What is an LED TV: understanding the technology

LED screens are the most common type of TV today. Buyers willingly choose devices built using LED technology. Liquid crystals are placed in the matrices of smartphones, laptops and full-size monitors, as well as tablets and TVs.

Today everyone uses LED LCD screens, but not everyone can answer what an LED TV is. However, there is nothing complicated about such a question. This article will tell you exactly what the features and advantages of LED TVs are.

What is LED TV

What is a modern LED TV? This is a standard TV with an LCD screen, the matrix of which is illuminated by special LEDs. It would be worth calling LCD (LCD) TVs with LED backlighting. But the management of the South Korean brand Samsung calls such TVs “LED TV” for marketing purposes. This name has taken root in society. Let us remember that this company was the first to present televisions of this type.

In reality, LCD devices cannot be called real LED models. LEDs do not act as a real image unit - a pixel. LED-backlit TVs are a more modernized and improved version of LCD. Previously, CCFL cold cathode fluorescent lamps were used as a light source.

How does an LCD screen differ from an LED display?

So, we found out that making a direct comparison of LED and LCD technologies is simply incorrect and makes no sense. It is more correct to talk about LCD displays with fluorescent or light-emitting diode (LED) backlighting. The presence of an LCD matrix is unchanged in both cases, since it acts as the basis of the entire structure.

The use of LEDs helps designers achieve thinner frames and also reduces energy costs. With LED backlighting, local dimming can be created, which in turn makes it possible to obtain deeper blacks. However, local dimming is not available on all TV models. Before purchasing, be sure to check whether the type of backlight and its capabilities meet your requirements.

Types of LED TVs

To understand the characteristic features of LED TV, it is necessary to dwell in detail on the types of backlighting. Today there are two classifications.

By color of light sources:

  • White LED (single-color system). Or white LEDs.

It is a cheap option, but more preferable compared to fluorescent lamps. Devices of this type consume a minimum of electricity. LEDs do not contain mercury. If we consider color transmission and coverage depth, LED TVs with this backlight are practically no different from LED LCDs.

  • RGB (multi-color system).

In this case, the color palette is much wider. This increases the quality of color reproduction. It should be noted that the price of an LED TV with this backlight technology is much higher. These devices need a powerful GPU. Among the disadvantages is the consumption of electricity in large quantities. If you have extra money, you can consider this type of TV device. All that remains is to choose the right TV.

  • QD Vision (mixed version).

The basis is blue LEDs with a special film with quantum dots (green and red).

This technology produces clear, confined and tuned optical waves. The color palette becomes wider, the colors become more intense. And this technology, unlike RGB, is considered energy efficient. Bravia TV panels are the first clear example of the use of a mixed lighting method by the Triluminos Sony manufacturer. As for the backlight placement technology, there are two options.

Along the edge of the LCD matrix (Edge LED). This is a one-color system, located on one side in most cases from the bottom. The manufacturer can also place it on parallel sides or along the entire perimeter.

The side lighting is affected by the size of the diagonal. Among the disadvantages of this method are the corners of the screen and the low level of contrast. At the same time, using such a scheme, the manufacturer creates panels a couple of millimeters thick.

  • Direct LED.

Principle: uniform distribution of diodes over the entire area. The price of such models is significantly higher. The advantage is that in this case it is possible to use local black dimming technology. The manufacturer can use white and colored LEDs. This will improve the picture quality.

Pros and cons of LED TVs

First, let's look at the advantages of LED TVs.

  1. Small body thickness. By using LEDs it is possible to create ultra-thin TVs.
  2. The image is contrasty and clear. Due to the reduced pixel response time, it was possible to achieve the most realistic image possible, even if there is dynamic movement on the screen. The viewing angle competes with plasma TV.
  3. Energy efficiency. Almost a key advantage for buyers. The device consumes 40% less electricity than its predecessors.
  4. Extensive model range , both in functional features and design.
  5. Lifetime . Due to the use of reliable and fade-resistant LEDs, the LED screen has a long service life.
  6. Environmentally friendly product . No mercury. Moreover, LED TV safety documentation complies with all strict global principles.

Now for the cons:

  1. Since local dimming technology is used to improve picture quality (LEDs are controlled by groups consisting of several diodes), TV models have the following disadvantages: the presence of dark and bright spots in places where the backlight is activated and deactivated, and colored halos are present at contrast transitions. In dark areas, picture details may disappear. Viewing angles may also be limited.
  2. Increased demands on signal qualityx. A low-resolution transmission on a TV will not look the best, showing all the disadvantages of the device.
  3. An LED screen is considered an expensive pleasure. In most cases, these TV models are 40% more expensive than conventional LCDs.

Now you know the advantages and disadvantages of LED devices.

LED TV backlight

Let's take a quick look at the pros and cons of Direct LED or Edge LED.

Positive aspects of Edge LED:

  • ultra-thin panel;
  • excellent contrast level;
  • high brightness.

Flaws:

  • there are problems with the uniform distribution of backlight in certain models;
  • There may be highlights around the edges.

Pros of Direct LED:

  • high contrast and brightness;
  • uniform illumination;
  • no glare around the edges.

Flaws:

  • panel thickness;
  • high energy consumption.

How to choose an LED TV

Today's market offers a wide range of LED models. It is quite difficult for an inexperienced consumer in these matters to make the right choice. The main thing is to take into account the critical characteristics of the technology, as well as weigh the features of the technologies and the need for their presence.

Backlight

There are several lighting options on sale. Modern models are built using DirectLED or EdgeLED technology, discussed above. Both have their advantages and disadvantages.

Pros of Direct LED:

  • good margin in brightness and contrast;
  • uniform distribution of diodes;
  • There are no specific highlights around the edges.

Minuses:

  • decent thickness;
  • increased energy consumption.

Advantages of Edge LED:

  • flexible color settings;
  • thin body, up to ultra;
  • low energy consumption.

Flaws:

  • highlights around the edges, which is especially noticeable in dark scenes;
  • the cost of the models is slightly higher than DirectLED.

Important! The technology on which the backlight is built does not play a decisive role. First of all, it is necessary to weigh the quality of its execution.

Screen resolution

Today's TV has almost completely switched to digital broadcasting, so it makes no sense to buy equipment with HD scanning. The optimal option is Full HD resolution (1920 by 1080 pixels).

The key role when choosing a resolution is played by the screen diagonal: the larger it is, the clearer the picture should be. For example, for models from 50 inches and above, it would be more advisable to choose the version in 4K format (4096 by 2160 pixels), otherwise an unpleasant “soap” will be visible.

Dimensions

If the equipment stands on a regular cabinet, then its thickness and weight do not matter. The main thing is that the stand is of the appropriate size and that the model stands confidently on its legs. If you plan to mount the TV on a vertical surface or hang it from the ceiling, then it is better to look towards thin and light models.

Screen refresh rate

This parameter is usually denoted in hertz – Hz. Video broadcast on digital TV comes with a scan rate of 50 Hz, which is quite enough for normal visualization of dynamic scenes. But with the advent of more advanced content, the “normal” screen refresh rate became insufficient.

TV equipment manufacturers, namely Sony and Samsung, found a solution by adding intermediate frames, thereby increasing the scan level to 100 Hz. Some models can even refresh the screen at a frequency of 200 Hz.

To implement this technology, innovative Scanning Backlight was introduced into the equipment. Models with this filling quietly reproduce 3D content without any jerks or lags. To check the scan of the TV, just turn on the dynamic scene: the picture should be smooth, and the contours of each detail should be smooth and clear.

Screen coating

Here we have a glossy or matte finish. The second option eliminates glare, but image clarity suffers slightly. While the glossy solution is characterized by good contrast, brightness and saturation of the picture as a whole. But the fly in the ointment is glare, which makes it difficult to watch TV during daylight hours.

Interfaces

Modern realities mean an abundance of all kinds of gadgets. Moreover, as a rule, there are quite a few of the latter: speaker systems, multimedia centers, mobile devices, computers, etc. It’s good if the TV has appropriate interfaces for working with them. In a good half of cases, a set of HDMI and USB ports, as well as audio outputs, is enough.

SmartTV

The feasibility of having “smart” functionality on board the TV is completely justified. Technology is turning into something like a personal computer. With SmartTV, you can view not only photo and video content, but also surf the Web, play games and use other features that are not available for an ordinary device.

The local operating system is responsible for implementing such functionality.
The platform can run on Android OS, WebOS (LG), Tizen (Samsung). Each offers both a standard set of capabilities and some specific functionality. L

Frame frequency

The frame rate of the TV signal in European countries is 50 Hz. This indicator is not enough to convey a dynamic scene. The picture will be choppy and blurry.

TV device manufacturers have added intermediate frames to solve this problem. As a result, a frequency of 100 Hz was obtained with the addition of 1 card between the previous and the next, 3 frames - 200 Hz. The task of the TV is to complete the intermediate frames. This technology was first used by the Samsung and Sony brands.

To increase the frame rate, scanning backlight was added. Modern models combine two technologies for maximum frame rates. If you intend to purchase a TV with 3D, then you need to opt for a high-frequency model.

To avoid making a mistake in your purchase, you need to ask the store consultant to turn on a dynamic scene. Look carefully at the image, the movements should be smooth and the contours clear.

Screen coating

Which screen coating should you choose – matte or glossy? The second option is characterized by a contrasting and bright image. Among the disadvantages are the glare that appears from the sun's rays. This is explained by the fact that the surface is slightly mirrored, so your eyes may get a little tired. The matte finish does not have such clarity, but there is no glare.

Consider the viewing angle. The larger it is, the less the picture is distorted when viewed from the side. Choose a TV with a viewing angle of at least 170 degrees.

LED TVs

There is a huge range of panels from different manufacturers on sale. You can easily choose a small budget device or a huge one with many additional functions and capabilities. Some panels can be used not only for watching movies, but also for playing games on the console. Find out which models from well-known manufacturers are the most popular.

Mystery

Among the wide range of this manufacturer there are a lot of inexpensive and high-quality models. Pay attention to this option:

  • model name: Mystery MTV-4030LT2;

  • characteristics: diagonal 40 inches (101.6 cm), Direct LED backlight, 16:9 format, Full HD, resolution 1920x1080 pixels, progressive scan, refresh rate 60 Hz, timers, clock, input of channel names, program list, protection against children, freeze frame, Russian menu, blue screen, shutdown when there is no signal, teletext, program guide, built-in radio, digital noise reduction, 2 tuners, 2 built-in speakers, power 20 W, 3 HDMI connectors, 1 USB port;
  • pros: affordable price, convenient menu;
  • cons: not very saturated colors, insensitive remote control, no Wi-Fi, poor sound.

Connectors

When choosing an LED TV, you should take into account the number of connectors on the rear panel. Today there is a lot of additional equipment that effectively interacts with the TV: DVD players, speaker systems, media players, receivers. To connect these devices, you will need the appropriate connectors. It is important that there are several HDMI interfaces, audio and video outputs, and USB connectors.

3D

Do you need 3D images? If you consider yourself to be a lover of modern technology, then a TV with a surround image will interest you. All 3D devices use 1 of 2 existing 3D imaging techniques: active or passive. Active technology uses glasses with an active shutter, which closes the eyes one at a time.

Glasses with liquid crystal lenses also interact with the TV device, using Bluetooth or an infrared port. This option is considered expensive, but at the same time it has its drawbacks. There is slight flicker. Add to this the additional cost of purchasing batteries.

The passive option divides the picture into two different polarizations. Due to different lenses, one eye will see the image from one polarization, the other from another. There is no need to purchase batteries. The main disadvantage is the halved image resolution. To choose a TV with 3D wisely, you need to look at two technologies in the store at once. Tilt your head, change your focus, move away from the TV. This is the only way to choose the best option for yourself.

LED backlight

Nowadays different types of such devices are produced. They differ in the type of LEDs used and the order of their location in relation to the screen. By lamp color:

  1. Single-color (White LED). A budget option. It does not have the disadvantages of fluorescent backlighting and creates an image with a similar color gamut, but not as contrasty.
  2. Multi-colored (basic RGB LED color triad). The color palette is expanded due to the LED brightness control. The number of semitones has been increased. To support this technology you need a powerful GPU. The model will cost more and consume more energy.
  3. Mixed. Blue LED backlights and a special film with green and red quantum dots. This technology reduces the device's power consumption.

We found out what LED backlighting is on a TV. In addition to the color of the lamps, it differs in their location. There are two options:

  1. Directly behind the LCD matrix. Direct backlight type Full or Direct LED. These models are cheaper than Edge, but not as thin. With a high level of contrast. They have white and multi-colored LEDs.
  2. Along the perimeter of the LCD matrix. Edge LED backlight type. LEDs can be located on one (bottom), two (side) or four sides of the screen. Thanks to this, manufacturers produce models less than 1 cm thick in these white LED devices. Budget models made using this technology have a drawback. They show highlights along the edges of the screen. In addition, they have a low contrast level.

Characteristics

There is a huge variety of models from different manufacturers on the market. They differ in price depending on the parameters they have. To make it easier to choose a model based on your budget when purchasing, learn to understand at least the key characteristics that an LED TV has:

  1. Permission. There are several options: Full HD, HD Ready, Ultra HD. The latter is considered the best.
  2. Smart function. Thanks to this option, you can access the Internet directly from the device. There are models with and without a built-in router.
  3. Sweep frequency. Shows how many times the image is updated per unit of time.
  4. 3D image function. If you plan to watch films in this format, then choose from two display technology options: active and passive. Compare both options in the store and determine which is more comfortable for your eyes.
  5. Matte or glossy screen. The first one does not have such a large viewing angle, but the second one has glare.

Advantages

An LED TV is nothing more than an LCD screen, but improved. LCDs used to use CCFL cold cathode fluorescent lamps as the light source. They were replaced with LED lighting. This freed liquid crystal devices from their characteristic disadvantages. Thanks to LED technology, TVs have become thinner (especially Edge models). They are environmentally cleaner and more energy efficient, do not contain mercury, and do not require specialized disposal. Advantages:

  • more contrast image compared to other technologies;
  • maximum screen viewing angles;
  • rich and natural colors;
  • consumption of a relatively small amount of energy;
  • display high definition signals;
  • thin body.

Smart TV

Is it worth paying extra for Smart TV features? A very interesting question. On the one hand, this is a really convenient option for viewing photos, videos and movies. You can access the Internet using Wi-Fi or use the LAN connector. Depending on the manufacturer, there are special widgets and browsers. This makes using the TV much easier. Smart TV reads data from an external USB drive. The device may not support all formats, much depends on the company.

Now you know what an LED TV is. What are the advantages and disadvantages of this type of TV. Moreover, you know what points to consider when choosing it.

How to choose an LED panel

The unit of measurement for display refresh rate is Hertz.
To figure out which LED TV model is best to buy, you need to look at the technical specifications:

  • permission. Mid-range devices have Full HD resolution (1920 x 1080 pixels). For a small diagonal, up to 32 inches, you can choose HD Ready. It is worth considering here that analogue broadcasting is gradually disappearing. It is being replaced by “digital”, so experts advise looking towards higher resolution;
  • sizes. If you plan to put the TV on a cabinet, then you don’t have to look at the weight and dimensions. Thin and light models are relevant if the panel will be attached to a wall or ceiling;
  • display refresh rate. The unit of measurement for this parameter is Hertz. Video scan rate for digital broadcasting is 50 Hz, and this is a normal value for displaying dynamic scenes. But the content is developing and such frequency is becoming insufficient. Sony and Samsung companies solved the problem by adding intermediate frames, which made it possible to increase the scan rate to 100 Hz. The screen refresh rate in some models reaches up to 200 Hz;
  • display covering. The matte finish neutralizes glare, but slightly reduces image clarity. The glossy screen, in turn, is contrasty, bright and saturated, but is not resistant to glare, which reduces the comfort when watching TV on a sunny day;
  • interfaces. In the 21st century, there are so many gadgets. And many of them can be connected to a TV, which usually requires just a few HDMI and USB ports. To improve sound quality, an audio system is connected to the panel, but this requires a separate audio output;
  • Smart TV. The smart function is the ability of the panel to access the Internet. This opens up access to a large amount of media content: films, TV series, music, photographs, social networks, programs, games and much more. To connect, use a Wi-Fi module or a wired connection via a LAN connector. The operating system built into the TV is responsible for the functionality of this functionality. Each manufacturer has its own: LG – webOS, Samsung – Tizen. OS is no less popular

When choosing an LED TV, we start from the purpose of the purchase. For example, if you don’t need the Internet, then there is no point in paying for this function. And if the panel is taken into the kitchen, “just so that someone will chat,” then the frequency along with the resolution can be safely reduced, which will reduce the price.

What does LED TV mean? It is an LCD panel with LED backlighting. This technique shows a brighter, more contrasting and detailed picture compared to outdated LCDs. Knowing the basic characteristics, you can easily choose a device to suit your needs. Fortunately, many online stores make search filters for this purpose.
