Why does the freezer not turn off or freeze?


Refrigerators and freezers (intended exclusively for freezing and not having a moderate cooling mode) are technologically unable to operate continuously.

The compressor unit is programmed for cyclic mode: as a rule, the electric motor runs for 15–20 minutes, then there is a break of 5–10 minutes. The execution of the program is monitored by a control unit consisting of a fairly primitive programmer, an electronic timer (in advanced models), and a temperature sensor. In addition, the starting device contains a so-called thermal protection relay. It monitors the current flowing through the motor winding and breaks the power circuit if it overheats. This is an emergency shutdown unit that is not related to the operating mode. That is, if the monitoring and control unit does not give the command for a cyclic shutdown, and the motor overheats, the power still disappears. The engine cannot start until the actuator cools down: the bimetallic plate.

Thus, in the absence of obvious malfunctions, the engine will in any case periodically rest. Either at the end of the cold injection cycle, or after the protective thermostat has tripped.

Why is the freezer constantly running?

Are you sure the compressor is not stopping to rest? Normally, the refrigerator should operate for 20 minutes and rest for 5 minutes. Listen to the operation: if it really works non-stop, then start looking for the reasons.

If the Biryusa or Indesit freezer is constantly working, this does not indicate a serious malfunction. First of all you need to check:

  • Which mode is selected ? Maybe you turned on super freezing so that after washing the compressor will reach the temperature faster. In electromechanical models, the set mode must be turned off independently: just turn the regulator knob. Whereas in electronic ones it turns off automatically after two to four hours.

  • Thermal relay position . For devices with mechanical control, the normal position of the regulator is considered to be 2.5-3.5. For electronic equipment, choose a temperature of -18-19 degrees. Even when the room is hot and stuffy, there is no need to set a higher value. If you choose the right equipment according to the climate class, it will cope with the load.

Important! The climate class is indicated in Latin letters on the body or in the device instructions. Choose depending on the region and place of use.

If all readings are normal, but the freezer section does not turn off, then diagnostics of components and parts is needed. You can contact a specialist or try to fix the problem yourself.

Possible cause of failure

Many users are faced with the problem of constant operation of refrigeration equipment without stopping. How to find and eliminate the cause of this malfunction? This feature of the device may be associated with:

  • incorrect installation;
  • wear of components;
  • incorrect settings.

It is important to install the refrigerator correctly, but many people miss this point. Often there is no air gap left between the wall and the body of the equipment. Remember, installing a refrigerator next to heating appliances is strictly prohibited. The temperature in the room should not be elevated. The reason for the constant operation of the equipment can also be a hot compressor operating without stopping for a long time.


Correct equipment placement

Don't forget about the age of the device. In older appliances, the thermostat or compressor often fails. The components must be replaced.

Also, due to carelessness, you can set the maximum value on the thermostat. In this case, the compressor will automatically maintain the set mode. Familiarize yourself with the functionality of your equipment. For example, the super-freezing function set may imply uninterrupted cooling.

Remember that on average the compressor should work no more than 15-20 minutes per start. This should be followed by a rest that lasts at least 5 minutes.


How to set the temperature on the refrigerator

These are the most common reasons why a refrigerator runs for a long time. You can independently exclude one or another option. Some breakdowns can be corrected yourself at home.

If the cause of the malfunction is different, you should contact a professional.

Often, defrosting the refrigerator is enough to solve the problem. If after this procedure no changes occur, it will not be possible to do without repairs. Often in such situations it is necessary to use the services of specialists. So, why don't temporary freezer shutdowns occur?

Problems that require repair

The causes of such breakdowns must be sought using special equipment. Therefore, if you do not have such experience, it is better to contact the service. At least you will understand where to look for the problem.

The reason is a clogged capillary pipe: as a result, the refrigerant cannot move normally through the circuit. Blockages can occur due to burnt particles of compressor oil, which also move through the system.

What to do:

  • Clean the circuit and system.
  • Check engine oil. Replace if unusable.
  • Fill the system with freon gas.

In electromechanical models, the problem may lie in the temperature controller. In electronic refrigerators, the evaporator sensor (Indesit, Ariston and other brands with No Frost) could break down.

Since the thermal relay does not send a signal to the board about the temperature in the compartment, the board does not send a signal to shut down. Therefore, the motor runs without interruption.

To fix the problem, you need to replace the sensor or thermostat.

The problem may also be the constant entry of warm air into the chamber. Why does this happen:

  • The door seal is worn out. Check to see if it is dirty and does not adhere to the body. Wash it with soapy water and wipe with ammonia. If the rubber is deformed, boiled water will help return it to shape. To do this, water the seal with a thin stream. When worn out, the element needs to be completely replaced.

  • The hinges sagged and the door fastenings became loose. Tighten the fasteners or replace the doors.

If there is a freon leak, call a technician who will find the leak, fix the problem and refill the system.

Now you know where to look for a problem in case of such problems. Do not allow the equipment to operate for a long time without stopping, otherwise you will have to carry out expensive repairs.

The low-temperature compartment is a much-needed compartment in a home refrigerator that allows you to prolong the freshness of loaded food items. But, over time, it may begin to function incorrectly - freezing excessively or not cooling food sufficiently. Refrigerant leak

This breakdown is comparable to replacing a compressor - you will have to call a specialist to completely depressurize the old system and pump in a new volume of refrigerant. One can only draw conclusions that this is so if all other reasons are not clearly identified. That is, the seal is new and airtight, the thermostat works as it should, the refrigerator does not overheat due to the outside temperature in the room, etc.

The door seal is damaged

The door seal located along its perimeter often wears out, which is why the engine does not shut down. Consequently, the hermetic closure of the door is broken, and warm air penetrates into the cooled compartment. The engine constantly pumps cooled freon to remove heat and cool the incoming air. What to do in this case? A worn refrigerator seal needs to be replaced. A new seal can be purchased in specialized stores or on the market. To avoid mistakes and buy the necessary seal for the refrigerator, take a piece of the old seal with you.

The compressor motor or the compressor itself has broken down

The compressor may be running continuously as it tries to reach the set temperature level, but... It could be:

  • The rotor or stator winding is burnt;
  • Critical wear of the bearings has occurred;
  • Drying of lubricant in rubbing units;
  • Wear of bushings (sometimes installed instead of bearings);
  • Burnt contact at the terminals;
  • Wear of piston rings or crankshaft bushings;
  • Other reasons (you can’t list them all).

The best way out is to call a technician who will accurately determine the cause of the breakdown and identify the failed part in order to replace it. When replacing a compressor, you will have to re-pump freon or another refrigerant, so the repair will not be cheap.

The compressor air cooler is broken

Older devices do not have such a fan. In new electric refrigerators - not in all. But, if there is a cooler, then it is installed in the compressor compartment. Designed to blow air over the blower motor and ensure air movement within the radius of heat radiation from the condenser.

If the fan is broken, the refrigerant will not be cooled, so the compressor will rarely turn off or even run all the time. You can check if the cooler is working visually - look at it when you hear that the supercharger is working.

If the blades do not spin, the reason may be the bearing, the motor itself, or damaged electrical wiring contacts. If you can find the last reason yourself, then to eliminate the first two you will need to call a refrigeration specialist.
