the purchase is being chosen as a gift for parents, it is better not to buy complex mechanisms with touch buttons and complex programs; there is a high probability that it will be difficult for them to master this technique.
Power
The power of microwave ovens can be from 500 to 1500 W. The higher the power, the faster the dish will be heated or cooked. There are also ovens with power control - quite convenient, you can quickly heat them up and carefully defrost them.
Camera coating
A very important factor. The service life and ease of cleaning the inner surface of the microwave depend on it. Types of coverage can be divided into three categories:
- Enamel. The most familiar and frequently encountered material. Due to its low cost, all inexpensive devices are covered with it. The advantages include low cost and ease of maintenance. But there are significant drawbacks - the coating is fragile, and over time, cracks form due to temperature changes.
- Stainless steel. More expensive and durable material, usually used in middle-class models. It reacts more calmly to temperatures, but is more demanding in terms of care. Here you will have to buy special cleaning products.
- Ceramics and bioceramics. Perhaps the best camera coating material at the moment. Easy to clean, resistant to temperature changes, strong and durable. There is only one minus - the cost of such a device is twice as high as others.
Volume
Based on volume, microwave ovens can be divided into three types:
- small. The volume of such ovens is usually from 8.5 to 20 liters. You can make sandwiches in them, heat water for tea or coffee, and so on. This is a solo device;
- average. This includes stoves with a volume of 21 to 27 liters. Here the manufacturer already adds some functions, sometimes grill and convection. Such a device will be quite sufficient for a family of 2 or 3 people;
- big. It's practically an oven. The displacement of such a stove can reach 42 liters. Additional functions are definitely provided here.
Functional
In addition to the main purpose of heating food, microwave ovens are used for cooking, defrosting food and other things thanks to additional functions. Among them are:
- automatic defrosting/heating of food. In this case, the oven itself chooses how long to turn on depending on the product and its quantity;
- quick defrosting or heating;
- function of maintaining heat in the chamber. You can prepare various dairy products with it;
- smart microwave. It remembers how to prepare a dish and subsequently you just need to select this new mode;
- delayed start. With it, it’s easy, for example, when leaving on business, to set the time and put food in the camera. When you arrive home, a warmed lunch/dinner will be waiting for you.
Choosing a Microwave Oven: Covering the Device
An important factor influencing the quality of work and the service life of the device are the type of control and the coating of the object.
The choice of a microwave oven must be made consciously and carefully. In order to make the right choice, you need to understand the principle of its operation of all elements, and know the weak points that need to be paid special attention to.
Depending on the type of control, a microwave oven can be mechanical or electronic. The mechanical type of control functions by rotating the handles, one of which is responsible for operating time, the other for the power of the device. Microwave ovens with electronic control of operation by pressing buttons, or with touch control.
The microwave oven cover can be made of various materials.
The covering of the device can be as follows:
- Heat-resistant enamel . It is resistant to temperature changes, easy to care for, but is easily scratched and has a short service life.
- Stainless steel. The durable material, however, requires constant and labor-intensive care.
- Bioceramic surface. New development of scientists. It has almost the same advantages, but it greatly affects the cost of the product.
Progress does not stand still, and the microwave we choose today will be different from the one we choose tomorrow.
Comparison with multicookers
For many years in a row, the most convenient assistant in the kitchen appliance category has been the multicooker. The capabilities of this device are partly similar to the tasks of a microwave, so housewives often wonder what is better.
- The multicooker cooks porridge perfectly. However, it rarely allows you to indicate the weight of the product, so the cereal can easily become overcooked. In modern microwave ovens this problem does not arise, since at the programming stage they allow you to determine how many portions will be prepared.
- Despite the fact that a multicooker is initially better at steaming, steam humidification in microwave ovens can also be adapted for these purposes. And if your microwave model comes with tall glass or ceramic dishes, you can stew and cook with it without fear.
- A multicooker sometimes does not allow you to properly heat food, because the temperature of the programs is not indicated and the power cannot be adjusted in all models. The only drawback of microwaves in this regard is their large dimensions, which will not allow you to take the device on a trip to heat up food. But the multicooker is more compact.
- Each multicooker is also aimed at baking. Pies, breads and muffins cook very quickly, but they usually have a golden brown crust on the bottom. But the microwave wins in this case, because it has a heating element on top and low humidity. In addition, in old recipe books, a microwave oven is more often mentioned than a multicooker.
- Very often, a multicooker may not have a frying mode. In this case, other programs are used, but the taste of the products may change. The advantage of microwave ovens in this case is associated with the presence of a grill, which allows the frying process to be carried out with a minimum amount of fat.
Based on the data under consideration, we can say that the multicooker has wide functionality, but its operation is not always intuitive. At the same time, even the most modern microwave ovens retain the classic principle of operation, and if you know the principle of operation, you can cook any dish in them. Of course, a multicooker is usually equipped with a large timer, and you can always find a place for it in the kitchen. But if you are interested in cooking meat dishes and creating delicious baked goods, you should think about purchasing a microwave device.
Microwave ovens: characteristics, types, types
Volume
Power
Control
The main type of control elements in a microwave oven.
— Rotary switches. Mechanical rotary knobs are most often used in the simplest budget models: one switch sets the heating power, the other sets the operating time (it has a built-in mechanical timer). The accuracy of such adjustments is not very high; This is especially true for operating time (fixed positions may be provided for power). However, there are also quite advanced microwave ovens with similar controls - they may provide other ways to use rotary switches, as well as additional controls (for example, buttons).
— Push-button switches. Control using buttons usually requires a display - otherwise it would be difficult to control the operation. This option allows you to more accurately set the parameters - in particular, the timer in push-button models is usually electronic; In addition, it is well suited for models with built-in recipes, special modes, etc. Therefore, buttons, as a rule, are a sign of a model with advanced capabilities, the functionality of which is not limited to constant heating at a certain power.
— Clock/push-button. A type of control that combines buttons (see above) with a tact switch. Such a switch looks like a rotary wheel that does not rotate smoothly, but in “steps” (cycles - hence the name). The features of such management in general are an. are similar to a regular push-button wheel, it’s just that the clock wheel in some cases turns out to be more convenient and clearer than buttons - for example, it’s easier for them to set the time on a timer.
- Sensory. Another type of control, similar to the push-button control described above, with one difference - the role of buttons in this case is played by sensors that respond to touch, and not to pressing. Touch panels look more advanced than push-button panels, they are easier to operate, and also have no protruding parts, making them less dirty and easier to clean. The disadvantage of sensors is their higher cost, which is why this option is found mainly in expensive models.
— Rotary switches with sensors. Control that includes both rotary switches and sensors. The main features of both are described above; Here we note that such control, like “pure touch”, is found mainly in fairly advanced models. At the same time, rotary knobs, on the one hand, are more convenient for some tasks (for example, adjusting power or selecting an operating mode); on the other hand, they somewhat complicate the design of the control panel and make it difficult to clean. Therefore, this option was not particularly widespread.

Functions
— Steam cooking. Possibility of using a microwave oven as a steamer. For this purpose, the corresponding accessories are included in the package.
— Inverter. Inverter technology provides better and more uniform heating. In such furnaces, the heater constantly operates at the power specified by the user (whereas in the absence of an inverter, the heating power is regulated by periodically turning on/off the heater, and heating occurs “intermittently”). This feature will be especially useful for those who plan to use the microwave oven to prepare complex dishes.
- Grill. A device for cooking dishes in the heat - for example, frying meat. In microwave ovens, the grill usually takes the form of a separate heating element installed in the cooking chamber (usually on top). In this case, as a rule, it is possible to use the grill either separately or in combination with microwaves.
— Convection. Microwave ovens with convection are equipped with an additional heating element and a special fan, the task of which is to distribute heated air evenly, resulting in something similar to an oven. Convection microwaves cook more evenly.
- Own program. The ability to create your own operating modes and make changes to existing ones. Only advanced and therefore expensive models have this capability.
— Defrosting mode. Nali. This mode allows you to defrost food quickly, without overheating and unnecessary hassle.
— Automatic heating. A function that allows you to automate the process of heating ready-made food as much as possible: just set the type and weight of the product, and the microwave itself will select the optimal time and power for heating it.
— Autocooking. In this case, the microwave oven itself determines the best mode, the most suitable power and the optimal cooking time. The user only needs to indicate the products used and their weight.
— Auto defrost. The function is useful when defrosting food - you need to indicate which product is being defrosted and set its weight. Next, the microwave oven will automatically select the most optimal defrosting mode and its duration.
- Deodorizer. An operating mode designed to eliminate unwanted odors in the microwave working chamber, which may affect the taste of the prepared dishes. As a rule, manufacturers recommend using a deodorizer after cooking foods with a strong odor, as well as in case of heavy smoke.
— Temperature sensor. A sensor that allows you to determine the temperature of cooked food. This function makes it much easier to monitor the cooking process, however, it is not cheap.
— Delay start timer. If this function is available, you can load the ingredients for cooking (or ready-made food for heating) into the microwave in advance and set the automatic start time of the program so that it ends at the most convenient time: for example, by the time you wake up or return from work.
Opening
Microwave oven door opening direction.
- Lateral. The classic option is to open the door to the side (usually to the left, so that it is convenient to unload/load dishes with your right hand). Found in the vast majority of freestanding (non-built-in) microwave ovens. As a rule, microwave ovens with side-opening doors have a volume no higher than average, up to 25 liters. The fact is that horizontal doors tend to sag, and doors in long and wide microwave ovens will sag especially strongly.
- Folding. Opening the door forward is similar to a conventional oven. Used primarily in built-in appliances, as well as some high-end free-standing appliances. Folding doors are typical for large and capacious microwave ovens, with a working chamber volume of 23-25 liters and above. The flap hinges are not subject to sagging, as happens in large microwave ovens with side-opening doors. In advanced models, the hinged door is often equipped with a mechanical, gas or hydraulic spring, which allows the door to be held in place.
Opening the door
- Pen. The door of the built-in microwave oven opens and closes using a handle, while fixation in the closed position is ensured by a spring latch. To open such a door, you just need to pull it by the handle, overcoming the resistance of the spring latch. Mostly large microwave ovens, as well as models with a hinged door, are equipped with a handle on the door.
- Button. The door opening mechanism automatically pushes the door out at the press of a button. To close the door back, the user needs to press the edge of the door against the lock. As a rule, the opening button is used in built-in microwave ovens with a capacity no higher than average. The push-button opening mechanism is only relevant for models with a side door opening. The button allows you to get rid of the handle, which in some cases can spoil the overall interior of the kitchen, but the weak point of such a mechanism is the lock itself, which is subject to mechanical wear.
Inner coating
- Enamel. The most inexpensive and common type of internal coating. At the same time, although the strength and reliability of enamel is generally sufficient for most cases, this material does not withstand high temperatures, is relatively easily damaged and is prone to the sticking of small pieces of food and splashes, which makes cleaning difficult. As a result, enamel is used mainly in inexpensive microwave ovens.
- Acrylic. Another fairly inexpensive material; It is not as widespread as enamel, but mainly due to the fact that it appeared relatively recently. Actually, the main and, in fact, the only advantage of such coverage is its low cost. At the same time, it is not durable and does not tolerate strong heat, which is why it is used mainly in low-power models with a basic set of capabilities.
- Stainless steel. In addition to its solid appearance, the steel coating is also characterized by good strength and the ability to withstand high temperatures, and is easy to clean. This is one of the best options if you plan to use the built-in grill intensively. In general, models with such a coating are noticeably more expensive than “enamel” ones, but this is due not so much to the coating as to more advanced capabilities.
- Ceramics. Due to its hardness, ceramics perfectly resist scratches, and food particles practically do not stick to it. This makes such coatings very lightweight. istke. Their main disadvantage is fragility.
- Non-stick. This term may refer to different types of special coatings that prevent food from sticking. The most well-known option is Teflon. This material has excellent non-stick properties, it is easy to clean, but requires careful handling, because... scratches easily. It is believed that scratches lead to the release of harmful substances, although there is no clear evidence of this. But with strong heating, Teflon actually decomposes with the formation of harmful substances. However, it is almost impossible to achieve such heating of the coating in a microwave oven; and where there is such a possibility (for example, in models with a powerful grill), other non-stick materials that are more heat-resistant are usually used.
Exploitation
Preparation for use
It is recommended to install the stove as a free-standing stove on a flat horizontal surface at a height of at least 85 cm from the floor, ensuring a gap of at least 20 cm at the top and 10 cm at the back. Obviously, a stationary place must be allocated for the unit being tested: moving the stove from place to place is a rather labor-intensive task. Before first use, it is recommended to wipe the oven with a damp cloth and remove the internal components and door seal.
It is also strongly recommended that you read the instructions: it contains answers to many non-obvious questions that you will inevitably encounter during the operation of the stove.
The manufacturer also recommends setting the clock before use. This will not affect the quality of food preparation, and the clock will be reset to zero every time the power is disconnected. Unfortunately, this oven does not have non-volatile memory, so in the event of a power outage, the clock will have to be set again, and it will not be possible to continue executing a previously launched program.
Microwave care
All accessories - racks, baking tray, and glass disc - are easy to clean in the dishwasher. The body and glass door are wiped with a damp cloth with detergent; the manufacturer strictly does not recommend using abrasives and solvents.
If there is heavy contamination, it is recommended to boil a glass of water inside the device. There is also a special “Odor Elimination” program designed to remove smoke and steam from the microwave oven after cooking is complete.
Installation of built-in microwave ovens, dimensions for built-in
When determining where to place the microwave, it is worth considering some points:
- You cannot install a microwave oven above a hob, near heating appliances, an oven, that is, near heat sources, since hot air can have a destructive effect on insulation;
- Do not hang the microwave above the sink or in other places with high humidity levels.
The dimensions of the cabinet for the oven and microwave are always indicated in the instructions for the specific model, since they depend on the location of the ventilation of the working chamber, and it can be either top or side.
Installation of microwave ovens is carried out in several stages:
- Fixing in the niche of the top bracket.
- Mounting and fixing the lower brackets under the stove base.
- Introduction of the microwave.
- Installation of decorative elements, connection of the unit.
For proper installation of a built-in microwave, it is necessary to leave small gaps for air circulation
A freestanding microwave oven can be installed in a cabinet. Unlike a built-in microwave, the size of the space from the walls of the furniture should be greater: the depth of the cabinet is at least 10 cm greater than the depth of the oven, a 15-centimeter space must be left above the top surface, and side clearances must be at least 5 cm.
Helpful advice! To install a free-standing microwave oven in a niche, you don’t have to create a special furniture structure, but use an existing wide shelf of sufficient size, since the back wall is preserved when placing this type of oven.
How to choose the best microwave?
It doesn’t matter whether the microwave is free-standing or built-in – good equipment should be distinguished by functionality, quality and good workmanship. Of course, power and an intuitive control panel are important. These parameters affect the purchase prices of microwave ovens, but in everyday use they can be an excellent investment. Durability, reliability and speed of cooking will save time and money, for example through lower energy bills.
Each user will have their own priority. If proper maintenance and cleanliness are important to you, be sure to take a look inside and check the shape of the oven's interior. Extra nooks and crannies or poor quality material will become a nightmare for you. If you're looking for convenience and reliability, a traditional model with plenty of power and an intuitive control panel is sure to suit your needs. Technology enthusiasts will love electronically controlled microwave ovens with sleek designs and a host of amazing features.
Choosing the right model depends on your individual needs and the specific location where you want to install the device. Well-chosen equipment tailored to your needs will serve you for many years. Before buying a microwave, there are a few key points to consider that will help you avoid unnecessary hassle in the future.
Which microwave oven is better, built-in or free-standing?
Even at the kitchen design stage, it is worth thinking about a built-in microwave oven, especially if most of the household appliances are hidden in non-standard furniture. This solution guarantees an exceptionally aesthetic effect, but the assembly and installation of this type of device requires a little practice or the participation of a specialist. Moreover, unusual dimensions of the stove or furniture can become a problem that will not be easy to solve. So this is an option for the decisive, ideal for a major overhaul. A uniform and elegant look to the kitchen will definitely be an advantage.
There are many models on the market, the parameters of which and the price range allow you to choose the appropriate device to suit your individual needs. The Amica Microwave Oven offers modern design at a fraction of the price, the Bosch Microwave Oven is available in a wide range of designs and additional features. Manufacturers also take care of the possibility of selecting equipment in a sequential series - for example, for combining with a similar furnace. This feature not only contributes to the attractive appearance, but also makes it easier to customize the furniture to match the built-in furniture.
A freestanding microwave works well both in a ready-made kitchen and in small spaces where extra space is difficult to find. Such a device can easily be placed on the kitchen countertop or even on the refrigerator body. In addition, they are easy to move and assembly does not require special skills. This is an excellent solution if you want to equip a kitchen in a rented apartment or enrich your workplace with the ability to quickly heat ready-made food.
Freestanding microwaves are definitely cheaper than built-in microwaves, and most models look equally sleek—the right cabinet makes all the difference. Metal always gives a modern look, but a plastic case can also make an impression if it's made from a durable, modern material.
How to choose dishes for the microwave: acceptable shape and material
The main requirement for dishes for a microwave oven is the following: the material from which it is made must transmit electromagnetic waves. These include:
- Glass. Most often, a tray made of this material is included with the stove. The glass must be heat-resistant, since it will be heated to high temperatures.
- Ceramics. When heated, such dishes practically do not heat up, but during cooking they become quite hot, especially if they have thin walls. It is better to use porcelain or earthenware dishes specially designed for use in microwave ovens.
- Plastic. The dishes must be made of heat-resistant material. Only types marked “microwave” or an icon in the form of three waves are allowed for use.
- Cardboard. Individual semi-finished products are packaged in packaging that can be used as utensils when heated.

Types of models and their main functions. What to look for when choosing which manufacturer to give preference to.
The size of the dishes depends on the dimensions of the microwave; the diameter can vary from 24.5 cm to 36 cm. The optimal shape is round or oval. Square and rectangular types are less suitable for microwave ovens, since a significant amount of energy is concentrated in the corners, which causes overdrying of food.
Important! Metal utensils should not be used in microwaves. The material blocks electromagnetic waves, the container heats up, and the food remains cold.
The optimal shape of dishes for use in the microwave is round or oval
Testing
Objective tests
In the heating rate test, 500 ml of water with a temperature of 20 °C is poured into a standard GOST half-liter jar, after which it is heated for a certain amount of time in microwave mode at maximum power and then, after stirring, the water temperature is measured again. You can see the test results in the table.
Time | Temperature |
30 sec | 30°C |
1 min | 37°C |
2 minutes | 54°C |
3 min | 70°C |
4 min | 79°C |
5 minutes | 92°C |
We also measured the energy consumption of the microwave oven in various operating modes. Here we (with the exception of sleep mode) present average values rounded to the nearest ten, which fully corresponds to both the accuracy of the equipment used and the meaning of the requirements that can be placed on such tests.
Mode | Energy consumption |
State of rest | from 0.4 to 0.6 W |
Microwaves (maximum) | 1420 W |
Microwaves (minimum) | alternating states: 40 W and 1420 W |
Grill (maximum) | 1350 W |
Convection (maximum) | alternating states: 40 W and 1790-1840 W |
Combi (convection+microwave) | alternating states: 40, 1500 and 2000 W |
Combi (grill+microwave) | alternating states: 1300 W and 2000 W |
Test dishes
We decided to prepare the following as test dishes:
- Defrosting a test sample of minced meat.
- Baked potatoes in grill+microwave mode.
- Grilled tomatoes in grill+microwave mode.
- Chicken in Chinese.
- Omelette.
- Lemon balls.
- Rice.
- Poached egg.
When choosing modes, we followed the general recommendations for various products, taken from the instructions, and also simply proceeded from common sense.
Defrosting minced meat
The test sample was Nikolai minced meat, already familiar to iXBT readers from previous testing, weighing 800 grams, consisting of lean beef in half with medium-fat pork. The minced meat was frozen in the form of a round lump.
On the device, the “Quick Defrost” mode was selected, the “Meat” program was selected and the weight was set to 800 grams. The built-in program decided that a little more than 12 minutes would be enough for our piece of minced meat. After some time (after about 4 minutes), the Samsung oven (MC28H5013) beeped, after which the minced meat needed to be turned over. At this point, visually the minced meat almost did not begin to defrost. After 12 minutes, we took out our test minced meat and checked how much it had defrosted.
The result did not please us: only the upper part (1.5-2 centimeters deep) was defrosted, while the central part remained frozen. It should be noted here that the developer “insured” himself for such a case and added that after completing the “Quick Defrost” program, the product should be left for 20-90 minutes. We appreciated this “knight’s move”, but as a result we were left with a slight feeling of bewilderment: what kind of “quick defrosting” is this if it can take almost two hours?
What options and programs are there for microwave ovens?
Defrosting.
Here you can independently set the defrosting power (fast or slow).
Some microwave ovens have an auto mode
in which the defrosting temperature is automatically determined depending on the volume of the dish.
Preparation.
For many, an indispensable function that helps prepare all kinds of dishes.
You need to prepare the necessary washed and chopped ingredients in a bowl,
select the name of the dish by pressing a special key, and after a while enjoy the prepared food.
Grill.
An indispensable option for many, with which you can
cook meat, turkey, chicken, as well as mushrooms, vegetables and potatoes.
The food turns out baked, juicy, and most importantly, has a crispy crust. It is noteworthy that grilled food retains many vitamins compared to, for example, fried foods.

Portable Microwave Sizes
The smallest microwave ovens with limited functionality are popular. They are inexpensive, and their capabilities are sufficient for those for whom a microwave is a way to heat up lunch or cook something small. Such devices are used in dormitories, in apartments with kitchens of 4-6 meters. They are less powerful, but also consume little electricity. There are even models that run on batteries and rechargeable batteries.
The internal volume of such devices is small, only 8.5-17 liters. This category of microwave ovens is positioned as a technique for defrosting and heating, but devices with grills are already appearing. The range of dimensions of this class of microwave ovens is wide, from microscopic to small sizes:
- length – 15.7-52 cm;
- width – 15-46 cm;
- height – 18.8-32 cm.
The record-breaking small microwave model was invented not by tech giants, but by ketchup manufacturer Heinz. The Beanzawave microwave oven was created by order of this company. The chamber volume of this baby is 8.5 liters, weight is 5 kg. The minimum dimensions in the list above belong to this particular model. This device can only heat one small portion of food, but it is powered by a USB cable. This means that the stove can work anywhere: the power source can be a computer, laptop or even a power bank.
Popular models of portable and mini microwaves

A microwave oven is a convenient and indispensable device today that makes human life easier. If you know the basic parameters of different devices, you can choose the most suitable model for your home at a low cost.
Why is small better?
Buying a small microwave oven is beneficial not only because the “tiny” one takes up little space and copes with tasks no worse than its larger “sisters”. The big advantage of the “babies” is their light weight, which allows you to take such devices with you on the road or on a hike. A small microwave oven is undoubtedly very convenient, but its power, due to its small size, cannot be high enough. For such microwaves it does not exceed 700-900 W. But this is not a disadvantage at all. Such devices are the least harmful to human health, since they emit much less microwaves than large-sized equipment.
An important advantage of such mini-stoves is that they consume a minimum of electricity. Therefore, for those who plan to use the device only for heating food, this option is the best.
Why do you need a rotary table?
The turntable is used in microwave ovens that have the magnetron located on the side.
It heats food on one side only. To ensure that food was heated evenly, they came up with the idea of placing it on a round rotating tray in the center of the oven. When choosing such a microwave, consider the diameter of the turntable. The largest plate in which you heat food should fit comfortably on it. There are microwave ovens where the magnetron is located at the bottom or at the top. A wave distributor is hidden in the housing, which ensures uniform heating, so there is no need for a turntable. Such microwaves consume less energy and are easier to clean.
