Grinder, jigsaw and reciprocating saw in one: will the renovator replace the usual tool?

How to choose a good jigsaw will be discussed in the article; a rating of the best electric jigsaws of 2021 will also be given. Oleg Yakovlev, a repairman for household appliances and construction tools, helped compile the TOP of reliable models.

Initially, you need to answer the question “for what purposes do I need it?” For some, the ability to saw chipboard or laminate is enough, others are aimed at larger-scale work, for example, making furniture themselves. Again, it is important how often you plan to use the tool - from time to time or daily with serious loads. And starting from the goal, you can choose a suitable jigsaw without spending a significant amount on it. A jigsaw is a tool that will not be out of place in the arsenal of a “home craftsman”. When choosing it, you need to take into account not only the company and price, but also other parameters on which performance, functionality, and ease of use will depend.

Answers to important questions

A jigsaw for the home is a practical tool that simplifies and speeds up household sawing and cutting tasks. When you go to a store, you can come across many models, and each one will have some unusual functions. Some are useful, others are dubious, which only increase the cost of the instrument. What to consider when purchasing:

  • Do you need a laser marker on a jigsaw? The marker projects a point or line in front of the file, which makes it easier to “aim” when guided by it. In fact, the option is not so necessary; in addition, it is not needed at all if you plan to cut out shaped parts (it will simply be distracting). And during operation, the file of the tool can still move to the side, which depends on the material being processed, the length of the file, and the shape of the teeth. And sometimes you follow the laser, but in reality the cut has already gone wrong. Instead of laser marking, it is better to choose another option - backlight;
  • Do you need a soft start for a home jigsaw? This option is found in most electric tools, and yes, it is useful. There are often situations when a jigsaw is started when the file comes into contact with the material, for example, there is already a cut and it is necessary to continue it. To prevent the wood from chipping and a soft start was invented;
  • Is the ability to connect a vacuum cleaner important? This option is found on most jigsaws for the home. In principle, the tool does not produce much sawdust, but in any case the workshop will be cleaner if you connect a vacuum cleaner;
  • Is the quick-release fastening convenient? On inexpensive models, the file is secured in the clamping chuck using a hexagon and sometimes it gets lost. Over time, they began to make a quick-release fastener - it’s more convenient, and the file can be changed once or twice;
  • what maximum speed should I choose? In many jigsaws, the maximum frequency is around 3000 strokes per minute. The minimum frequency is of greater importance, especially if you plan to work with metal. And in such a situation, it is recommended to take a more powerful electric jigsaw so that its engine does not “jam” when cutting a metal sheet.

Description of the renovator

A similar device was invented about 40 years ago, but was not widely used. It began to be produced again several years ago, because the patent for its production expired. This is an instrument based on the principle of oscillation. They are transmitted directly from the engine through an eccentric. The resulting rocking movements of the nozzle with a frequency of up to 30,000 swings per minute. The amplitude depends on the size of the eccentric, but the difference is small. It is the high, adjustable frequency of movement of the head that makes the renovator a useful tool on the farm. The renovator is also called a universal cutter.

They are sold in online and offline versions, with a battery. The plug-in one is much cheaper. Battery models give greater freedom of action - up to several hours of continuous operation, but they are also more expensive. If you can work near an electrical outlet, you should take a renovator with an electrical cord and a full set of attachments “for all occasions.”

Network models differ from each other in power, minimum and maximum oscillation frequency, swing angle, and vacuum cleaner connection nozzle. Available with or without a case.

Models from 400 W are capable of working longer and at higher frequencies, but are noticeably heavier. You need to choose what is more necessary - weight or vibration frequency. The mounting location for nozzles is the same for expensive and cheap models. Charged models are equipped with a keyless nozzle replacement function.

A set of device attachments replaces a number of tools:

  • angle grinder;
  • reciprocating saw;
  • jigsaw;
  • grinding machine.

The best manufacturers of jigsaws

In the world of power tools, the most compelling argument for buying a jigsaw, like other tools, is the name of the manufacturer. The name of the company itself speaks of the prestige, quality and reliability of the instrument.

  1. Bosch is the most famous European company producing household and professional tools. Despite the fact that the country of origin of Romania or China may be indicated on the model, Bosch quality is guaranteed.
  2. Makita – ideal Japanese precision and reliability; the tools of this company belong to the highest category of quality and functionality.
  3. Hitachi – one of the main activities of this company is construction equipment. Therefore, it is not surprising that Hitachi jigsaws are produced in compliance with all requirements of accuracy and quality.
  4. Dewalt is an American tool brand with inherent reliability and power. There are several models on the market, including cordless tools.
  5. Metabo is a brand that produces professional tools with high reliability and increased engine power. The model range includes several types of tools, from conventional network tools to multifunctional cordless models.
  6. Interskol is a domestic brand that combines the traditions of the Russian school of tool making and European engineering. The manufacturer offers several models of jigsaws in both household and professional segments, and is actively updating models by making changes and improving their functionality.

Help with the choice (angle grinder, face grinder and jigsaw)

Hello! Before creating this topic, I honestly searched the forum for almost the whole day, but I still couldn’t find any information on the issue I was interested in. Therefore, I'm creating a separate thread. Please don’t throw slippers if I’m repeating myself...

I would like to consult about the choice. Today the question of purchasing three instruments has become urgent.

The first one is Bulgarian. About a year and a half ago, I already bought myself a 150-diameter grinder (interskol). So far I haven’t had the opportunity to work with it enough to clearly understand how reliable and durable it is, but so far I like the device. Since the one I had already purchased was the first grinder I held in my hands, I only realized with time that the model I had chosen was not the most optimal for my tasks. Now I have roughly decided what characteristics I need. You need a grinder with a diameter of 115 or 125 with dust protection and a speed controller, preferably one that is lighter. Her tasks include working on a car: cutting metal (including in hard-to-reach places), as well as stripping metal with a special nozzle. Possibly polishing...

The second device you need is a jigsaw. I don't understand the parameters here at all. Tasks for him: work at home and in the country (plywood, pieces of wood, etc.).

The third tool is a surface grinder. I don't know about the parameters either. Tasks: to begin with, scrape the porch and outdoor wooden furniture at the dacha, and later, scrape pieces of wood and clean flat metal surfaces (car repair).

All tools are intended not for industrial use, but for personal use - home repairs, work in the country and in the garage. But you still want to buy a reliable tool, and not some cheap one (I won’t say what) that will break in a short time...

Of the manufacturers, of course, I look at Makita, but the main argument, in this case, is that this is the brand I know best. But the price for it, naturally, corresponds to its fame. And the issue of price plays an important role today. In this regard, since I was satisfied with the Interskol grinder, and Interskol’s prices will naturally be more pleasant, I would like to hear at least an approximate comparison of these manufacturers. Even, perhaps, not in the sense of comparing “domestic” with “Japanese” (although I have nothing against domestic brands), but in the sense that Interskol has models that meet my goals? Or maybe you can recommend something completely different for my tasks and completely different manufacturers?

I would be very grateful if you could give me a hint.

How to choose a jigsaw

The first thing we need to do is choose a jigsaw. The choice depends on our individual needs and the budget we want to spend on the purchase.

  • Before answering the question of what type of jigsaw to choose, you need to decide in advance about the type of work for which it should be used. In addition, the effective and durable operation of a particular tool often depends on many other factors.
  • For example, the power indicator largely determines the quality of its operation. This is especially true when it comes to large volumes of work. Jigsaws can be 200-1000 W. It is best to give preference to a more powerful tool, as it will be more functional.

Of course, you should pay special attention to the technical parameters. Let's look at the most important of them:

Jigsaw power

It must be precisely specified by the device manufacturer. Power affects the operating time of the machine, and often the maximum depth of cut. Remember that jigsaws with the most power can provide us with long and trouble-free work.

Less power means more frequent breaks. This is very important, because long-term use of the device can lead to overheating and, as a result, complete failure.

Maximum cutting depth

This is an important parameter that shows the maximum thickness of the material being processed. The maximum cutting depth is indicated for one selected material (wood, metal or plastic).

  • Number of movements per minute - this parameter allows you to determine the speed at which the tool will cut.
  • The more movements per minute, the better. The basic, weakest jigsaws reach about 400 movements per minute.
  • They are suitable for basic work, but do not provide much comfort in use.
  • Better and more powerful jigsaws can perform up to 3000 movements per minute.
  • These are devices designed for more demanding users who plan to use the device frequently.

Blade holder type

Another important parameter on which the accuracy of the tool and the comfort of its use directly depend. Most manufacturers offer jigsaws with three types of handles.

  • The T symbol indicates a single tab pen type. Usually mounted on high-quality and more powerful jigsaws. One tab means greater operating comfort and increased safety of use.
  • Handles marked 2T are products with two reeds. This solution has now been abandoned and 2T handles are now only found on older models.
  • The third type is universal handles, indicated by the symbol U. All types of blades can be installed on a jigsaw with a universal handle. Thanks to this feature, the functionality of the entire device is increased.
