In modern television receivers, both liquid crystal and plasma, special matrices are used as a screen, in which liquid crystals or inert gas are used to display the picture. They appeared thanks to innovative digital technologies that are actively being introduced into production by well-known companies that mass produce televisions, personal and tablet computers, and other gadgets. Currently, products that use various types of matrices as screens have practically replaced models with cathode ray tubes (CRT) from the market. But, like any electronics, this equipment also fails due to external factors (for example, mechanical damage) or internal failures (for example, a cable). In this case, you will need to replace the matrix on the TV. Moreover, this process does not depend on the size of the screen diagonal (32 inches, 40, 42 or another), but on the design features of the device.
Types of matrices and their design
In the general case, the matrix is a “sandwich” in which many tiny segments (pixels) are placed between two absolutely clean glasses (substrates), each of which is controlled by a separate driver - a microcircuit located on a flexible cable soldered into the substrate . That is why a certain image is formed on the screen. Structurally, the matrices of plasma panels and LCD TVs are arranged differently.
Plasma panel
The matrix of a plasma TV is a set of glass cells measuring 0.5x0.5 mm, filled with an inert gas (xenon, neon, etc.) with a small addition of mercury. The outside of the cells is coated with phosphor - a substance that can glow under the influence of ultraviolet rays. When high-frequency voltage is applied to the electrodes, the gas is ionized and converted into plasma (4th state of aggregation). In this case, a capacitive high-frequency discharge occurs in the plasma, causing ultraviolet radiation, under the influence of which the phosphor of the desired color begins to glow.
On a note! The process is controlled by the internal electronics of the matrix, and the screen is updated at a frequency of 400 to 600 Hz, which is much faster than in a CRT.
The main disadvantages of a plasma matrix are burnout and afterglow of cells.
- Burn-in is a defect that occurs when there are image fragments that do not change on the screen for a long time (TV company logo, etc.). In this case, the luminous cells overheat, the phosphor from their surface evaporates, and a fragment is fixed on the screen that does not disappear when another image is formed.
- Afterglow is a phenomenon in which some of the cells can glow both after changing the image and after turning off the TV. This happens due to the fact that an electric charge accumulates in cells that glow with bright light for a long time.
LCD matrix
The operating principle of the LCD matrix is based on the use of the anisotropy of a unique substance - cyanophenyl.

The formation of a picture on the LCD TV screen is carried out due to the polarization properties of liquid crystal (LC) molecules, which play the role of light filters that transmit only one of the primary colors. Polarization is controlled using an electromagnetic field, under the influence of which the LCs change their shape and location. At the same time, the angles of light refraction of the crystals change, as a result of which their polarization changes and an image is formed.
Structurally, the LCD matrix is an array of pixels, each of which is controlled by internal electronics. The light source can be reflected light or passing directly through the crystals. The design also includes polarizing filters (additional panels) that control the intensity of the LCD glow. In this case, the amount of transmitted light depends on the angle between the polarizer axis (main panels) and the plane of polarization (additional panels).
